Abstract Background Snakebite incidence in southwestern China is mainly attributed to one of the several venomous snakes found in the country, the white-lipped green pit viper Trimeresurus albolabris. Since antivenom produced from horses may cause numerous clinical side effects, the present study was conducted aiming to develop an alternative antivenom antibody (immunoglobulin Y - IgY) from leghorn chickens. Methods IgY in egg yolk from white leghorn chicken previously injected with T. albolabris venom was extracted by water, precipitated by ammonium sulfate and purified by affinity chromatographic system. IgY was identified by SDS-PAGE, ELISA and Western blot, and its neutralizing assay was conducted on mice. Results Chickens injected multiple times...

Effect of inoculation route on the production of antibodies and histological characteristics of the spleen in laying hens Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Eto,SF; Andrade,FG; Pinheiro,JW; Balarin,MR; Ramos,SP; Venancio,EJ.
Recent studies have reported the use of IgY antibody in the prevention or treatment of diseases in animals. IgY can be obtained in large amounts from the yolk of chicken eggs through a low-cost process. This study evaluated the effect of different routes of inoculation on antibody production and spleen morphological characteristics of laying hens (White Leghorn) inoculated with sheep red blood cells. The analysis of the results showed that the intramuscular route is the most efficient for total antibody production in the primary immune response, while the intravenous route is the most efficient in producing IgY antibodies in the secondary immune response. No histological changes were observed in the spleen of laying hens. This study could be useful for...

Immunomodulatory action of jacalin from Artocarpus integrifolia and mannoprotein from Saccharomyces uvarum on the humoral immunity of laying hens Ciência Rural
Silva,Marco Aurélio Chiara; Silva,Miriele Caroline da; Pinheiro,João Waine; Castro-Goméz,Raul Jorge Hernan; Murakami,Alice Eiko; Loyola,Wagner; Venancio,Emerson José.
ABSTRACT: Advances in the fields of glycobiology and immunology have provided many insights into the role of carbohydrate-protein interactions in the immune system. Jacalin of Artocarpus integrifolia (JCA) and structural mannoprotein of Saccharomyces uvarum (MPS) are molecules with immunomodulatory properties. JCA is an IgA human lectin binding molecule that causes the mitogenic stimulation of immune cells, production of cytokines, chemotaxis, and activation of leukocytes. Studies on the immunomodulatory properties of JCA and MPS in mammals and fish suggest that they have an action on antibody production. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible action of JCA and MPS on the production of specific antibodies in laying hens. For this, laying...

Production and characterization of chicken IgY for detecting wheat stripe mosaic virus. Repositório Alice
SILVA, G. F. da; SANTOS, A. K. A.; ECHEVERRI, L. M. S.; SOUSA, B. A. de; VICENTE, M. C. de; NASCIMENTO, S. C. do; SILVA, F. N. da; BOGO, A.; LAU, D.; FERREIRA JÚNIOR, A..
Abstract: In Brazil, wheat (Triticum aestivum) is cultivated mainly in the southern part. The soilborne wheat mosaic disease (SBWMD), caused by the wheat stripe mosaic virus (WhSMV), is one of the most important viruses in the region. Its diagnosis is based mainly on symptoms since molecular techniques are expensive, especially for RNA genomes viruses. However, serological tests using IgY immunoglobulins are highly efective in identifying viruses. This study aimed to produce and characterize a polyclonal antibody capable of interacting with the WhSMV capsid protein. The gene encoding the virus capsid protein was inserted into the expression vector pET-15b; the transformation and expression occurred in Escherichia coli BL21::DE3 in vitro. The recombinant...

Welfare indicators for laying Japanese quails caged at different densities Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOARES,DANIELA F.; PIZZOLANTE,CARLA C.; DUARTE,KEILA MARIA R.; MORAES,JOSÉ EVANDRO DE; BUDIÑO,FÁBIO E.L.; SOARES,WEBER V.B.; KAKIMOTO,SÉRGIO K..
Abstract In the way to reduce costs in the poultry production, high densities of birds are adopted in the production systems. Such high densities can lead to an inappropriate environment, compromising the welfare and decreasing the animal performance. In this work we aimed to evaluate the effects of different densities on the productive yield, egg quality and immunological aspects of Japanese quails. It was used 816 Japanese quails, during egg production phase, in a random design, with four treatments (121.43 cm2/bird; 106.25 cm2/bird; 94.44 cm2/bird and 85.00 cm2/bird) with six repetitions each. Results indicate density did not interfere on egg quality and all treatments can be considered excellent, once the Haugh Unit was 88.03. Therefore, higher...
