Abstract Honey, produced by honeybees from nectar in flowers and plants, is an aqueous supersaturated sugar solution, mainly composed of fructose and glucose. The quality and biochemical properties of honey are related to honey maturity, production methods, processing and storage conditions, climatic conditions as well as the nectar source of the honey. In this study, 35 honey samples of different sizes and packaging all of which were sold in Istanbul were examined in terms of some physicochemical and microbiological properties. All samples were floral liquid honey. The physicochemical characterizations were as follows: average moisture (16.31±1.40%), ash (0.30±0.29%), hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) (8.09±7.63 mg/kg), pH (4.32±0.34), acidity (30±9 meq/kg). In... |

The Mexican honey industry is composed by around of 40,000 honey producers with 2 million of beehives. It has been the result that Mexico is the fourth producer and exporter in the world. In the year 2004, Delicias had 14,115 beehives which produced 443.3 tons of honey with a value of 14.8 millions of Mexican pesos. The honey producers have been collected individually and rustic their honey. It has caused that intermediaries joint the honey and sell mainly to the United States marketing. A marketing research was conducted in which 150 questionnaires were applied to a same families, after this a data base was done by using the SPSS version12. 0. As a result, the regional market demand calculated by the year 2011 was 167,397 liters of honey. The bottle... |

The study researched the costs and returns on typical small beekeeping farms from five districts in Serbia. On the basis of the field research, data on the number of beehives, type of product, volume of production per beehive and values per measurement unit were collected. In order to demonstrate the competitiveness of various agricultural products, analysis of the available data was performed using analytical calculations. According to the analysis, the labour costs comprise about 49.65%to 64.15%of the variable costs on beekeeping farms in the Raška and Šumadija districts, respectively. Production is most economical on the bee farm in the district of Srem, where every dinar spent in production creates a value of 2.22 dinars, while the farm from the... |

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential of honey, propolis, and bee pollen for the reversal of lipid peroxidation induced by tebuconazole (TEB) in South American catfish (Rhamdia quelen), in which the concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), the activity of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and the concentrations of non-enzymatic antioxidants, reduced glutathione (GSH), ascorbic acid, and non-protein thiols were assessed. Honey (0.125 g L-1) and bee pollen (0.05 g L-1) added to the water reverse the production of TBARS induced by TEB, while propolis demonstrated a pro-oxidant effect, inducing an increase in TBARS production. The data presented herein suggest that the addition of water to honey and... |

The territory of the Brazilian semiarid region has historically been the scene of great challenges and adversities, with the capacity for survival and resistance of the people living in it being represented. Within this same territory, there are also several potentialities that should be studied, developed and encouraged, one of which is the bee honey production chain with Apísmellífera type stingers for economic purposes, also known as European bee, which must be worked towards complementing income, as well as the diversification of the subsistence activity of the populations of these territories. The study in question intends to compare the honey production chain in two regions of the Semi-Arid Region of the Northeast. The first chain is located on the... |

There are some medications and procedures that can be used to accelerate the healing of skin wounds. Some studies have demonstrated improvement of burn wound healing with honey treatment. In other hand, based on traditional medicine have improved wound healing with animal oil. This study was done to compare the efficacy of animal oil and honey in accelerating healing of full thickness wound of skin in mice. In this experimental study 36 male NMRI mice were subjected to full-thickness skin wounds under general anesthesia. Animals were randomly allocated to receive either single daily applications of placebo, animal oil and honey (n=12 for each group) respectively. On 4th, 7th and 10th days, four mice from each group were sacrificed using an overdose of... |

Thirty-five natural honey samples from three apicultural regions of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, were collected from honeybee hives under various climatic conditions over a two-year period. The beehives were located in the districts of Bom Jesus do Amparo, Barão de Cocais and São Gonçalo do Rio Abaixo, all within a 100 km radius of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The pollinic spectrum, color and ash, moisture, K, Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn contents were determined. Elemental analysis were done by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Accuracy and precision were verified by recovery tests and relative standard deviation, respectively. The mean mineral contents encountered were K = 1130; Mn = 3.88; Fe = 2.79; Zn = 2.34 and Cu = 0.54 µ g/g. During the dry... |

Abstract: One of the major factors affecting honey quality is the method adopted in its extraction from the honeycomb. Most developing countries, particularly African countries lack appropriate equipment for honey extraction and this affects their honey export potential. This research aims to fabricate honey extractor using locally available materials. The study is conducted from design to fabrication and experiment to determine the performance evaluation of a honey extractor in comparison with the traditionally extracted method. The physiochemical properties of the extracted honey are determined to ascertain its quality against an international standard. The volume of the extraction chamber is 55,125 cm3 and has an extraction rate and efficiency of 69.0... |
