Comparative antioxidant and bioavailability studies of Vitamin C in Phyllanthus emblica Linn. and its combinations with Piper nigrum Linn. and Zingiber officinale Roscoe BJPS
Somasekhar,Vanita; Ashok,Purnima; Kameswari,Sri Adibatla Renuka; Rajendran,Ramaswamy; Singh,Rajpreet.
ABSTRACT Phyllanthus emblica Linn. (amla) is used in Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine and its major constituent is vitamin C which has effective free radical scavenging property. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant activity and the bioavailability profile of vitamin C in amla and its combinations with piperine and ginger in comparison to synthetic vitamin C using New Zealand rabbits. In vitro antioxidant activity studies of synthetic vitamin C, amla, amla with piperine and amla with ginger were carried out using different models such as 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, Nitric Oxide, Hydrogen peroxide scavenging methods, Total reductive capability and Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity estimation. The study...

COMPARISON OF GINGER (Zingiber officiale Roscoe) OLEORESIN OBTAINED WITH ETHANOL AND ISOPROPANOL WITH THAT OBTAINED WITH PRESSURIZED CO2 Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
NOBREGA,Lia P.; MONTEIRO,Alcilene R; MEIRELES,M. Angela A.; MARQUES,Marcia O. M.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) belongs to the Zingiberacea family. It is a spice of great commercial importance. In this work ginger oleoresin was obtained with ethanol, isopropanol and liquid carbon dioxide. The chemical compositions of the extract were compared with each other. All oleoresin samples had monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. Carboxylic acids were found in organic solvent extracts for an extraction time of 2 hours. The component responsible the for pungent characteristic of the oleoresin, gingerois, were detected in samples obtained with organic solvent for extraction times of 6 hours and in samples obtained with CO2 liquid for extraction times of 2 hours.

Effect of convective and microwave methods on drying characteristics, color, rehydration and microstructure properties of ginger Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
IZLI,Nazmi; POLAT,Ahmet.
Abstract In this research, the effects of convective drying method (60, 70 and 80 °C) and microwave drying method (160 and 350 W) on the drying characteristics, color, rehydration and microstructure properties of ginger has been examined. For the purpose of choosing the most appropriate thin-layer drying models in terms of the drying applications, nine mathematical models have been applied on the experimental data. Pursuant to the assessment of the statistical tests, models of Diffusion Approach, Midilli et al. and Page that represent drying characteristics are found to be better than other models. Drying applications have affected the color values of all fresh ginger samples. Results indicated that browning degree increases as drying temperature and...

Effectiveness of both synthetic compounds and biological extracts against powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici) on winter wheat Agrociencia
Věchet,Lubomír; Šerá,Božena.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of foliar application of various synthetic compounds and biological extracts against powdery mildew on wheat. Seed coats of winter wheat were treated by synthetical compounds (benzothiadiazole, salicylic acid, and glycine betaine) or by the extracts from plants (oak, giant knotweed, curcuma, and ginger). Then the seeds were planted using small-field experiments with powdery mildew infection (repetitions over a two-year period; experimental field in Ruzyne, Prague). Leaf area infection was measured and the Cumulative Proportion of Leaf Area Diseased (CPLAD) was calculated. Data were analysed using ANOVA (Tukey test, p≤0.05). Effectiveness of preparations varied 30 % to 72 % in 2008, and 25 % to...

Evaluation of Comparative Effect of Feed Additive of Allium Sativum and Zingeber Officinale on Bird Growth and Histomorphometric Characteristics of Small Intestine in Broilers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Javid,MA; Abbas,G; Waqas,MY; Basit,MA; Asif,M; Akhtar,MS; Masood,S; Saleem,MU; Qamar,SH; Kiani,FA.
ABSTRACT The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of supplementation of garlic, ginger in the diets of broiler chickens and assessment in terms of feed intake, growth performance and economics of feeding. The results showed that groups supplemented with 0.5% garlic powder and 0.5% ginger powder has shown significant effects on body weight as compared to the control group at day 28. Groups supplemented with 0.5% garlic powder and 0.5% ginger powder show significant increase in body weight than the groups supplemented with 0.25% garlic powder and 0.25% ginger powder. Between different supplemented groups, villus length and width of duodenum and jejunum of birds served with 0.5% garlic powder and 0.5% ginger powder is significantly higher than...

Rediscovery of Curcuma sumatrana (Zingiberaceae) endemic to West Sumatra Naturalis
Ardiyani, M.; Anggara, A.; Leong-Škorničková, J..
A recent exploration of Sumatra resulted in the re-collection of Curcuma sumatrana, an endemic Zingiberaceae species of unclear identity that was first described by Miquel nearly 150 years ago. The history of this species is discussed, a detailed description with a colour plate is provided and a lectotype is designated. Curcuma sumatrana currently qualifies under IUCN assessment as vulnerable, but due to the decline of its habitat, it is likely to fulfil the criteria as endangered in near future. As there is no comprehensive revision of the family Zingiberaceae for Sumatra in progress, it is meanwhile important to make accessible the characteristics of this endemic species to facilitate its proper identification and conservation management.

The effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal isolates on the development and oleoresin production of micropropagated Zingiber officinale Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Silva,Maicon F. da; Pescador,Rosete; Rebelo,Ricardo A.; Stürmer,Sidney L..
We have investigated the effects of phosphate fertilization and inoculation with isolates of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi Scutellospora heterogama SCT120E, Gigaspora decipiens SCT304A, Acaulospora koskei SCT400A, Entrophospora colombiana SCT115, and an assemblage (Mix) of all four isolates on growth, development and oleoresin production of micropropagated Zingiber officinale. After 120 and 210 d of growth, the Mix and phosphorus addition significantly increased shoot height relative to control plants. Phosphorus addition was the only treatment resulting in significantly large shoot dry biomass relative to control after 120 d. No statistical differences were observed between treatments for shoot dry biomass after 210 d and for fine and coarse root biomass...
