Antennule development during copepodite phase of some representatives of Harpacticoida (Copepoda, Crustacea) Naturalis
Dahms, Hans-Uwe.
The copepodite antennule development of representatives of 6 harpacticoid families is studied and discussed in detail and that of 8 genera of harpacticoids from 7 families is schematically illustrated. Twenty-seven genera out of 17 harpacticoid families are compared on the basis of own investigations and data from the literature. The origin of newly formed segments can be determined by seta numbers of segments, relative segment length, furrows indicating previous articulations and by the position of the segment which bears the proximal aesthetasc. There are 2 zones of segment formation, both located in the middle part of the first antenna. Normal segment formation takes place distally from the second, aesthetasc-bearing segment from C I to C II and...

Competition between the sibling species <i>Tisbe holothuriae</i> and <i>T. battagliai</i> (Harpacticoida) OMA
Bergmans, M.; Janssens, P.P.M..
The influence of the salinity on the performance of the sibling species <i>Tisbe holothuriae</i> and <i>T. battagliai</i> in pure and mixed cultures was studied, using laboratory stocks adapted to 32 pro mille for over 175 generations. Cohort studies show that <i>T. holothuriae</i> has higher growth rates (R0 and r) at 32 pro mille, <i>T. battagliai</i> at 20 pro mille. The latter's life cycle is much less affected by the difference in salinity. 'De Wit' replacement series were used to study competitive interactions. Without water renewal, <i>T. holothuriae</i> eliminates its sibling species in less than 2 generations, apparently through chemical interference. With water...

Description, distribution and microhabitats of a new species of Tisbe (Copepoda: Harpacticoida: Tisbidae) from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent field at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (37 degrees N, Lucky Strike) ArchiMer
Ivanenko, Viatcheslav; Ferrari, Frank D.; Defaye, Danielle; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Sarrazin, Jozee.
A new species, Tisbe dahmsi sp. nov. (Crustacea, Copepoda: Harpacticoida: Tisbidae) is described from the Eiffel Tower edifice located in the Lucky Strike vent field (37 degrees N) (Mid-Atlantic Ridge MAR, 1698 m). The samples were collected in colonization experiments (SMAC arrays) that were deployed in 1997 during the MARVEL cruise and recovered in 1998 during the PICO cruise. Other specimens were collected during the MoMARETO cruise during which a physico-chemical characterization of copepod microhabitats was done. The new species belongs to the T. gracilis group based on similarities of the spine-like inner seta on the proximal endopodal segment of the male second swimming leg, which is terminally bifurcate. Re-examination of the closest relative and...

Haplocyclops torresi n. sp. and Potamocaris estevesi Reid, 1991 from Brazil, with a proposal for revalidation of the genus Haplocyclops Kiefer, 1952 (Copepoda) Naturalis
Falavigna Da Rocha, Carlos Eduardo; Torres, Isabela Claret; Maia-Barbosa, Paulina Maria.
The cyclopid genus Haplocyclops Kiefer, 1952, generally considered as a subgenus of Bryocyclops, is revalidated, and its diagnosis emended. Haplocyclops torresi sp. n. is described from the Rio Doce, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, the first record of this genus from the South American continent. Harpacticoids found in the same river were identified as Potamocaris estevesi Reid, 1991. The latter species is redescribed, the female described for the first time, and its distribution area is widened with new records in rivers of the southeastern part of Brazil. The mouthparts of P. estevesi are described for the first time.

Laophontopsis Sars and the taxonomic concept of the Normanellinae (Copepoda: Harpacticoida): A revision Naturalis
Huys, Rony; Willems, Kris A..
The taxonomie concept of the subfamily Normanellinae Lang (Harpacticoida, Laophontidae) is revised. As a result a new family Laophontopsidae is proposed to accommodate Laophontopsis Sars and two new genera Aculeopsis and Telodocus. It is concluded that the presumed boreo-mediterranean distribution pattern displayed by the type species L. lamellifera (Claus) is merely the result of erroneous identifications. The population of northwest Europe is assigned to a new species L. borealis and another new species L. monardi is proposed for Monard’s (1928) material from Banyuls-sur-Mer. L. secundus Sewell is placed in the new genus Telodocus. Aculeopsis gen. nov. embraces only A. longisetosa spec. nov. and constitutes the most primitive genus of the family. The...

Mating behaviour of the groundwater copepod Parastenocaris phyllura Kiefer, 1938 (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) Naturalis
Glatzel, Thomas; Schminke, Horst Kurt.
In the course of a cohort study of Parastenocaris phyllura several matings were observed under a microscope and recorded on video. In Parastenocaris phyllura no “precopulatory mate guarding” was found. Each mating behaviour comprises three phases and lasts for about 15 minutes, during which time the male actively moves its antennulae and antennae, pereiopods 1, 2, 3, 4, and furcal rami. The female is held in a characteristic position by the male and is entirely passive during the process.

Precopulatory mate guarding and mating in Tachidius discipes (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) Naturalis
Dürbaum, Johannes.
Precopulatory mate guarding and mating behaviour of Tachidius discipes Giesbrecht, 1881, has been analysed using a video camera mounted on a microscope. Males preferably accompany fourth or fifth stage female copepodids during precopulatory mate guarding; only rarely are third copopodid stages guarded. Rare cases of males clasping juvenile males are also known. Males are active during mate guarding and constantly change the site of attachment of their antennules. This behaviour may ensure continued association of the adult male with the juvenile copepodid when the latter moults during the mate guarding phase. The final moult of the female, once observed only, lasts only 2 minutes. Copulation immediately follows but is preceded by the male’s control of the...

Stenocaris pontica Chappuis & Serban, 1953 und Stenocaropsis similis Cottarelli & Venanzetti, 1989 (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) aus dem Mittelmeer mit einer Revision der Gattungen Stenocaropsis Apostolov, 1982 und Stenocaris Sars, 1909 Naturalis
Kunz, Helmut.
Stenocaris pontica Chappuis & Serban is for the first time recorded from the Mediterranean Sea (Croatie coast) and described. Stenocaropsis similis Cottarelli & Venanzetti, also recorded from the Croatic coast, was compared with type material of Stenocaropsis pristina (Wells). This led to a new separation of the two species. Stenocaropsis valkanovi (Marinov) is regarded as species inquirenda. The genera Stenocaropsis Apostolov and Stenocaris Sars are revised.

The respiration of five brackish-water harpacticoid copepod species OMA
Herman, P.M.J.; Heip, C.H.R..
The dependency of respiration rate on body weight at 20°C was determined for five meiobenthic copepods from a brackish-water habitat. The respiration rate of the four smaller species was generally high, = 10-14 nl O2.h-1.µg dry wt-1, but was much lower for larger species, <i>Canuella perplexa</i> T. & A. Scott 1893 (2-3 nl O2.h-1.µg1). This pattern is discussed in terms of the adaptive behaviour of the populations. The significance of respiration rates in the evolution of populations is illustrated by differences between the respiration rates of Belgian <i>Tachidius discipes</i> Giesbrecht...
