Algicidal effects of aqueous leaf extracts of neem (Azadirachta indica) on Scenedesmus quadricauda (Turp.) de Brébission Acta Botanica
Chia,Mathias Ahii; Akinsanmi,Jamiu Taiwo; Tanimu,Yahuza; Ladan,Zakari.
The application of synthetic algaecides for the control of algae produces by-products that are sometimes toxic to the environment. There is a need for natural and cheap alternatives to synthetic algaecides. In the present study, we investigated the potential of aqueous crude extract of Azadirachta indica to inhibit the growth of Scenedesmus quadricauda. Phytochemical screening of the extract revealed the presence of groups of bioactive compounds that are capable of inhibiting microalgal growth. Chlorophyll a concentration, dry weight production and cell density of microalga decreased with increasing crude extract concentration. After three days of exposure, the 1000 mg/L extract concentration resulted in complete growth inhibition and cell lysis....

Algicidal effects of Zostera marina L. and Zostera noltii Hornem. extracts on the neuro-toxic bloom-forming dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella ArchiMer
Laabir, Mohamed; Grignon-dubois, Micheline; Masseret, Estelle; Rezzonico, Bernadette; Soteras, Giselle; Rouquette, Manuel; Rieuvilleneuve, Fabien; Cecchi, Philippe.
The inhibitory effects of crude extracts of Zostera marina L and Zostera noltii Hornemann on the growth of the toxic red tide dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella were investigated through bio-assays. Methanolic and aqueous extracts were prepared from fresh and detrital leaves of Z. marina and Z. noltii collected in the Thau lagoon and Arcachon bay (France). All the extracts exhibited significant inhibition of A. catenella growth, whatever the species and without the need of continuous addition of extracts. The effective concentrations (EC50) varied in the range 0.036-0.199 g L-1 for Z. noltii and 0.036-0.239 g L-1 for Z. marina. Methanolic extracts prepared from fresh plant tissues were the most potent, with EC50 of 0.036-0.039 and 0.036-0.045 g L-1, for...

Exploitation of trichoderma species on the growth of Pythium Aphanidermatum in Chilli BJM
Muthukumar,A.; Eswaran,A.; Sanjeevkumas,K..
Damping-off of chilli caused by Pythium aphanidermatum is a major nursery disease in vegetables. In vitro experiments evaluated the effect of eight isolates of Trichoderma species (from chilli rhizosphere) were tested against P. aphanidermatum. All the Trichoderma species had varied antagonistic effects against the pathogen. Among them, TVC3 recorded maximum growth inhibition of P. aphanidermatum and produced more amounts of volatile and non-volatile metabolites. The culture filtrate of the Trichoderma isolate TVC3 recorded complete inhibition on the mycelial growth of pathogen at 15% concentration. Moreover, chilli seeds treated with culture filtrate of the isolate TVC3 recorded maximum germination percentage, shoot length, root length and vigour index of...

Growth inhibitory effect of extracts from Reynoutria sp. plants against Spodoptera littoralis larvae Agrociencia
Pavela,Roman; Vrchotová,Nadezda; Šerá,Bozena.
Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the effects of methanolic extracts from three Reynoutria species on feeding, development and mortality of larvae S. littoralis. The extracts of all three Reynoutria species did not reveal feeding deterrence in the Spodoptera littoralis larvae. However they significantly decreased the larvae growth and the efficiency of conversion of the ingested and digested food. Conversion of the ingested food was lower, when compared with control larvae. The use of food provoked prolongation of the larvae development and chronic toxicity. Even if extracts of all three plant species were effecting the larvae mortality with the same results (LC50 ranged from 0.5 to 1 mg g-1 in all extracts), the impact on growth inhibition in...

Importance of the agar-media in the evaluation of bacteriocin activity against the same test-microorganisms BJPS
Azevedo,Pamela Oliveira de Souza de; Molinari,Francesco; Oliveira,Ricardo Pinheiro de Souza.
Abstract Bacteriocins are peptides produced by various species of bacteria, especially lactic acid bacteria, which exhibit a large spectrum of action against spoilage bacteria and foodborne pathogens. Successful application of techniques for quantitative or qualitative bacteriocin determination relies not only on the sensitivity of the test-microorganisms, but also on the agar-medium employed. Cell free supernatants are routinely used to preliminary screen for antimicrobial activity of bacteria by means of the agar well diffusion method, but the supernatant may also include other molecules (such as medium components and/or intracellular compounds) accidentally released during cell free supernatant preparation, which may interfere with the assay....

Screening the antifungal activity of essential oils against decay fungi from palmyrah leaf handicrafts Biol. Res.
Mahilrajan,Subajini; Nandakumar,Jeyarani; Kailayalingam,Robika; Manoharan,Nilushiny Aloysius; SriVijeindran,SriThayalan.
BACKGROUND: The whitish tender leaves of Palmyrah are used for making handicrafts. The problem with these articles is discolouration with time and become more brittle due to fungal attack. This could be prevented by some protective coating. Instead of expensive and harmful chemicals we decided to test natural plant essential oils to control fungal attack. Palmyrah leaf article decay fungi were isolated from two different sites of Jaffna peninsula. In this investigation Antifungal Activity of different plant essential oils from neem (Azadirachta indica), castor (Ricinus communis), citronella (Cymbopogon sp) and camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) obtained from local market have been evaluated against isolated fungi. For screening of Antifungal activity, tests and...

Toxicological effects of ciprofloxacin and chlorhexidine on growth and chlorophyll a synthesis of freshwater cyanobacteria BJPS
Azevedo,Fernanda Cristina Rezende; Vaz,Izabela Cristina Dias; Barbosa,Francisco Antônio Rodrigues; Magalhães,Sérgia Maria Starling.
Cyanobacteria are phytoplanktonic microorganisms that are susceptible to the deleterious effects of pharmaceutical residues in the aquatic environment, which poses a challenge to the environment exposed to diverse pharmaceutical products and their potential effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the antibiotic substances ciprofloxacin and chlorhexidine in pharmaceutical preparations on the growth and production of chlorophyll of two cyanobacterial strains, Microcystis aeruginosa and Microcystis panniformis, isolated from a lake in a Brazilian environmental protection area. The EC50 and EC10 of chlorhexidine for M. aeruginosa were 206.4 µg/L and 108.5 µg/L, respectively, and for M. panniformis were 171.4 µg/L and 116.6 µg/L,...
