A NOVEL RAISIN SEGMENTATION ALGORITHM BASED ON DEEP LEARNING AND MORPHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS 70
Zhao,Yun; Guindo,Mahamed L.; Xu,Xing; Shi,Xiang; Sun,Miao; He,Yong.
ABSTRACT We propose a segmentation algorithm for raisin extraction. The proposed approach consists of the following aspects. Deep learning is used to predict the number of raisins in each connected region, and the shape features such as the roundness, area, X-axis value for the centroid, Y-axis value for the centroid, axis length and perimeter of each region will be used to establish the prediction model. Morphological analysis, based on edge parameters including the polar axis, polar angle and angular velocity, is applied to search for the suitable break points that are useful for identifying the dividing lines between two adjacent raisins. To make our segmentation more accurate, some machine-learning algorithms such as the random forest (RF), support...

A short review: Comparisons of high-throughput phenotyping methods for detecting drought tolerance 63
Kim,Jaeyoung; Kim,Ki-Seung; Kim,Yoonha; Chung,Yong Suk.
ABSTRACT Drought is a major threat worldwide for crop production, especially due to the rapid climate changes. Current drought solutions involve improving irrigation system, rainwater harvesting, damming, cloud seeding, and changes of cultivation methods. Despite effective, each solution has economic, environmental, and temporal drawbacks. Among all solutions, the most effective, inexpensive and manageable method is the use of drought-tolerant cultivars via plant breeding. However, conventional plant breeding is a time-consuming and laborious task, especially for phenotypic data acquisition of target traits of numerous progenies. High-throughput phenotyping (HTP) is a recently developed method and has potential to overcome the mentioned issues. HTP offers...

Age estimation in common sole Solea solea larvae: validation of daily increments and evaluation of a pattern recognition technique 5
Lagardere, Françoise; Troadec, Herve.
Close similarities have been found between the otoliths of sea-caught and laboratory-reared larvae of the common sole Solea solea (L.), given appropriate temperatures and nourishment of the latter. But from hatching to mouth formation. and during metamorphosis, sole otoliths have proven difficult to read because the increments may be less regular and low contrast. In this study, the growth increments in otoliths of larvae reared at 12 degrees C were counted by light microscopy to test the hypothesis of daily deposition, with some results verified using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and by image analysis in order to compare the reliability of the 2 methods in age estimation. Age was first estimated (in days posthatch) from light micrographs of whole...

Analysis of trophic responses in lesioned brain: focus on basic fibroblast growth factor mechanisms 56
Chadi,G.; Fuxe,K..
The actions of fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), particularly the basic form (bFGF), have been described in a large number of cells and include mitogenicity, angiogenicity and wound repair. The present review discusses the presence of the bFGF protein and messenger RNA as well as the presence of the FGF receptor messenger RNA in the rodent brain by means of semiquantitative radioactive in situ hybridization in combination with immunohistochemistry. Chemical and mechanical injuries to the brain trigger a reduction in neurotransmitter synthesis and neuronal death which are accompanied by astroglial reaction. The altered synthesis of bFGF following brain lesions or stimulation was analyzed. Lesions of the central nervous system trigger bFGF gene expression by...

Application of a digital pattern recognition system to Dinophysis acuminata and D-sacculus complexes 5
Truquet, Philippe; Lassus, Patrick; Honsell, Giorgio; Le Dean, Loic.
An image discrimination technique was developed to improve specific identification of some toxic Dinophysis cells (marine dinoflagellates involved in diarrhoeic shellfish poisoning), especially the ''acuminata'' and ''sacculus'' groups, which can be present at different ratios in natural sea-water samples collected during toxic episodes. This work was performed with image analysis software SAMBA (TITN Alcatel) using preserved cells directly observed through an inverted microscope and recorded with a video camera before further processing. All morphometric parameters used for discrimination of 7 different species or morphotypes of Dinophysis were tested with discriminant analysis. This study indicates that Dinophysis sp. and D. pavillardi seem well...

Applications of image analysis in the characterization of Streptomyces olindensis in submerged culture 58
Pamboukian,Celso R. Denser; Guimarães,Luciana M.; Facciotti,Maria Cândida R..
The morphology of Streptomyces olindensis (producer of retamycin, an antitumor antibiotic) grown in submerged culture was assessed by image analysis. The morphology was differentiated into four classes: pellets, clumps (or entangled filaments), branched and unbranched free filaments. Four morphological parameters were initially considered (area, convex area, perimeter, and convex perimeter) but only two parameters (perimeter and convex perimeter) were chosen to automatically classify the cells into the four morphological classes, using histogram analysis. Each morphological class was evaluated during growth carried out in liquid media in fermenter or shaker. It was found that pellets and clumps dominated in early growth stages in fermenter (due to the...

Assessment of broiler surface temperature variation when exposed to different air temperatures 89
Nascimento,GR; Nääs,IA; Pereira,DF; Baracho,MS; Garcia,R.
This study was conducted to determine the effect of the air temperature variation on the mean surface temperature (MST) of 7- to 35-day-old broiler chickens using infrared thermometry to estimate MST, and to study surface temperature variation of the wings, head, legs, back and comb as affected by air temperature and broiler age. One hundred Cobb® broilers were used in the experiment. Starting on day 7, 10 birds were weekly selected at random, housed in an environmental chamber and reared under three distinct temperatures (18, 25 and 32 ºC) to record their thermal profile using an infrared thermal camera. The recorded images were processed to estimate MST by selecting the whole area of the bird within the picture and comparing it with the values obtained...

