The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics, dimensions, materials used in the fishing gear and boats currently used by the artisanal fisheries along the ecuadorian coast. Three provinces were visited (Guayas, Manabí and Esmeraldas), in which the artisanal ports with the greatest fishing effort and landings along the coast are registered. Interviews with the fishermen, identification of the fishing gear and certain measurements were taken to obtain the information on the desing, dimensions and materials used in the fishing gear as well as the techniques and principal fishing zones. Aditionally the diversity of the fishing boats was noted varying from small sailing rafts to the fast-glass boats with outboard engines. |

Experimental fishing operations with driftnets were conducted in Lagos coastal waters with a view to finding out appropriate gear for effective exploitation of sharks and other pelagic fish species that are not normally caught in trawls. The design and fabrication of the driftnet as well as the fishing trails were undertaken b/w May 1977 and April 1978. Nine driftnets of equal panels have three different streched mesh sizes of 190.5mm, 228.3mm respectively. Six of the driftnets were baited while three were unbaited. Analyses were carried out on species composition of catches by weight and number, catch efficiency of the driftnet as well as the operating cost and financial returns. |

This document, which is directed at the fishing sector, researchers, conservationists and fishery administrators, was developed by researchers who are members of the Specialists Group for Marine Turtle Research and conservation in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (SWA) in response to the urgent need to evaluate the impact generated on sea turtles by fisheries. Historically, sea turtle conservation efforts have focused almost exclusively on the protection of nesting beaches. Nevertheless, over the last decade, research has proved incidental mortality as a result of fishing activities to be one of the greatest threats to these animals. This type of interaction is not only problematic for turtles, but also generates financial losses for fishermen and... |
