ABSTRACT: Apple yield estimation using a smartphone with image processing technology offers advantages such as low cost, quick access and simple operation. This article proposes distribution framework consisting of the acquisition of fruit tree images, yield prediction in smarphone client, data processing and model calculation in server client for estimating the potential fruit yield. An image processing method was designed including the core steps of image segmentation with R/B value combined with V value and circle-fitting using curvature analysis. This method enabled four parameters to be obtained, namely, total identified pixel area (TP), fitting circle amount (FC), average radius of the fitting circle (RC) and small polygon pixel area (SP). A... |

This article characterized the forest fragments of Una River hydrographic basin, affluent of the Paraíba do Sul River. Results showed that the average mean size of all fragments is 9.06 ha and that the correlation to the circular shape is 0.68 and the mean nucleus area of fragments considering a border effect of 60m is 5.86 ha. The mean distance among them is 245m. These parameters indicate that this basin has elongated fragments, with high border effect and may be in risk of biodiversity erosion. The image showing the different size classes of fragments allowed spatial observation of critical areas of the basin in ecological sustainability risk. The computing tools proved to be useful and easy to use as long as a previous georeferenced data basis is... |

In this project "space-temporary Analysis of the landscape in the basin Dos Afonsos" was analyzed the patterns of change of use of the soils and the fragmentation of the wood, located in the basin Dos Afonsos, and inside the limits of the Redençao da Serra district that belongs to the Região do Vale do Paraíba-SP state. For it a was carried out an multitemporal analyzed on an area approximated of 6802,59 of hectares, using for that program SPRING, for the image of Landsat processing of the followings years 1984, 1994, 2005 and the images of CBERS of the 2005 years The analysis of detection of changes was made for the followings classes: Lake - Lagoon, Macrophytes, Wood, Grass, degraded Grass, implanted Grass, Burned, reforests and Bare soils. Concluding... |

For monitoring purposes and in the context of geomorphological research, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) appear to be a promising solution to provide multi-temporal Digital Surface Models (DSMs) and orthophotographs. There are a variety of photogrammetric software tools available for UAV-based data. The objective of this study is to investigate the level of accuracy that can be achieved using two of these software tools: Agisoft PhotoScan((R)) Pro and an open-source alternative, IGN((c)) MicMac((R)), in sub-optimal survey conditions (rugged terrain, with a large variety of morphological features covering a range of roughness sizes, poor GPS reception). A set of UAV images has been taken by a hexacopter drone above the Riviere des Remparts, a river on... |

Four sandy beaches on the island of Malta in the Central Mediterranean were regularly sampled for Large MicroPlastic (LMP) particles having a diameter between 1 mm and 5 mm, at stations located at the waterline and 10 m inshore. The 10975 extracted LMP particles were characterised (dimensions, surface roughness, colour) through unaided visual observation, microscopic analyses, and an algorithm developed within the current study. Two-thirds of the isolated particles were smooth and the majority of these belonged to the grey-white colour category, with a low degree of opaqueness and discolouration, and a high degree of transparency, suggesting that these were dominated by low-density polyethylene LMPs. Conflicting evidence concerning the relative residence... |

Abstract The Paraná-Etendeka Magmatic Province is associated with the distensive tectonics that caused the rupture of the Gondwana continent during the Lower Cretaceous and generated an intense volcanism that covers South America and the NW portion of Namibia in Africa. In Brazil, this volcanic sequence is named Serra Geral Group and predominantly consists of basalts and subordinated silicic rocks. The goal of this study is to characterize the geomorphological features observed in the Aparados da Serra region, southern Brazil, and to evaluate the relationship between these structures and the primary silicic volcanic structures. The geomorphological features were first identified using remote sensing and then correlated with flow structures observed in the... |

The purpose of this study was to develop a three-dimensional digital model of a human hand and forearm to apply Computational Fluid Dynamics to propulsion analysis in swimming. Computer tomography scans of the hand and forearm of an Olympic swimmer were applied. The data were converted, using image processing techniques, into relevant coordinate input, which could be used in Computational Fluid Dynamics software. From that analysis, it was possible to verify an almost perfect agreement between the true human segment and the digital model. This technique could be used as a means to overcome the difficulties in developing a true three-dimensional model of a specific segment of the human body. Additionally, it could be used to improve the use of Computational... |

Nowadays, the determination of nutritional deficiencies in plants has become one of the most important analysis of crop growth. Often, this analysis is performed manually by specialized personnel for long period of time, leading to an error in the procedure. The purpose of this research is to develop a computational tool for the identification of nutritional deficiencies such as Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorus in Curuba plants. The methodology includes 3D designs, tool construction and the detection of nutritional deficiencies by image processing techniques in MatLab. Finally, the results obtained by the developed computational tool with respect to the data provided in a traditional way by the technical experts, presented an accuracy of 100%, 80%, 91%... |

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to process digital images to investigate the possibility of broilers body weight estimation based on the dynamic model. For this experiment, 2440 images were recorded by a top-view camera from 30 birds. An ellipse fitting algorithm was applied to localize chickens within the pen, by using a generalized Hough transform. Chickens’ head and tail were removed efficiently using the Chan-Vese method. After that, using image processing, six body measures were calculated. Next, they were used to design a Transform Function (TF) model with weight measurements as output. Second-order dynamic models were used to predict the weight of life broiler chicken, without delay, stable and with the highest R2 were predominantly... |

Lack of accurate information for the drying kinetics is the main barrier to optimize drying processes effectively. Online monitoring of drying data is not common due to practical issues involved in set-up application. In this study an imaging system was developed for large drying units to investigate the quality changes (color kinetics and shrinkage) combine with weight loss of food product spatially and non-destructively during convective drying. The imaging setup was used in a diagonal-airflow batch dryer and shifted along the dryer length to take data (food images and weight loss) at different positions using potato slices (5mm thick, 60°C) as drying material. First order model fitted well to value of ∆L* and ∆b* while ∆a* and ∆E fitted in zero order... |

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to develop a software based on image processing and computer vision techniques for monitoring the feeding/collective behavior of broilers (Cobb) and validate it based on the results obtained from the visual analysis of an expert. The visual analysis was performed based on the observation and quantification of behaviors in the interval of 10 min at each hour of the day, in the period of 24 hours, totaling 1728 frames/day, for males and females. The software was developed using the Hoshen-Kopelman algorithm, for labeling clusters, which would basically be the grouping of similar pixels. This software is written in the 1999 standard of the C language. After this stage of programming, the Hoshen-Kopelman algorithm... |

Due to success of air-jet application in food and agricultural sciences, a new method was invented based on the impingement jets in order to eliminate a number of problems present in mechanical methods of removing sunflower seeds from the head. When the sunflower head had linear velocity and the nozzle was fixed, the effects of the seeds’ location on the sunflower head, reservoir pressure, nozzle diameter, linear velocity of the sunflower head, and the distance between the nozzle outlet and the surface of the sunflower head on its removed area were examined. The regions removed by the impingement of the air-jet were photographed and the area of the removed regions was calculated based on the image processing technique. The results showed that the area of... |
