10 years of transition in Ukraine agriculture: An analysis of productivity and efficiency of enterprises 31
Lissitsa, Alexej; Odening, Martin; Babycheva, Tamara.
This paper analyzes efficiency and total factor productivity (TFP) change of large agricultural enterprises during their transition to a market economy in Ukraine. In this case the efficiency is calculated by data envelopment analysis and the productivity change is measured by the Malmquist Productivity Change Index in the period between 1990 and 1999. On average, TFP declined by 6% annually, dropping a total 42%. The main reason for the observed TFP decline is a decrease in technical efficiency, which is found to be remarkably significant. At the same time there is a high variation among individual enterprises: their distribution of efficiency scores widens, which indicates that the farms diverge with respect to their economic performance. The Tobit...

1998 OUTLOOK OF THE U.S. AND WORLD WHEAT INDUSTRIES 31
Koo, Won W.; Taylor, Richard D..
This report evaluates the U.S. and world wheat markets for the 1997-2007 period by using the World Wheat Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on a series of assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, the weather, and technological change. Both the U.S. and world wheat economies are predicted to be optimistic for the next ten years. World demands for both common and durum wheat are expected to grow faster than world production of the two wheat classes, resulting in gradual increases in prices of the wheats. World trade volumes of both classes of wheat are expected to expand, but trade volume of durum wheat may grow faster than common wheat.

A CADEIA PRODUTIVA DE CAQUI NO MUNICÍPIO DE ANTÔNIO CARLOS SOB A ÓTICA DA ECONOMIA DOS CUSTOS DE TRANSAÇÃO 31
Guerra, Cristina Aparecida; Pereira, Claudia Maria Miranda de Araujo.
This work discusses the importance of the kaki productive chain in the Antônio Carlos district and its growing potentialities, analysed from the perspective of Transaction Costs Economics. The objective is to verify how the transactions between the kaki producers from the Antônio Carlos district and the downstream and upstream agents of the productive chain occur, as well as to study the governance structure in this chain. The data were obtained from semi-structured interviews carried out with seven producers, who were chosen according to criteria such as accessibility and representativity of the district’s production. It was verified that the contracts made between the producers and the downstream industry are classic and the form of governance is the...

A Case Study of China's Commercial Pork Value Chain 31
Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Hu, Dinghuan; Fang, Cheng.
In China, with the cost of improved technology rising, surplus labor shrinking, and demand for food quality and safety increasing, it will be just a matter of time before the country’'s hog production sector will be commercialized like that of developed countries. However, even if China'’s cost of production converges to international levels, as shown in this case study, China may continue to retain some competitive advantage because of the labor-intensive nature of the marketing services involved in hog processing and meat distribution. The supply of variety meats offers the most promising market opportunity for foreign suppliers in China. The market may open further if the tariff rate for variety meats is reduced from 20% and harmonized with the pork...

A certificação orgânica como fator estratégico na governança das transações no mercado de alimentos 31
Cesar, Aldara da Silva; Batalha, Mario Otavio; Pimenta, Marcio Lopes.
Food consumers are, in general, concerned with acquiring healthy food which does not pose risks to their health. These preferences are directly related to the way the economic agents organize themselves inside the food sector. In this context, the organic products’ share in the food market is rising considerably, mainly because they consist not only of a healthier product, but also because they contribute positively to the environment. Nevertheless, these characteristics are not immediately observed by the consumers, which makes the certification process an essential mechanism not in the transaction process but also in gaining the confidence of several markets. This article lists some advantages and disadvantages of the certification process raised in the...

A comment on market structure and the durability of goods 31
Karp, Larry S.; Cosimano, Thomas F..
This paper considers the effect of market structure on the durability of goods. A previous model is analyzed to provide conditions under which a monopolist provides less durable goods and a lower present value of services than the social optimum.

A Comparison of Vertical Coordination in the U.S. Poultry, Egg, and Pork Industries 31
Martinez, Stephen W..
Changes in vertical coordination in the U.S. broiler, turkey, and egg industries decades ago may provide useful insight into more recent developments in the U.S. pork industry. The need to protect relationship- specific investments created incentives for contracts and vertical integration. In the presence of relationship-specific investments, market uncertainty from a number of sources helped determine the type of contract/vertical coordination alternative selected.

