A standard, universally useful classification scheme for deepwater habitats needs to be established so that descriptions of these habitats can be accurately and efficiently applied among scientific disciplines. In recent years many marine benthic habitats in deep water have been described using geophysical and biological data. These descriptions can vary from one investigator to another, which makes it difficult to compare habitats and associated biological assemblages among geographic regions. Using geophysical data collected with a variety of remote sensor systems and in situ biological and geologic observations, we have constructed a classification scheme that can be used in describing marine benthic habitats in deep water. |

Three specimens of Atractus natans were found during fieldwork in the “Reserva Mamirauá”, Amazonas and a fourth one in the “Estação Científica Ferreira Penna”, Floresta de Caxiuanã, Pará, Brazil. The specimens from Mamirauá were all collected in floating logs in várzea forest during the period of flooding. The new species is small (maximum total length 308 mm) with a coniform head, has 17-17-17 smooth dorsals, without apical pits, male lacking pre-anal keels, ventrals 136-162, caudals 19-25, anal undivided. One or two postoculars, loreal 1.6 –2.8 times as long as high, frontal triangular, wider than long. Maxillary teeth 5-6. The hemipenis is bilobed, with bifurcated sulcus spematicus, capitulum with calyces covered by very small spines, body covered by... |

A new species of the previously monotypic catfish genus Phreatobius is described from an artificial well in the village of Rio Pardo, located 90 km south of the city of Porto Velho, State of Rondônia, Brazil, in the drainage area of the Rio Branco (Rio Madeira system, Amazon basin). Phreatobius dracunculus n. sp. differs from its only congener, P. cisternarum, by the absence of eyes (vs. present), the lack of dark integumentary pigmentation (vs. faint dark pigment always present), the presence of five pectoral-fin rays (vs. four), ventral procurrent rays 11-13 (vs. 22 to 26), dorsal procurrent rays 29-31 (vs. 42 to 50), fewer vertebrae (52 or 53 vs. 59 to 64) and the larger pseudotympanus. The new species shows all diagnostic characters so far proposed for... |

Archival tagging provides a unique way to study the spatial dynamics and habitat of pelagic fish. This technique generates lagrangian data of a particular type in marine ecology: although highly informative about processes at different scales (e.g. horizontal movements versus diving behaviour), such data are impaired by location errors and the lack of combination with actual environmental variability. The present paper introduces a framework for modelling bluefin tuna movement in relation to its habitat, using records of light, depth and temperature from archival tags. Based on data assimilation concepts and methods, we show how an explicit formulation of the observation process and the statistics of external variables (e.g. ambient temperature) can... |

Wild boar populations are rapidly spreading through midwest Brazil, causing crop damage, impacting biodiversity and, possibly, spreading diseases to livestock. Despite their threat, little is known about introduced populations in Brazilian agricultural landscapes. The critical lack of knowledge about basic aspects of wild boar spatial ecology led us to evaluate home range sizes, activity pattern and habitat selection in interface regions of agricultural crops and natural riparian forests. We captured and monitored seven individuals using global position system collars throughout 19 to 77 days. The home range sizes calculated by Minimum Convex Polygon and Biased Random Bridge Kernel ranged from 273 to 1253 ha (median = 497 ha) and from 129 to 779 ha (median... |

Observations and recordings of Picumnus nebulosus Sundevall, 1866 were carried out at Santa Rita farm (21º15'S, 50º00'), municipality of Palmeira, state of Paraná, southern Brazil, from 1984 to 1991. The song of this species (0.25 s to 0.64 s total time) is composed by a series of four to six high pitched (6.3 to 7.8 kHz) and short (0.03 to 0.05 s) notes (n=23). The fight call is a series of very short notes emitted between 2 to 8 kHz during 0.23 s to 0.32 s (n=34). The drum, a sequence of pulses, is emitted during 3.5 to 7.2 s (n=42); the four sequences in the begining are composed by four pulses and the rest by three pulses. P. nebulosus was more abundant in forest patches than in continuous forest. It was usually watched foraging in branches 1 to 4 mm... |

This paper presents a novel application of the geostatistical multivariate method known as min–max autocorrelation factors (MAFs) for analysing fisheries survey data in a space–time context. The method was used to map essential fish habitats and evaluate the variability in time of their occupancy. Research surveys at sea on marine fish stocks have been undertaken for several decades now. The data are time series of yearly maps of fish density, making it possible to analyse the space–time variability in fish spatial distributions. Space–time models are key to addressing conservation issues requiring the characterization of variability in habitat maps over time. Here, the variability in fisheries survey data series is decomposed in space and time to address... |

The habitat, population density, distribution and diet of Octopus insularis Leite & Haimovici, 2008 were studied in the Atol das Rocas Biological Reserve, based on visual census carried out in fixed quadrants. For each octopus den, we collected data on octopus size, substrate, type of den, and food remains around it. A total of 100 octopus dens were found within the fixed quadrants. The highest density occurred at Mapas area (0.30 inds/100 m²) and the lowest at Crista Algálica (0.07 inds/100 m²). The preferred den type was the one on the reef bed (69%), reinforcing the importance of rocky substrates for this species. A total of 454 food items, classified into 22 distinct taxa, were collected. The class Crustacea was best represented, accounting for... |

The crustaeeans of Aeglidae family oeeur in South America's fresh water enviranments, featuring as important links in the food chains. The present article has the intention to give an acount of the results from investigations made from April/2000 to July/2001 on the biological and ecological features of Aegla leptodactyla Buckup & Rossi, 1977, an endemic species from the headwaters of the Rio Pelotas Basin in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The sampling was performed at the Rio da Divisa, tributary of Rio Pelotas, municipal district of São José dos Ausentes, Rio Grande do Sul. The animais were collected with a hand net (puçá) at four different sites of the river. High contents of dissolved oxygen was verified, with a medium value of 108% and alow... |

This study was the first to be undertaken since 1901, since when natural and industrial changes had occurred to affect the habitat. Observations are reported here for the banks of the north and south shores, using certain points as reference. Features of the 2 shores are described, and an inventory given of the fauna of the banks. Hydrozoan Cnidaria, Bryozoans, Annelids, Molluscs, Crustacea and fish are listed with notes, and particular attention is given to the crabs found (Rhithropanopeus harrisii tridentatus). The monthly distribution of crab sizes and sexes is given, and the species of animals found in association with crabs is shown to vary according to the site studied. The percentage of female crabs found to be fertile each month was investigated,... |
