Ha sido demostrado, por otros autores, que el alga Ulva fasciata Delile posee una actividad antioxidante promisoria y en el presente trabajo evaluamos si la actividad antioxidante de muestras de esta alga puede ser influenciada por la adsorción de metales, pesados y otros por parte del alga. The Almendares River constitutes the most important superficial stream in Cuban capital, that finishes in the Metropolitan Park of Havana, which is an entertaining centre. The objective of this work is to determine the presence of toxic inorganic pollutants in the Almendares River water. 10 samplings were carried out from June 2003 to May 2004 in 14 stations established along the last 10 km of the river and 3 tributaries. Assessment of heavy metals and nonessential content of some edible and soft tissues OceanDocs

The level concentrations of heavy metals (essential and nonessential) were measured in different marine biota including cephalopoda, bivalve, crustacean and fish. The results reveal that these organisms show more or less the same order of distribution for each of the metals studied. The average concentrations of heavy metals exhibited the following decreasing order: cephalopoda > bivalve > crustacean > fish. The levels of metals in all studied samples are still comparable to those in their corresponding in the Mediterranean Sea. م إنجاز هذه الدراسة لهدف عَزَلَ بَكْتِيريَا قادرة على استعمالتم إنجاز هذه الدراسة لهدف عَزَلَ بَكْتِيريَا قادرة على استعمال الهيدروكربنات و مقاومة للمعادن والمضادات الحيوية و في هذا الإطار تم أخذ عينات من الماء و التربة على مستوى 16محطة موزعة ببحيرة بنزرت. كما تم عزل البكتيريا بطريقة الإثراء باستعمال وسط مائي معدني زائد هيدروكربنات (fluoranthène) وقد توصلنا في عملية أولية من عزل 130 من الأجذال المختلفة من البكتيريا والتي تم تعريفها عبر الخاصيات الشكلية و البيوكيميائية. وأثبتت النتائج الأولية أن البكتيريا القادرة على استعمال الهيدروكربنات تنتمي لمجموعات مختلفةGram – و Gram+ على التَّوَالِي بنسبتي 65% و 35 %. وتضم مجموعة البكتيريا من نوع العصيات Gram – أكبر عدد من الأجذال المعزولة (74 %). ختاما نشير أن دراسة قدرة الأجذال على مقاومة المعادن...

The obtained results of the determination of Cu, Co, Cr and Pb in silts of the estuaries and rivers Agabama, Zaza and Jatibonico of the South are discussed and compared. Para determinar los contenidos de cadmio, cobre, zinc y plomo en hojas, tallos y raíces de Rhizophora mangle se tomaron muestras en tres parcelas ubicadas en la desembocadura del río Sevilla-Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, en octubre de 2003. Las mediciones de las concentraciones de metales, se hicieron mediante la técnica de espectrometría de emisión atómica de plasma inductivamente acoplado (ICP-AES). The determination limit is defined as the minimum concentration of a substance in a sample that can be distinguished from the background with a given probability, using a particular analytical method. It is assumed that the concept of detention can be used satisfactorily to quality an analytical method. Some criteria which are necessary for intercalibration purpose are given in this paper. An algebraic method to calculate the detection limit easily and with minimum experimental work was developed. A method to determine the number of repetitions needed when the levels of the analyzed substance are near or under the detection limit of the method is also shown.

Of great importance to our country economy in the coastal zone running along the Gulf of Guacanayabo because of the different species nurseries having commercial interest. Studies on Al, Pb, Zn, and Cu contents within the surface sediments along 210 km of coastal areas, where 42 stations were located are carried out in the work. Results obtained are used for distribution analysis of elements within the zone and their relationships with the domestic and industrial population groups.

