Aubone, A.; Wöhler, O.C..
With the purpose of easening its application, the theory of parameter estimation by the maximum likelihood method is presented. The theory is general and useful for linear and nonlinear models. The method is applied to the von Bertalanffy´s growth model for individual data and for mean values of length-at-age. Statistical tests to compare parameters from different population groups are presented. Problems caused by lack of verification of assumptions are discussed. An example of its application is given and results of nonlinear least squares estimations are compared to those obtained with Allen´s method. An example of application implemented on a calculus spreadsheet is attached.

Biometrie et Croissance des Jeunes Crevettes Trachypenaeus de la Guadeloupe (Antilles Francaises). 5
The principal biometric relations of juvenile Trachypenaeus similis similis and T. constrictus in Guadeloupe were calculated from 1976 to 1978. The examination of these relations yields few differences between the two species. A growth curve was established according to the sequences of modal values; these were determined according to weekly size frequency distributions over three different periods of time. In the zone studied, the growth of young Trachypenaeus is more rapid than that of the young Penaeus.

Hansen, J.E.; Cousseau, M.B.; Gru, D.L..
A total of 7263 otoliths were collected from anchovy samples taken during two pelagic cruises which were carried out in the Spring of 1978. An statistical analysis of back calculated length distributions of one-year-old fish (L1)was made. The L1 mean values taken by geographical latitude form a cline, with higher values in the northern samples, and decreasing Southwards. Within this latitudinal gradient two main anchovy populations can be identified, one in the region of Buenos Aires Province and the other in Patagonian waters. The L1 of the females is significatively larger than that of the males for the former population, whereas in the Patagonian area differences between sexes are not significant. The parameters of the von Bertalanffy Growth curves, as...

Renzi, M.A.; Santos, B.A.; Abachian, V..
The reading of otoliths sagittae collected during the INIDEP (National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development, Argentina) assessment cruises carried out in the 1993-2003 period allowed to estimate length and weight growth parameters and the condition factor of hake (Merluccius hubbsi) and to prospect the two management units of the species north and south of 41ºS (Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic). A great variability in total length and weight in each age group was observed; nevertheless, stable mean length and weight values per age group were observed in the period analyzed. Besides, the values estimated to determine possible growth variations in each and between both management units north and south of 41ºS were compared. The comparison of growth...

Crescimento de Callinectes danae Smith (Decapoda, Portunidae) da Lagoa da Conceição, Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brasil 104
Branco,Joaquim Olinto; Masunari,Setuko.
Studies on the growth of the blue crab C. danae were carried out by the analysis of size-frequency distributions, and the growth curves were determined for both sexes through Bertalanffy equation. 613 males and 511 females were obtained from 10 collecting sites of the lagoon, at night, monthly from January/88 to July/89. The growth curves in carapace width were described according to the following equations: Wid∞ = 14.0 (1-e-0,6975.t) for males and Wid∞ = 13.3 (1-e-0,6555.t) for females. The growth curves in body weigth were also determined, based on the equations of the growth curves and the relationship between body weight and carapace width. The equations are:Wt = 156.9 (1-e-0,6975.t)2.9153 for males, Wt = 134.0(1-e-0.6555.t)2.8994 for females.

Angelescu, V.A.; Anganuzzi, A..
The paper was developed in order to arrange the data gathered on this subject and to generate new hypotheses in connection with the trophic strategy of the northern stock of anchovy in the area between latitudes 35°-42°S. Such estimates were finally compared with the values of the gravimetric determinations of stomach contents- as converted to caloric values - of individuals grouped by total-length amd age classes, ecological areas, and seasons of the year. The set of results as obtained conforms the initial basis for developing Part IV of the Trophic Ecology of the Argentine anchovy as related to food consumption estimates, by stock biomass and annual classes, with back-calculations to age class 0, and for applying "regional patterns" that result from the...

Sverlij, S.B.; Espinach Ros, A..
Catch per unit effort (CPUE), lenght distribution, age, growth, reproduction, migrations and feeding were studies through samples collected with longlines and a gang of gill-nets of several mesh size. CPUE data showed a progressive decrease of the relative abundance in the Río de la Plata, during the study period. Age was studied from scales. Back-calculations of growth revealed the pressence of Lee's phenomenon. Means lenghts at age were greater in females. No significant difference was found in lenght-weight regressions from both sexes and sampling areas. Only young individuals from 1 to 6 years were caught. None of the fish studied had ripening gonads. Extensive migrations were recorded both in the Paraná and Uruguay rivers. Stomach contents analysis...

