A eficácia organizacional do ensino superior agrário português IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

Agribusiness higher education development – ahead: the project results at a glance AgEcon
Karpati, Laszlo.
This booklet that has caught your attention contains basic information about the AHEAD project sponsored by the EU’s TEMPUS grant. This project was carried out between University of Zagreb (and other Croatian partners) and four EU-based universities. The project was very ambitious and it is my pleasure to state that the great majority of the objectives were carried out with high quality during the 3 years project time span. The main results of the AHEAD project can be found in this booklet, and I would like to mention just a few of them: • A new MBA training started in Zagreb with international recognition • 61 subjects of 3 BSc/MSc trainings were reviewed and modified, • a study was created in order to determine the short – and long – term expert demand...

Agricultural Economics Education in Ukrainian Agricultural Universities: An Efficiency Analysis Using Data Envelopment Analysis AgEcon
Lissitsa, Alexej; Coelli, Tim J.; Rao, D.S. Prasada.
Ukraine's transition from a centrally-planned to a market economy has had a profound effect upon its agricultural sector and agricultural universities. A substantial reduction in state financing has forced universities to adopt a range of survival strategies, with varying degrees of success. In this paper we use data envelopment analysis to examine the technical efficiency of 44 agricultural economics programs from 19 Ukrainian universities during the 2002/03 academic year. Our empirical results indicate wide disparities in performance, ranging from 36% to 100% technical efficiency. A second-stage analysis suggests that factors such as student demand, commercial activities and staff quality help explain a portion of this variation.

Estudos recentes provam a actualidade do tema (e.g. Cresse et al., 2003; Kouzes e Posner, 2005; Turrentine, 2001).

Dilemmas in Hungarian higher education AgEcon
Herneczky, Andrea; Marselek, Sandor.
Higher rates of employment are essential to economic growth. The best way to increase the rate of employment is through training and education. Transforming education to mass education, as well as the weakening of the previous knowledge of students has caused a quality decay among job-seekers. The motivation behind education is not sound; the number of majors in higher education is higher than necessary and is not adjusted to the requirements of the labour market. Hands-on training has been forced into the background. Career offices at large colleges and universities may improve the entrants’ chances of finding a job. Higher education institutions are also responsible for the continuous further training of their graduate students with BSc degrees, which...

Equity, quality and relevance in higher education in Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Schwartzman,Simon.
Brazilian higher education has doubled its size in the 1990s, going from 1.5 million to more than 3 million students in the period. This expansion was mostly due to the growth of private education, which, in 2002, accounted for about two thirds of the enrollment. Is expansion making higher education more accessible to persons coming from the poorer segments of society? Is the quality of higher education suffering by the speed of this expansion? Is Brazil educating enough qualified persons to attend to the country's needs to participate in the new, knowledge-intensive and global economy? What public policies should be implemented, in order to foster the values of social equity and relevance? What are the policy implications of these developments? This...

HIGHER EDUCATION AND THE LABOR MARKET IN THE STATE OF IDAHO AgEcon
Nelson, James R.; Julia-Wise, Roxana.
This report summarizes major findings of a study carried out on the structure of Idaho's labor market in relation to higher education. Changes in the types of jobs available, both in terms of industries and occupations, greatly affect the relationship of higher education to the labor market. The nation-wide move from a manufacturing-oriented economy towards an information-based economy has led to a marked increase in the number of jobs requiring a college education. The following information documents that trend and includes projections made for the year 2005. The focus is on future demand and associated earnings premiums for college educated labor force in Idaho.

Higher Education Costs and the Production of Extension AgEcon
Laband, David N.; Lentz, Bernard F..
Do cost considerations justify the current structure of production of extension services in which one or more providers exists in virtually all of the contiguous U.S. states? Provision of extension services has sizable cost implications for the host institutions. Yet, to our knowledge, there has been virtually no analysis of the impact of extension on higher education costs. Using academic year 1995-1996 data, we estimate a multiproduct cost function for 1,445 public institutions of higher education in the United States, including 65 that provide extension services. We find evidence of significant economies of scale with respect to the provision of extension services but no evidence of significant economies of scope between the provision of extension...

Higher Education, Research and Extension Systems in the United States and Chinese Taipei Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute
Po-Yung Lai.
[[abstract]]The higher education systems in both the United States and Chinese Taipei function similarly in teaching, research and extension. The higher education system offers not only baccalaureate degree but also post graduate Master¡¦s and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The land-grant system in the United States was created in 1862 for research in the experiment stations under the Morrill Act and in 1914 for the extension service under the Smith-Lever Act. Agriculture-related research in Chinese Taipei is carried out by Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute, District Agricultural Research and Extension Stations, and academic and private institutions. The extension service in Chinese Taipei, however, is primarily provided by District Agricultural...

Identifying Student Success at a Land Grant Institution AgEcon
Holmgren, Mark; McCracken, Vicki A..
Many higher education institutions use admission criteria to match students with the educational requirements of the institution, thereby increasing the level of success of their students and allocating limited enrollment space in some cases. This study uses two different approaches to identify the affect students’ background characteristics have on first year cumulative GPA, and whether differences exist in the impact of high school grades on success in their first year in college between high schools in the state of Washington. Results show that students’ particular high schools systematically perform better or worse than the model predicts, holding the other characteristics of the students constant including their high school GPA. This suggests the...

Kovacs, Janos.
A társadalom helyzete gazdasági teljesítőképességén nyugszik. Ezért olyan érdekrendszer szükséges, amely minden szinten – állami irányítás, intézmény, egyén, gazdasági, társadalmi szervezetek stb. – megkívánja a konstruktív hozzáállást.

PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION AgEcon
Keczer, Gabriella.
There are several methods of performance assessment used by corporations that can be applied in higher education institutions as well. One Hungarian and one foreign example show that it is an effective way of forming a solid basis for fair renumeration and thus for motivating employees. On a long run it would be inevitably necessary for making Hungarian higher education more competitive.

The knowledge-based, competitive economy places a great emphasis on the education system. The responsibility of higher education is to impart knowledge of high standard which is in harmony with the continuously changing environment. Higher education has a special role in the knowledge-based economy since it does not only have to fulfill educational but also research an innovation tasks. The decrease in the traditional role of agriculture as well as international tendencies facilitate diversification, i.e. the emergence of new roles and the relevant activities.