Con el propósito de evaluar la distribución vertical de metales pesados Pb, Cd y Zn en el sedimento asociado a las plantas de Rhizophora mangle, se determinaron las concentraciones potencialmente biodisponibles y no biodisponibles, en tres perfiles de sedimento colectados en el río Sevilla, Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta. Las mediciones se hicieron con la técnica de espectrometría de emisión atómica de plasma inductivamente acoplado. Los resultados mostraron que en el ecosistema de manglar del río Sevilla estos metales se acumulan principalmente en formas no biodisponibles, lo cual indica que la mayor parte de estos elementos se encuentran retenidos en el sedimento. Samples of seventeen different tissues of one specimen of the bottlenose dolphin Tursiops gephyreus, caught accidentally in waters adjacent to Mar del Plata by local fishermen (38°00'S; 57°20'W), were analyzed for total mercury distribution. The analytical procedure employed for total mercury involved a wet acid digestion followed by flameless atomic absorption. The method was based essentially on the one proposed by Armstrong and Uthe (1971).

Fish and shellfish samples for total mercury analysis were provided by the local fish export industry. Data collected through the years 1981-83 are processed and information was obtained on actual total mercury values in edible muscle of sampled species. On the basis of these results, future trends in mercury concentration values are hoped to be predicted. The authors suggest a revision of standards in force at present and the proposal of new ones, taking into account species involved and size of specimens.

Twelve samples were collected from the surface sediments of lagoon and adjacent Mediterranean Sea. Samples were analyzed for grain size, total organic carbon (TOC), total carbonate (CaCO3), various forms of phosphorus and heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Cd and Pb). The results indicated that the sediments were composed of sand, silt and clay enriched with carbonate (1.95 – 34.1%) and total organic carbon (0.06 and 3.62%). The total-P content ranged between 58 and 1186 μg/g, and the fraction associated with apatite minerals (PHCl) was the dominant (it constitutes about 50 – 73% of TP) implying that it was the main storage of phosphate. Dans l’environnement marin, les éléments traces peuvent s’accumuler dans les organismes à des concentrations supérieures à celles présentes dans l’eau. L’étude de la distribution tissulaire des métaux traces au niveau des organismes qui y sont exposés, constitue un aspect très important pour la compréhension de leur devenir. En outre, le suivi de la réponse biologique spécifique de ces organismes sentinelles aux xénobiotiques complète et consolide l’analyse chimique. Algae have been used as bioindicators by having several advantages such as they have short life cycles, they can take up nutrients directly from water, they are generally easy to collect in sufficient amounts from various habitats; and they readily accumulate compounds present in seawater, making tissue analyses reliable indicators of water quality. In order to evaluate the bioremoval capability of the green alga Rhizoclonium riparium, the photosynthetic responses to heavy metal pollution under different sublethal concentrations of copper was assessed. Photosynthetic rates were significantly low (p <0.05) at low copper concentrations, between (0.01 y 10 mg/l). Heavy metals distribution of soils around mining sites of cadmium-rich marine sedimentary phosphorites of Kpogamé and Hahotoé (Southern Togo) OceanDocs

Metal concentrations of 37 soil samples taken from mining areas (abandoned mine pits and transport routes) in Kpogamé and Hahotoé (southern Togo) range from 0.2-43 ppm for Cd, 15-115 ppm for Pb, 182-1,029 ppm for Cr, 18-356 ppm for Cu, 15-342 pm for Ni, 90-513 ppm for V, 35-536 ppm for Zn, 80-469 ppm for Zr and 266-3,161 ppm for Sr. The tropical alteration of the ore waste plays an important role in the distribution of trace elements in the studied soils. Impacto de los metales contaminantes en la calidad de la tilapia ( oreocromis aureus) cultivada en Cuba OceanDocs

Se evaluó el impacto producido por los metales traza sobre ecosistemas acuáticos dedicados al cultivo de peces para la alimentación de la población, a través de la realización de estudios de determinación de los niveles de Pb; Cd; Hg; Fe; Cu; y Zn en el agua, sedimento y tilapias de tres presas de interés comercial para el país; dos situadas en la Ciudad de la Habana (Paso Seco y Niña Bonita) y una en Villa Clara (Palmarito). Los resultados obtenidos mostraron niveles de Pb en agua y de Hg, Pb y Cd en el sedimento de las presas que denotaron contaminación de origen antropogénico, lo que trajo como consecuencia que las tilapias cultivadas presentaran en muchos casos niveles de metales traza tóxicos por encima de los límites máximos permisibles en las normas...