Massa, A.M..
The gatuzo, Mustelus schmitti, lives in the Southamerican Atlantic coastal waters from up to 23°S (Brazil)down to 47°S (Argentine), and is the greatest species of the Bonaerense and North Patagonian shores. This species is the most exploited elasmobranch of this region, within the last six years catch has exceeded 10,000 t per year and it is vulnerable to overexploitation due to reproductive aspects, with a low rate of changes, as well as distribution patterns. In order to relate size distribution and nursery areas, and environmental temperature and salinity variability, were obtained within six INIDEP 'Coastal Project' research cruises from 34° to 42°S from boundaries to 50 mts isobaths, during the spring seasons between 1994 to 1997. Cluster analysis...

Cousseau, M.B.; Gru, D.L..
Samples of Sardina fueguina (Sprattus fuegensis)were taken during research cruises carried out in 1974 and 1978. Length and age frequency distributions were analyzed, and von Bertalanffy growth parameters were calculated for the coastal waters of two geographical regions: Province of Santa Cruz and northern part of Malvinas Islands. Lenght and weight growth curves have been calculated for each region and each year. Marked differences have been found between gowth parameters of both regions, and the calculated values showed a good fit with the observed ones. According to these results, it is possible to assume that the sardines of both regions constitute two different populations. However, more information on the total distribution of the species will have...

342 specimens of sparid Calamus brachysomus ”Palma”, collected during a demersal trawl survey by the R. V. Tohallí in April and May1983, were examined. The different techniques used to prepare scales and otoliths for ageing are described and analysed. The otoliths were determined to be the most reliable for ageing studies; 87% of otoliths were readable. The rings observed were assumed to be annual. The mean lengths at age were used to determine the parameters of the Von Bertalanffy growth formula, giving: Lt=50.13(1-e-0.1473(t+2.0704)). The growth curve obtained must be considered provisional due to possible biases in the interpretation of the otoliths, and also due to those arising from the selectivity of the fishing gear.

Growth in the 0-group of Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi) from the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone 20
Santos, B.A.; Renzi, M.A..
Growth of hake (Merluccius hubbsi) in the 0-group from the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone was studied and spawning data were back-calculated by identifying daily growth rings in otoliths of specimens caught during research cruises performed in May 1997, May 1998 and June 1999. Total length (TL) range was 14-69 mm. Increments were read under microscope using an otolith daily ring measurement system (RATOC). Changes in the increment width data present a pattern that seemed to be similar, and independent from birth date of individuals. Data observed and back-calculated showed good accordance with the Laird-Gompertz model. Significant differences between coefficients were found in all comparisons of growth curves for observed and retrocalculated data....

Growth in weight and of some tissues in the bullfrog: fitting nonlinear models during the fattening phase 64
Pereira,Marcelo Maia; Mansano,Cleber Fernando Menegasso; Silva,Edney Pereira da; Stéfani,Marta Verardino De.
Knowledge of the growth of animals is important so that zootechnical activity can be more accurate and sustainable. The objective of this study was to describe the live weight, development of liver tissue and fat body, leg growth, and cumulative food intake of bullfrogs during the fattening phase using nonlinear models. A total of 2,375 bullfrog froglets with an initial weight of 7.03 ± 0.16 g were housed in five fattening pens (12 m²). Ten samplings were performed at intervals of 14 days to obtain the variables studied. These data were used to estimate the parameters of Gompertz and logistic models as a function of time. The estimated values of weight (Wm) and food intake (FIm) at maturity and time when the growth rate is maximum (t*) were closer to...

Growth modeling of castrated Brahman males raised in tropical conditions and born in different seasons 118
Miguel,José A; Melendez,Sandy J; Asenjo,Begoña; Bonilla,Luis M; Ciria,Jesús.
In this paper, parameters that describe growth, as a function of the season in which they were born (dry or rainy), are presented for males of the for males of the Brahman breed that were castrated at birth and raised in their native environment in the intense system of the Llano Venezolano. Data are presented for 1,478 Brahman males that were castrated at birth. Of these, 750 were born in the months of June and July (the rainy season) and 728 were born in January and February (the dry season). The animals born during the dry season were heavier up until the beginning of the fattening period; after weaning, the greatest average daily weight gain coincided in both groups during rainy periods when the pasture production was greater. When comparing the...

Pineda, S.E.; Aubone, A.; Brunetti, N.E..
Beaks of Loliginid squids have very similar morphological features making identification of the species to be quite difficult. A new metodology to identify species from the relative growth of some parts of the beak is presented. Samples of Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensiswere obtained from ten reserch cruises of RVS "Dr. Holmberg" and "Captain Oca Balda" and eight commercial landings at Mar del Plata Port during the period 1992-1993. The results obtained using the new metodology (Metric Discriminant Criterium)were compared with those resulting from the application of the Fisher's Lineal Discriminant Criterium. Both mantle length - rostral length and total weight - rostral length relationships, corresponding to each species were fitted. Either upper or...
