A 4D-variational approach applied to an eddy-permitting North Atlantic configuration: Synthetic and real data assimilation of altimeter observations ArchiMer
Ferron, Bruno.
The increasing number of oceanic observations calls for the use of synthetic methods to provide consistent analyses of the oceanic variability that will support a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms. In this study, a 1/3 degrees eddy-permitting model of the North Atlantic (from 20 degrees S to 70 degrees N) is combined with a 4D-variational method to estimate the oceanic state from altimeter observations. This resolution allows a better extraction of the physical content of altimeter data since the model spatial scales are more consistent with the data than coarser assimilation exercises because of a lower error in model representativity. Several strategies for the assimilation window are tested through twin experiments carried out under the...

Circulation and water mass transports on the East Antarctic shelf in the Mertz Glacier region ArchiMer
Martin, Antoine; Houssais, Marie-noelle; Le Goff, Herve; Marec, Claudie; Dausse, Denis.
The East Antarctic shelf off Adélie-George V Land is known to be an important region for Dense Shelf Water (DSW) formation as a result of intense sea ice production in the Mertz Glacier Polynya during the winter season. It is also a region where the warm modified Circumpolar Deep Water (mCDW) penetrates onto the shelf during the summer. Using hydrographic observations from a summer survey in 2008 we implement a box inverse model to propose a comprehensive view of the steady state circulation on this shelf in summer. Additional information from mooring observations collected on the depression slope is used to provide context to the retrieved circulation scheme. Over the depression slope, the summer baroclinic structure of the currents is found to contrast...

Deglacial delta δ18 and hydrologic variability in the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans ArchiMer
Gibbons, Fern T.; Oppo, Delia W.; Mohtadi, Mahyar; Rosenthal, Yair; Cheng, Jun; Liu, Zhengyu; Linsley, Braddock K..
Evidence from geologic archives suggests that there were large changes in the tropical hydrologic cycle associated with the two prominent northern hemisphere deglacial cooling events, Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1; similar to 19 to 15 kyr BP; kyr BP = 1000 yr before present) and the Younger Dryas (similar to 12.9 to 11.7 kyr BP). These hydrologic shifts have been alternatively attributed to high and low latitude origin. Here, we present a new record of hydrologic variability based on planktic foraminifera-derived delta O-18 of seawater (delta O-18(sw)) estimates from a sediment core from the tropical Eastern Indian Ocean, and using 12 additional delta O-18(sw) records, construct a single record of the dominant mode of tropical Eastern Equatorial Pacific and...

Etude de la variabilité de la circulation du gyre subpolaire de l'Atlantique Nord à partir des données Ovide et de mesures satellitaires ArchiMer
Gourcuff, Claire.
The cyclonic circulation of the North Atlantic subpolar gyre, between 50°N and 63°N, plays a key role in the climate variability. The Ovide program contributes to the observation of the circulation in this region. A section is repeated every two years in summer since 2002 between Greenland and Portugal following a path close the Fourex 1997 section. To get transport estimates across the sections, a geostrophic box inverse model is used, constrained with direct current measurements. Our new estimates of Fourex transports show the need to use constraints temporally associated with the section to get transports estimates representative of the circulation at the section realisation dates. It is also shown that altimetry velocities can be used instead of ADCP...
