This study investigated age and growth of Otolithes ruber, found in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The specimens were collected from prawn trawlers that operate off the shallow water Tugela Bank and from a recreational boat fishery in Durban. Estimates of age and growth parameters were based on the examination of sectioned sagittal otoliths. There was difficulty in estimating growth parameters for separate sexes because the small fish were not sexed and the numbers of males was low. Periodicity of growth zone formation was assumed to be annual although periodicity of growth zone deposition could not be established by marginal zone analysis. The von Bertalanffy growth curve was used to describe the combined male and female growth of O. ruber: Lt = 419mm TL... |

Information resulting from four spring acoustic surveys carried out between 1993 - 1996 to assess bonaerensis anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) biomass (34°- 41°30´S) is presented. Annual estimates, successively higher, went from 1.5 to 5.3 millon tons and the respective coefficient of variability that followed the same trend ranged between 7.4. and 28.0. . In general terms, the largest abundances were those recorded within the coastal strata off the Río de la Plata followed by those of the most southern stratum. Nevertheless, during the 1996 survey, the latter showed very high biomass values and, consequently, the largest mean. The region corresponding to the main commercial anchovy fishing ground during the season represented, in any case, relatively low... |

An update of the knowledge on the three most important ommastrephid species that inhabit the SW Atlantic: Illex argentinus, Martialia hyadesi and Ommastrephes bartramii, is presented. Up to the moment, only I.argentinus was intensively studied. Its distribution, population structure, reproduction, growth and paralarval development are analyzed, togheter with other aspects of its biology, such as feeding, predators and parasites. Also its utilization for human consmption is considered. Regarding M.hyadesi and O.bartrami, information on their distribution and biology is presented. |

An experimental culture trial of juveniles of mutton snapper Lutjanus analis was conducted in order to evaluate the growth potential of the species and its adaptability to culture conditions. The juveniles (N = 127) with an initial weight ranging between 125 and 178 g were held at a stocking density of 15.9 fish/m3 in a floating cage and fed on a commercial artificial diet of 45% protein for a period of 1 to 8 days. Results showed an individual daily weight increase of 3.16 g/ day and a specific growth rate of t .06 %/ day. Although, the food conversion ratio obtained with the artificial diet was high and inadequate (TCA = 3.53). During the culture period all fish showed great tolerance to handling stress and to water quality conditions in the cage (O2 =... |

An experimental culture trial of wild juveniles of jewfish Epinephelus itajara was conducted in two different places in the north coast of Colombia in order to evaluate the growth rate of the species and its tolerance to captivity conditions. Two different groups of fish were evaluated in each place, one fed on an artificial diet and the other on trash fish. All fish were held in floating cages for periods ranging from 63 to 89 days. Results showed excellent individual daily weight increase (6,83 and 12,4 g/day) and specific growth rate (1,4 y 0,96 %/day) for fish fed on trash fish in both places but conversion ratio was too high and inadequate (9,01 and 9,97). Trials with the artificial diet gave negative results because the fish didn’t accept the pellets... |
