This paper deals with the design and application of different fishing gears tested in the Beagle Channel (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina) with the supervision of the technical personnel of INIDEP Fishing Gear Group, the support of the General Directorate of Natural Resources (known today as SRNyAH) of Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur Province and the participation of local fishermen. Activities started as a result of an agreement between the INIDEP and the SRNyAH ratified in 1994. The catch and selectivity effectiveness of two artificial attractors-AA (bright gray curly ribbon and green lightsticks) in gillnets was evaluated in order to increase the productivity and income of small scale fishermen. Five expeditions were carried on the Araguaia River, where the two AA treatments were applied to two thirds of the area of gillnets, leaving the remaining third without the use of attractors (control). For a better comparison, the catches were subdivided into ecological groups (carnivores, detritivores, herbivores and omnivores). 541 fish were caught, 197 in the curly ribbon, 177 lightstick and 167 in the control. Incidental catches (bycatch) in gillnet fisheries off Zanzibar (Unguja Island), as a source of mortality among several species of dolphins, were reported in a questionnaire survey conducted in 1999. As a follow-up to that survey, from January 2000 to August 2003, we monitored the incidental catches of dolphins collected from 12 fish landing sites. Six species of dolphins were recorded from 143 specimens retrieved from bycatches in drift- and bottom set gillnets.
