Effects of egg shell color and storage duration on the external and internal egg quality traits of ATAK-S layer hybrids Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Şekeroğlu,Ahmet; Gök,Hamdiye; Duman,Mustafa.
The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of storage duration and egg shell color on external and internal egg quality traits. Eggs were obtained from 29-week--old ATAK-S layer hybrids reared in a traditional cage system. Storage durations were set as 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. Shell color was classified as dark (59.00-67.99); moderate (68.00-70.99) and light (71.00-79.99) using the ΔΕ values of the eggs. The storage duration significantly affected the egg weight (P≤0.01), specific gravity (P≤0.01), breaking strength (P≤0.01), shell thickness (P≤0.01), shell weight (P≤0.01), surface area (P≤0.01), albumen index (P≤0.01), yolk index (P≤0.01),...

Egg quality of laying hens in different conditions of storage, ages and housing densities R. Bras. Zootec.
Menezes,Pasquoal Carrazzoni de; Lima,Evilda Rodrigues de; Medeiros,Juliana Pinto de; Oliveira,Wanessa Noadya Ketruy de; Evêncio-Neto,Joaquim.
The objective of this research was to evaluate the quality of eggs from Dekalb White hens under different temperatures (room temperature, 25 ºC; and refrigeration, 8 ºC), storage times (7, 14 and 21 days), age of birds (35, 40, 45 and 50 weeks) and housing densities (625, 500, 416.6 and 357.14 cm²/birds). Haugh unit (HU) values and albumen height of 1,120 eggs from 528 laying hens, randomly allocated to four groups with different population densities were evaluated. The results showed a significant effect on Haugh units, between the time and storage conditions and between the ages of laying hens and storage condition. Eggs stored in refrigeration showed less weight loss and better Haugh unit indices when compared with eggs stored at room temperature. The...

Ethological parameters and performance of Hy Line W-98 and ISA Brown hens when housed in furnished cages Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Roll,V.F.B.; Levrino,G.A.M.; Briz,R.C.; Buil,T..
This study was carried out throughout a laying period to compare the behaviour and performance of two groups of commercial layers, 180 ISA Brown and 120 Hy line W98, housed at 17 weeks of age in furnished cages with a nest box, perches, dust-bath, and claw shortening device. Based on productive parameters, the model of furnished cages studied is suitable for both, Isa Brown and Hy line hens. The study suggested that strain has a significant effect on feather condition and on some behavioural displays, particularly those related to the use of a dust-bath.

Evaluation and Validation of the Six Housekeeping Genes for Normalizing Mrna Expression in the Ovarian Follicles and Several Tissues in Chicken Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Qin,N; Shan,X; Sun,X; Liswaniso,S; Chimbaka,IM; Xu,R.
ABSTRACT Expression of housekeeping genes is relatively constant in different tissues and cells by RT-qPCR analysis. Housekeeping genes (HGs) are usually utilized as the reference to evaluate and compare mRNA expression abundances of target genes in different cells or tissues sampled. However, the expression stabilities of different HGs in diverse samples may appear divergence. Currently, there is no exact reference data of HGs in hen ovarian follicular tissues during egg-laying period available yet. In this study, we detected the expression of 18SrRNA, ACTB, HOXC8, GAPDH, alpha-A, and alpha-D mRNA in the varied-size ovarian follicles (1-8 mm in diameter and F5), hearts, livers, spleens, lungs, and breast muscles of the laying hens by RT-qPCR, to analyze...

Expression of cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) in hen ovary Biol. Res.
Li,Pengfei; Yu,Xuejing; Xie,Jianshan; Yao,Xiaolei; Liu,Wenzhong; Yao,Jianbo; Zhu,Zhiwei; Lyu,Lihua.
Abstract Background: Cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART), discovered initially by via differential display RT-PCR analysis of brains of rats administered cocaine, is expressed mainly in central nervous system or neuronal origin cells, and is involved in a wide range of behaviors, such as regulation of food intake, energy homeostasis, and reproduction. The hens egg-laying rate mainly depends on the developmental status of follicles, expression of CART have not been identified from hen follicles, the regulatory mechanisms of CART biological activities are still unknown. The objective of this study was to characterize the mRNA expression of CART in hen follicular granulosa cells and determine CART peptide localization and regulatory role...

Requirement of Digestible Methionine + Cystine to Molted Laying Hens Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Oliveira Filho,PA; Cruz,FGG; Rufino,JPF; Silva,EM; Viana Filho,GB; Silva,FM.
ABSTRACT The present study aimed to determine the ideal requirement of digestible methionine + cystine to molted laying hens. The experimental period lasted 105 days, divided into five periods of 21 days. 144 Hisex White laying hens with 84 weeks-of-age were used. The experimental design was completely randomized with treatments constituted for six levels of digestible methionine + cystine (0.45, 0.50, 0.55, 0.60, 0.65, and 0.70%) in the diets, with four replicates of six birds each. Data collected were evaluated by polynomial regression at 5%. There was a significant effect (p<0.05) of digestible methionine + cystine on feed intake, energy intake, protein intake, egg production, and egg mass. Internal egg quality presented positive linear effect...
