The study aims to discriminate juvenile and adult concentration areas of white croacker Micropogonias furnieri and striped weakfish Cynoscion striatus in two different areas: Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) and El Rincón (Buenos Aires Prov., Argentina). The length structure and the relative abundance of these two species were analyzed with data from a research cruise carried out by R/V Dr.E.L.Holmberg during November 1994. Data of relative abundance in t/nm2 were considered to define distribution and concentration areas. 49 samples of white croaker and 41 striped weakfish from AUCFZ a, inside the area of Río de la Plata and in front of Montevideo coast, at depths lesser than 8 meters, while the adults were located in the northern coast of... |

Whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri fishery during three intensive fishing seasons in the outer area of the La Plata River (Argentina-Uruguay) is analyzed. Resource exploitation in the South Atlantic area shows a general retraction of the distribution range and an isolation of the La Plata River stock where most of the fishing effort concentrates. The species market evolution brought about, for Argentina and Uruguay, an important shift in its dynamics as of 1992, when the product insertion in Asiatic markets generated an important commercial attraction and a subsequent increase in the fishing effort by the argentine inshore coastal fleet. This caused a change in the fishery development in Argentina and the establishment, in winter, of a fleet... |

This chapter includes an economic analysis of the small scale fleet of the Mar del Plata harbour, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The original study was carried out at the request of the Skippers Fisheries Society to find out the relative efficacy and efficiency of homogeneous groups of associated vessels. Based on the information available, to tune the observed data, assess the relative efficacy and estimate the relative economic efficiency of the fleet, an ad hoc model was designed. Length, gross registered tonnage, engine power and number of crew members were considered and analyzed as structural variables for 1995, 1996 and 1997. No changes in variables for the period were observed so, the efficacy and efficiency analysis was carried out for the year... |

Argentine black drum distributes mainly in shallow waters associated to estuarine areas, particularly to Samborombon Bay where it may be detected throughout the year. Nevertheless, it can also be spotted more southwards (40°S) and at deeper waters. During summer, catches of the species in Samborombon Bay are practically negligible, probably due to movements towards shallow waters out of reach of the inshore commercial fleet. Landings increase in autumn and show peak values in winter, coinciding with the fishing season of whitemouth croaker, Micropogonias furnieri, whose geographical distribution within the bay overlaps that of black drum. As of 1995, landings of black drum showed increasing trends both in Argentina and Uruguay. These increments coincide... |

Whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri)has a broad distribution along the Atlantic coast of the Americas, from Mexico to the south of the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. At the southern end of distribution, Argentina and Uruguay catch the species with different commercial fleet types bay or creek, coastal and off-shore and modalities of bottom trawling with doors and paired trawling. Maximum catches of both countries, that reached 60,000 t, were registered between 1995 and 1997. After that period a remarkable decrease was observed, specially in Argentina where catches remained at around 6,000 t over a total of 30,000 t for both countries. The commercial fleet was divided in three categories and the total area of study in three subareas: El Salado,... |
