Comparison of three Gobiidae (Teleostei) life history strategies over their geographical range 5
Bouchereau, Jl; Guelorget, O.
This article summarizes the latest knowledge on the ecology of three gobies. The authors compile data published by various scientists who carried out their research under different conditions, using a variety of methods for collecting data and processing the results. The relationship between population structure and different environmental conditions was considered for three goby species Pomatoschistus minutus (Pallas, 1770), P. microps (Kroyer, 1838) and Gobius niger Linnaeus, 1758, in different geographical areas, notably the Mediterranean (Gulf of Lions and Adriatic) and cold temperate Atlantic (north of the English Channel) parts. In the three species, the life cycles in the Mediterranean, favoured by the local hydroclimate, are "contracted" (growth is...

Cryptobenthic fishes in the Uramba National Natural Park Bahía Málaga (Colombia), Tropical Eastern Pacific 50
Castellanos-Galindo,Gustavo Adolfo; Medina-Contreras,Diana; Lazarus,Juan Felipe; Cantera-Kintz,Jaime Ricardo.
ABSTRACT Cryptobenthic fishes contribute significantly to the trophic dynamics of coastal ecosystems. This study aimed at determining the composition of this assemblage and testing if its structure differs temporally and spatially in the Uramba National Natural Park Bahía Málaga (Tropical Eastern Pacific). Fish assemblages were collected using artificial traps in three zones, between June 2008 and August 2009. Twenty-six fish species belonging 11 families were recorded. Gobiidae and Labrisomidae were the most representative families (species: 34.6 % and individuals: 66 %). Species richness and abundance increased in a gradient from the interior to the exterior of the park. Using multivariate statistic techniques, a spatial pattern in assemblage structure...

Redescription of Gobius cauerensis (Bleeker, 1853), with discussion of the validity of the species 16
Randall, J.E.; Greenfield, D.W..
Thacker (2004b) regarded the gobiid fish Gnatholepis cauerensis (Bleeker) as a synonym of Gnatholepis anjerensis (Bleeker) and treated G. scapulostigma Herre as the replacement name for what other recent authors had identified as G. cauerensis. The holotype of Gobius cauerensis Bleeker from the Nationaal Natuurhistorische Museum in Leiden is redescribed. Because its colour pattern has faded, the original Bleeker painting is reproduced, the diagnostic colour features noted, and comparison provided with an underwater photograph taken of a specimen before it was collected in the Mentawai Islands (near the type locality of Kauer, Sumatra). Gnatholepis cauerensis is a valid species distinct from G. anjerensis. G. scapulostigma Herre is returned to the synonymy...

Spatial and temporal variations of fish assemblages in a shallow Mediterranean soft-bottom area (Gulf of Fos, France) 5
Letourneur, Y; Darnaude, A; Salen-picard, C; Harmelin-vivien, M.
The fish assemblages of two shallow soft-bottom areas located in the Gulf of Fos (NW Mediterranean) were studied by means of 57 trawl surveys carried out on both seasonal and diel scales between 1983 and 1985. A total of 47 fish species was recorded, with a mean density and biomass of 650 individuals ha(-1) and 2.67 kg ha(-1), respectively. Most of the fluctuations observed were on the spatial scale. Strong differences in fish assemblages were observed between the two areas, with both higher species richness and biomass in the outer part of the gulf (La Gracieuse), while a higher density of individuals characterised its inner part (Bay of Carteau). This spatial pattern was due to a small number of species, such as the gobiids Gobius niger and Pomatoschitus...