Automated image analysis of seedlings for vigor evaluation of common bean seeds 1
Gomes Junior, Francisco Guilhien; Universidade de São Paulo; Chamma, Helena Maria Carmignani Pescarin; Universidade de São Paulo; Cicero, Silvio Moure; Universidade de São Paulo.
Quickly and precise evaluations of the vigor of seeds are highly desirable for the success of quality control programs applied to the seed industry. The objective of this experiment was to determine the number of days necessary to calculate the vigor index of common bean seeds using an automated system of seedling images (SVIS®), and compare its results with the traditional tests of seed vigor. Samples of five seed lots of the IAC Carioca cultivar were submitted to germination, accelerated aging, seedling emergence in sand and electrical conductivity tests. The parameters measured by the Seed Vigor Imaging System (SVIS®) were mean seedling length, growth (ratio of the actual seedling growth to the maximum possible growth), uniformity of growth and the...

Biological characteristics of a hydrothermal edifice mosaic community 5
Sarrazin, Jozee; Juniper, Sk.
This study defines the composition and biomass characteristics of 5 of 6 previously described faunal assemblages that form a mosaic community on hydrothermal sulfide edifices of the Juan de Fuca Ridge (northeast Pacific). Quantitative samples of each assemblage were acquired during 'ROPOS' Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) dive programs in 1994 and 1996. Total abundance, and species richness, as well as wet and dry weights, were calculated for each assemblage, and sampled surface area was measured directly or from scaled images of sample scars. These data were used to compare species composition, richness and biomass of the distinct assemblages and to estimate total biomass of a sulfide edifice. In addition to major compositional differences, we observed an...

Comparison of traditional microscopy and digitized image analysis to identify and delineate pelagic fish egg spatial distribution 5
Lelievre, Stephanie; Antajan, Elvire; Vaz, Sandrine.
One of the problems concerning studies of fish egg distribution is the weak spatial and temporal resolution due to the workload that examination of a large number of samples would demand. Recently, the development of a new laboratory imaging system, the ZooScan, capable of obtaining relatively good resolution images enables automated zooplankton identification using supervised learning algorithms. This new approach was applied to formalin-fixed fish egg samples collected during French winter IBTS (International Bottom Trawl Surveys) in the Eastern English Channel and the Southern North Sea. Fish egg spatial distributions of seven species based on the microscope and ZooScan identifications were compared. Abundance and distribution maps of winter-spawning...

Detection of soybean planted areas through orbital images based on culture spectral dynamics 70
Mercante,Erivelto; Lima,Luiz E. P. de; Justina,Diego D. D.; Uribe-Opazo,Miguel A.; Lamparelli,Rubens A. C..
The soybean is important to the economy of Brazil, so the estimation of the planted area and the production with higher antecedence and reliability becomes essential. Techniques related to Remote Sensing may help to obtain this information at lower cost and less subjectivity in relation to traditional surveys. The aim of this study is to estimate the planted area with soybean culture in the crop of 2008/2009 in cities in the west of the state of Paraná, in Brazil, based on the spectral dynamics of the culture and through the use of the specific system of analysis for images of Landsat 5/TM satellite. The obtained results were satisfactory, because the classification supervised by Maximum Verisimilitude - MaxVer along with the techniques of the specific...

Digital surface area assessment of broiler chickens 70
Yanagi Júnior,Tadayuki; Silva,Éberson; Braga Júnior,Roberto A.; Lopes,Marcos A.; Damasceno,Flávio A.; Silva,Gleice C. de A. E.
Surface area (SA) of poultry is an important parameter for heat and mass transfer calculations. Optical approaches, such as the moiré technique (MT), are non-destructive, result in accuracy and speed gains, and preserve the object integrity. The objective of this research was to develop and validate a new protocol for estimating the surface area (SA) of broiler chickens based on the MT. Sixty-six Ross breed broiler chickens (twenty-seven male, thirty-nine female, ages spanning all growth phases) were used in this study. The dimensions (length, width and height) and body mass of randomly selected broiler chickens were evaluated in the laboratory. Chickens were illuminated by a light source, and grids were projected onto the chickens to allow their shape to...

Digital-image analysis to predict weight and yields of boneless subprimal beef cuts 63
Teira,Gustavo Adolfo; Tinois,Eduardo; Lotufo,Roberto de Alencar; Felício,Pedro Eduardo de.
For several decades, beef carcass evaluation for grading or research purposes has relied upon subjective visual scores, and manually taken measurements, but in recent times there has been a growing interest in new technologies capable of improving accuracy of estimates. Equations to predict weight and yield of beef pistol subprimal cuts were developed in this work using digital image analysis (VIA) of the 12th rib steak. Equations to predict total pistol subprimal cuts weight (CUTS) had coefficients of determination (CD) of 0.84, or 0.87 to 0.88, when the independent variables were the VIA parameters and the half carcass weight (HC) or the total pistol weight (TP), respectively. The predicted values for the total seven subprimal cuts, as a percentage of...
