The higher fatty acids (HFA) are important plant constituents that are implicated in the grass tetany hazard in livestock. A method is given whereby a technician can analyze 12 forage samples daily for HFA content. The method consists of saponifying the plant material in ethanol and KOH and extracting the subsequently acidified HFA with petroleum ether. The petroleum ether phase is evaporated and the HFA residue is dissolved in ethanol and then titrated with standardized isobutanolic KOH in the absence of Oxygen by using an Nitrogen atmosphere. A standard plant sample, analyzed over a 37-day period, had a mean of 136 mmol H+kg ± 4.5, where 0.1 mmol H+ℓ palmitic standard was determined with an accuracy of 99 ± 1.9%. |

Seven grass species--desert wheatgrass (Agropyron desertorum), streambank wheatgrass (Agropyron riparium), cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), basin wildrye (Elymus cirtereus), Sandberg's bluegrass (Poa sandbergii), bottlebrush squirreltail (Sitanion hystrix), and needle-and-thread grass (Stipa comata)--were harvested to a 1/2-inch (1.2-cm) stubble height periodically between mid-March and December in most years from 1962 through 1968 at the Saylor Creek Experimental Range in southern Idaho. These samples were analyzed for N, P, S, Ca, Mg, K, Na, Zn, Mn, Cu, and Fe. Certain digestibility fractions (NDF, NDF-ash, DCW, DCW-ash free, and TDDM) were also determined on these samples. In addition, estimates of the soil chemical status, soil moisture contents... |

ABSTRACT This study aimed to verify the efficiency of multivariate analysis in the identification of promising vigor tests for the evaluation of the physiological quality of seed lots of Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk. Seeds of B. decumbens cv. Basilisk were tested for the following parameters: water content, germination, first germination count, cold test, electrical conductivity, seedling growth, seedling dry mass, first count and emergence percentage of seedlings in laboratory substrate, and seedling emergence in the field. The data obtained in each test-all completely randomized experimental designs-were analyzed separately by means of analysis of variance, Scott-Knott’s test, and multivariate analysis. Principal component analysis is efficient to... |
