Candida glabrata among Candida spp. from environmental health practitioners of a Brazilian Hospital BJM
Savastano,Catarina; Silva,Elisa de Oliveira; Gonçalves,Lindyanne Lemos; Nery,Jéssica Maria; Silva,Naiara Chaves; Dias,Amanda Latercia Tranches.
Abstract The incidence of the species Candida albicans and non-albicans Candida was evaluated in a Brazilian Tertiary Hospital from the environment and health practitioners. In a 12-month period we had a total positivity of 19.65% of Candida spp. The most recurring non-albicans Candida species was C. glabrata (37.62%), generally considered a species of low virulence, but with a higher mortality rate than C. albicans. Subsequently, C. parapsilosis (25.74%) and C. tropicalis (16.86%) were the second and third most commonly isolated species. Considering the total samples collected from the emergency room and from the inpatient and the pediatric sector, 19.10% were positive for Candida spp., with the predominance of non-albicans Candida species (89.42%). The...

Conjunctival microbial flora of clinically normal persons who work in a hospital environment BJM
Trindade,Rita de Cássia; Bonfim,Ana Cristina Rocha; Resende,Maria Aparecida.
The objective of the work was to study the microbiota of the conjunctival secretion of health professionals. Samples were collected from the clinically normal eyes of 40 health professionals in four different sectors, Proctology, General Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Male Ward, and Oncology of Hospital das Clínicas Dr. Augusto Leite, Aracaju, SE, Brazil. Ten professionals from each sector were selected. The samples were inoculated into various culture media: blood agar, Chapman agar, EMB medium (Teague), and Sabouraud dextrose agar with chloramphenicol. The bacteria most frequently isolated from all the sectors were Staphylococcus epidermidis (45.0%) and Bacillus sp (29.0%). The least frequent bacteria were Proteus sp (6.1%), Staphylococcus aureus (4.1%),...

Multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii clones persist on hospital inanimate surfaces BJID
Rocha,Igor Vasconcelos; Xavier,Danilo Elias; Almeida,Karoline Rissele Henrique de; Oliveira,Sibele Ribeiro de; Leal,Nilma Cintra.
ABSTRACT Acinetobacter baumannii is one of the most frequent Gram-negative opportunistic pathogens associated with hospital-acquired infection worldwide. We briefly describe A. baumannii isolates that were recovered from surrounding ICU bed surfaces, exhibiting multidrug resistance phenotype and belonging to some widely spread clonal complexes of clinical A. baumannii isolates.
