La réponse du douglas à la canicule de 2003 en France a été étudiée à l'aide de profils microdensitométriques obtenus sur des arbres de 3 tests clonaux situés dans 3 régions différentes. La canicule a significativement affecté la formation du bois du douglas. Les arbres du site de Chassenoix, situé dans le Morvan, ont réagi plus fortement que ceux des 2 autres : le cerne de l'année de la canicule est plus étroit et moins dense que le même cerne dans les 2 autres sites et plus étroit et moins dense que les cernes immédiatement antérieur (2002) et postérieur (2004) dans le même site ; la formation du bois s'est arrêtée plus tôt et le bois final ne s'est pas complètement développé. Short-rotation coppice of hybrid poplar is a promising renewable feedstock for biofuel production. Breeding for high biomass in short-rotation coppice has started only recently. Two hybrid poplar families were grown at two sites in Europe and phenotyped for a variety of biomass-related traits (1) to examine the extent of phenotypic and genetic variation in biomass production, ramification, resprouting, and phenology, (2) to search for genomic regions involved in productivity, and (3) to determine the effect of the environment on the expression of these traits. Paramètres génétiques de la concentration plasmatique en FSH des agnelles de race Lacaune viande Inra

Cette étude estime la variabilité phénotypique et génétique des variables FSH et log FSH mesurées à partir d’un seul prélèvement sanguin aux environs de 33 jours, sur 892 agnelles Lacaune viande nées de juillet à septembre 1983 dans 21 élevages et issues de 42 pères utilisés en insémination. Les effets « élevage » et « père » sont très significatifs. L’héritabilité est de 0,38 pour le taux de FSH et de 0,47 pour le log FSH, avec des variances génétiques père et mère équivalentes. Les effets « type de naissance » et « gain 10-30 jours » ne sont pas significatifs. L’effet « heure de prélèvement » est significatif uniquement pour le log FSH. Le taux de FSH des agnelles pourrait donc être utilisé comme critère de sélection, si les études ultérieures...

QTL analysis for leaf gas exchange in an apple progeny grown under atmospheric constraints Inra

The capacity of the apple tree to tolerate temporary abiotic constraints was investigated through leaf responses to different vapor pressure deficits (VPD). A ‘Starkrimson’ x ‘Granny Smith’ F1 progeny of 125 full-sibs whip-grafted onto Pajam® 2 rootstocks and pot-cultivated was studied (three replicates). After two months, plants were transferred into a controlled environment chamber ensuring five increasing VPDs, from 0.7 to 2.7 kPa, other conditions remaining constant. Leaf stomatal conductance (gsw), net CO2 assimilation (An) and transpiration (E) rates were measured, and water use efficiency (WUE, An/E) computed. Ring density record of phenotypic plasticity and adaptation to drought in Douglas-fir Inra

Microdensity profiles of Douglas-fir’s clones and weather data were used to study phenotypic plasticity (dendroplasticity). Within-ring microdensity was interpreted as the variation of tree response to weather-controlled changes of water balance during selected growing-seasons. An original norm of reaction was obtained by pairing evident points of abrupt changes in the ring microdensity profiles and in the weather indices. The coefficients of the non-linear models adjusted to the reaction norms were analysed as dendroplasticity variables. Selection perspectives for genetic improvement of wood stiffness in hybrid larch (Larix x eurolepis Henry) Inra

Genetic variability of modulus of elasticity (MOE) was investigated in three genetic trials, including two progeny (16 years old) and one clonal (19 years old) trials of hybrid larch (Larix x eurolepis Henry). MOE was directly assessed on standing trees using the Rigidimeter, a bending device, and related to other traits including height, BH diameter and wood density. Mean MOE ranged from 5,183 to 9,228 MPa among families in the progeny trials and from 4,591 to 11,486 MPa in the clonal trial. Among traits studied, MOE was one of the most variable traits. It was strongly and positively related to wood density at both the individual and genotype mean levels. Interestingly too, wood stiffness did not seem, or only weakly, unfavourably linked to stem diameter...
