Haemocytes are the key elements of a complex defence system on which crustacean immunity is largely based. We report here for the first time in a crustacean that haemocytes are involved in the synthesis of antimicrobial peptides similar to those described in other arthropod classes. These molecules isolated from the penaeid shrimp Penaeus vannamei are members of an homogeneous farnily which differ from the antimicrobial peptides previously described in that they combine in a single molecule a proline-rich arninoterminal domain, and a cyclic carboxy-terminal domain containing three intramolecular disulphide bridges. Caractérisation morphologique et fonctionnelle des hémocytes d'Ostrea edulis et de Crassostrea gigas, mollusques bivalves. Etude in vitro de leurs interactions avec le protozoaire Bonamia ostreae (Ascetospora) ArchiMer

La morphologie et l'équipement enzymatique des hémocytes de deux espèces d'huîtres, Ostea edulis et Crassostrea gigas ont été étudiés. L'analyse des fonctions des hémocytes dans les mécanismes immunitaires a permis de mettre en évidence leur rôle de macrophage, mais n'a pas fait apparaître de différence interspécifique dans les phénomènes des cytocidie oxygène dépendants, susceptible d'expliquer la permissivité d'Ostrea edulis pour Bonamia ostreae et la résistance de Crassostrea gigas. L'infection in vitro de primocultures d'hémocytes des deux espèces démontre un mécanisme d'entrée par phagocytose, doublé chez Ostrea edulis d'une possible pénétration active. The mytiliculture is one of the most important aquaculture in the world, however, little is known on the mussel immune system, which plays a critical role in case of infectious diseases. Like all the other invertebrates, our model, the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, possesses only an innate immune system considered to be primitive and non-specific. In the present study, our results showed that the mussel immune system (i) is capable of responding differently to a variety of stimulations, suggesting a specific recognition process; (ii) reacts differently according to the geographic origin of the animals, showing an adaptation to their own environment; (iii) is influenced by the season, which explains the seasonal mortalities; (iv) presents...

Etude d'une prolifération hémocytaire chez la moule Mytilus edulis ArchiMer

Hemic proliferative disease in the bay mussel, Mytilus edulis, has been studied following mortalities in Washington State (USA). The disease has been reproduced in the labortory. The establishment of this experimental model led to study tumoral characteristics of the atypic hemocytes : ultrastrure, in vitro cultivation, transplantation. The infectious etiology of this tumor has been verified. It has been hypothesized to result from a viral infection since retrovirus-like particules have been observed following induction by bromodeoxyuridine. Etude expérimentale de l'influence de deux stress environnementaux sur les défenses immunitaires et la résistance à la vibriose de la crevette Penaeus stylirostris ArchiMer

Cette étude a pour objectif de mesurer chez la crevette Penaeus stylirostris l'effet de deux stress environnementaux, ammoniaque et hypoxie, sur les défenses immunitaires (hémocytes et prophénoloxydase) et la résistance à l' infection par la bactérie Vibrio penaeicidae. Les crevettes, sélectionnées en stade C du cycle de mue, ont été soumises pendant 24 heures à plus ieurs doses d'ammoniaque N.NH3 ( 1, 1 .5, 2, 2.5 et 3 mg/l) ou placées en situation d' hypoxie (1 ppm vs 6ppm en normoxie). L'effet du stress a été évalué à 24 h par la mesure de la capacité osmorégulatrice ainsi que les paramètres immunitaires.
