A preliminary investigation of age and growth of Otolithes ruber from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa OceanDocs
Fennessy, S.T.; Brash, J.M..
This study investigated age and growth of Otolithes ruber, found in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The specimens were collected from prawn trawlers that operate off the shallow water Tugela Bank and from a recreational boat fishery in Durban. Estimates of age and growth parameters were based on the examination of sectioned sagittal otoliths. There was difficulty in estimating growth parameters for separate sexes because the small fish were not sexed and the numbers of males was low. Periodicity of growth zone formation was assumed to be annual although periodicity of growth zone deposition could not be established by marginal zone analysis. The von Bertalanffy growth curve was used to describe the combined male and female growth of O. ruber: Lt = 419mm TL...

Dia, M.; Ghorbel, M.; Kone, Y.; Bouaîn, A..

Fezzani Serbaji, S.; Chemmam-A, B.; Ben Salem, M..

OceanDocs
Hansen, J.E.; Madirolas, A..
Information resulting from four spring acoustic surveys carried out between 1993 - 1996 to assess bonaerensis anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) biomass (34°- 41°30´S) is presented. Annual estimates, successively higher, went from 1.5 to 5.3 millon tons and the respective coefficient of variability that followed the same trend ranged between 7.4. and 28.0. . In general terms, the largest abundances were those recorded within the coastal strata off the Río de la Plata followed by those of the most southern stratum. Nevertheless, during the 1996 survey, the latter showed very high biomass values and, consequently, the largest mean. The region corresponding to the main commercial anchovy fishing ground during the season represented, in any case, relatively low...

Perrotta, R.G..
Mackerel from SW Atlantic (22° -39°S) and the coast of Cataluña (42° 30'N) were compared by analizing both morphometric and meristic characters. A multivariate analysis, i.e. principal components was used. The growth curves corresponding to mackerels from different regions (Canarias, North of Chile, Mar del Plata and Rincón in Argentine) were also compared, as well as the mean length at ages 1 and 2 (Mar del Plata- Cataluña, Rincón- Cataluña). Significant differences in the growth were found between two groups. The first group was integrated by three SW Atlantic population (Brasil, Mar del Plata, Rincón), which possible conform a subspecies of Scomber japonicus. The second one was represented by the coastal mackerel off Cataluña.

OceanDocs
Hansen, J.E..
Two pelagic cruises were carried out by R/V"Cap.Oca Balda" in the spring of 1988 and the following summer. Anchovy samples were taken in order to increase the knowledge on the differences between two main stocks of the species, inhabiting the Argentine Sea from 35°S southwards, with distributional boundary situated at about 41°S. Length-weight relationships were statistically different among populations. Weight-at-length values calculated for the summer cruise were higher tha sprin estimates, and they were also higher within Northern individuals. The differences were not statistically significant between stocks, but there are reasons to believe that if ages 1 and 6 of both stocks had been represented those differences would have been increased. Mortality...
