An Economic Analysis of Genetic Information: Leptin Genotyping in Fed Cattle AgEcon
DeVuyst, Eric A.; Bullinger, Jared R.; Bauer, Marc L.; Berg, Paul T.; Larson, Daniel M..
A polymorphism in the leptin gene is associated with fat deposition. Since fed cattle are often priced on a grid that considers yield and quality grades, fat deposition is an important factor in profitability. Using data from 590 crossbred steers and heifers, we simulate carcass traits to various days-on-feed and compute the associated profit under three price grids. Results indicate that leptin genotype does affect value by as much as $48 per head but has little impact on days-on-feed. Given current commercial testing fees of $40-$50 per sample, genotyping of feeder cattle appears to break even at best.

AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF GENETIC INFORMATION: LEPTIN GENOTYPING IN FED CATTLE AgEcon
Bullinger, Jared R.; DeVuyst, Eric A.; Bauer, Marc L.; Berg, Paul T.; Larson, Daniel M..
The use of genetic knowledge is widespread in crop production but is just recently being utilized in livestock production. This study investigates the economic value to feedlots of a polymorphism in the bovine leptin gene. Previous studies indicate that this polymorphism is associated with fat deposition. Since fed cattle are often priced on a grid that considers both yield and quality grades, fat deposition is an important factor in the value and profitability of fed cattle. Using data from 590 crossbred steers and heifers, we estimate growth curves for relevant biological traits, both with and without genotypic information. Using the resulting functions, we then simulate carcass traits to various days-on-feed and compute the associated profit under three...

An improved whole life cycle culture protocol for the hydrozoan genetic model Clytia hemisphaerica ArchiMer
Lechable, Marion; Jan, Anne-cecile; Duchene, Axel; Uveira, Julie; Weissbourd, Brandon; Gissat, Loann; Collet, Sophie; Gilletta, Laurent; Chevalier, Sandra; Leclère, Lucas; Peron, Sophie; Barreau, Carine; Lasbleiz, Régis; Houliston, Evelyn; Momose, Tsuyoshi.
The jellyfish species Clytia hemisphaerica (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) has emerged as a new experimental model animal in the last decade. Favorable characteristics include a fully transparent body suitable for microscopy, daily gamete production and a relatively short life cycle. Furthermore, whole genome sequence assembly and efficient gene editing techniques using CRISPR/Cas9 have opened new possibilities for genetic studies. The quasi-immortal vegetatively-growing polyp colony stage provides a practical means to maintain mutant strains. In the context of developing Clytia as a genetic model, we report here an improved whole life cycle culture method including an aquarium tank system designed for culture of the tiny jellyfish form. We have compared different...

Alvarez, Antonio; Arias, Carlos; Roibas, David.
Abstract In this paper we analyze the influence of genetics on milk quality. Análisis fisiológico y genético del desempeño reproductivo del camarón blanco Litopenaeus vannamei OceanDocs
Arcos, G.F..

Nafkfa, Ch.; Ezzeddine, S.; Chemmam, B.; Jarboui, O.; Fadlaoui-Zid, K..

Analysis of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system gene polymorphisms in resistant hypertension BJMBR
Freitas,S.R.S.; Cabello,P.H.; Moura-Neto,R.S.; Dolinsky,L.C.; Lima,A.B.; Barros,M.; Bittencourt,I.; Cordovil,I.L..
Essential hypertension is a disease multifactorially triggered by genetic and environmental factors. The contribution of genetic polymorphisms of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and clinical risk factors to the development of resistant hypertension was evaluated in 90 hypertensive patients and in 115 normotensive controls living in Southwestern Brazil. Genotyping for insertion/deletion of angiotensin-converting enzyme, angiotensinogen M235T, angiotensin II type 1 receptor A1166C, aldosterone synthase C344T, and mineralocorticoid receptor A4582C polymorphisms was performed by PCR, with further restriction analysis when required. The influence of genetic polymorphisms on blood pressure variation was assessed by analysis of the odds ratio, while...

Analysis of shell colour determinism in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum ArchiMer
Peignon, Jean-marie; Gerard, Andre; Naciri, Yamama; Ledu, Christophe; Phelipot, Pascal.
The Manila clam presents a large polymorphism for shell colours and patterns. No experiment has been conducted to study the determinism of such a polymorphism which has been well known for a long time. The aim of this study was firstly to determine the genetic variation for shell colour and secondly to produce some homozygous lines for the shell colouring. These lines could then be used as controls for laboratory experiments. The colouring is defined by three characters: asymmetry, ornamentation and hue. Clams with asymmetrical colouring are not fully pigmented, except for a posterior band on the left valve. Clams with symmetrical colouring are fully pigmented on the two valves. Four cross series were conducted between the different characters: Asymmetry...

Applications and implications of phylogeography for canid conservation Mastozool. neotrop.
Martinez,Pablo A; Zurano,Juan P; Molina,Wagner F; Bidau,Claudio J.
Phylogeographic studies are currently used to infer historical demographic processes such as gene fow, determination of effective population sizes, colonisation dynamics, and population botlenecks, as well as for the determination of species boundaries and the identification of possible conservation units. We present a review of the main contributions of this approach, and its applications and implications for canid conservation. Studies performed in canids have shown that the number of named subspecies is often larger than that of phylogeographic units. In recent times, the fragmentation of habitats has increased and one of the major concerns of conservation biologists is the occurrence of inbreeding. Large-sized canids have demonstrated to have enough...

Aquaculture genetics research in Egypt OceanDocs
Elghobashy, H..
Fish production in Egypt has significantly increased over the last few years reaching 546 000 t in 1998 compared to 306 000 t in 1988. The contribution of aquaculture in the overall fish production has increased as well reaching its utmost share in 1998 (26%). Research on aquaculture topics was conducted in several institutes targeting the increase of productivity as well as working on problems facing this promising sector. However, research on fish genetics in Egypt only started in recent years. The genetic improvement of tilapias and African catfish represents the focus of most genetics research in Egypt. This paper presents the status of genetics research within the International Network on Genetics in Aquaculture and in other national institutes in...

Aquaculture Genetics Research In Malawi OceanDocs
Ambali, A..
Aquaculture genetics research is carried out at the National Aquaculture Centre at Domasi, Malawi, by staff of the University of Malawi (UM) and the Department of Fisheries. The main species cultured are from genera Tilapia and Oreochromis. The genus Oreochromis was domesticated without proper identification of the various species especially in the subgenus Nyasalapia where three species (O. karongae, O. squamipinnis, and O. lidole) are difficult to identify before they reach breeding size. It is, however, observed that local fishers can identify these species using morphological characters. There have been no attempts to carry out deliberate domestication selection in the small-scale farms with the prevailing practices probably leading to deterioration of...

Are sex ratios in wild European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) populations biased? ArchiMer
Vandeputte, Marc; Quillet, Edwige; Chatain, Beatrice.
Sex ratios in farmed European sea bass are highly biased towards males (75 to 95%), which is problematic for aquaculture. In this mini-review, we re-analyse fisheries literature data about sex ratios in wild sea bass from 13 population samples, representing altogether 4889 individuals covering the major part of the distribution range of the species. We find that as a whole, the sex ratio of wild populations is biased towards females (59.4% females, p < 0.001), but that the sex ratio of the younger fish (< 30 cm total length) is balanced (52.0% females, p = 0.15), while the sex ratio of the older fish is heavily biased towards females (69.5% females, p < 0.01). Possible causes of these differences (differential longevity, biased sampling) are...