A COORDENAÇÃO AGROINDUSTRIAL CITRICOLA BRASILEIRA E OS NOVOS RECURSOS DE PODER: DOS POLITICOS AOS JURIDICOS 31
Paulillo, Luiz Fernando; Almeida, Luiz Manoel de Moraes Camargo.
This work shows that the political and legal resources available to citrus farmers have become as strategic as financial, technological and organizational resources. The study presents an analysis of the Brazilian citrus business governance, which is defined by the use of different strategies among citrus farmers and processing plants: the citrus farmers and their main association use political resources, while some big juice processing plants resort to legal resources. This opposition represents a new obstacle to the achievement of positive results by citrus farmers in the current power network. Court orders demonstrate that orange supply contracts have become a fundamental empowering instrument in the sector, leading to strategic gains for the juice...

A DISCRIMINANT ANALYSIS OF GRAIN MARKET STRUCTURE IN SELECTED STATES OF THE SOUTH AND CORNBELT 31
Baldwin, E. Dean; Thraen, Cameron S.; Larson, Donald W..
Scherer's industrial organization model is modified to characterize the grain marketing system. The modified model identifies the important relationships between economic characteristics and the type of grain facilities found in three states; Alabama, Illinois, and Ohio. Multivariate linear discriminate analysis is used to identify the important basic supply, demand, and transportation variables within and among these states. It is concluded that the structural differences among selected grain marketing regions can be explained by regional differences in basic supply, demand, and transportation variables. The findings suggest that Scherer's industrial organization model can be adapted to explain the diverse structure of the grain marketing system in...

A Dynamic Adoption Model with Bayesian Learning: Application to the U.S. Soybean Market 31
Ma, Xingliang; Shi, Guanming.
Agricultural technology adoption is often a sequential process. Farmers may adopt a new technology in part of their land first and then adjust in later years based on what they learn from the earlier partial adoption. This paper presents a dynamic adoption model with Bayesian learning, in which forward-looking farmers learn from their own experience and from their neighbors about the new technology. The model is compared to that of a myopic model, in which farmers only maximize their current benefits. We apply the analysis to a sample of U.S. soybean farmers from year 2000 to 2004 to examine their adoption pattern of a newly developed genetically modified (GM) seed technology. We show that the myopic model predicts lower adoption rates in early years than...

A dynamic model of oligopoly in the coffee export market 31
Karp, Larry S.; Perloff, Jeffrey M..
A linear-quadratic, dynamic feedback oligopoly model that nests various market structures is used to estimate the degree of competitiveness and the adjustment paths of the two largest coffee exporters, Brazil and Colombia. Their estimated behavior is relatively competitive. This subgame perfect dynamic model is-compared to a standard static oligopoly model and the open-loop model (the dynamic generalization of the standard static model). Both classical and Bayesian tests of open-loop and feedback dynamic models are reported.

A EVOLUÇÃO DA INDÚSTRIA DE AGROTÓXICOS NO BRASIL DE 2001 A 2007: A EXPANSÃO DA AGRICULTURA E AS MODIFICAÇÕES NA LEI DE AGROTÓXICOS 31
Terra, Fabio Henrique Bittes; Pelaez, Victor Manoel.

A FAMILY OF AGRONOMIC PRODUCTION FUNCTIONS WITH ECONOMIES OF SCOPE 31
Lloyd, Peter J..
This paper derives a family of multiple-output multiple-input production functions from the underlying technologies. These technologies are represented by average yield functions for each of the commodities (crops) produced from a common pool of resources. The production functions are implicitly separable. Examples include the CRETH, translog, generalised power and generalised McFadden functions. Moreover, given a function which is a member of this family, the individual commodity yield and production functions can be recovered. Such implicitly separable multiple-output production functions may exhibit economies or diseconomies of scope which reflect the interactions between outputs sharing a common pool of resources.

A FARM LEVEL ANALYSIS OF THE RELATION BETWEEN CAP REFORMS AND LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL LEGISLATIONS: HOW AND IN WHICH EXTENT FLEMISH DAIRY FARMERS CAN FILL UP EXTRA MILK QUOTA? 31
Van der Straeten, Bart; Buysse, Jeroen; Nolte, Stephan; Marchand, Fleur L.; Lauwers, Ludwig H.; Claeys, Dakerlia; Van Huylenbroeck, Guido.
The agricultural policies shift gradually from EU-level organised market interventions to local organised environmental policies. This paper explores the growth possibilities of the Flemish dairy sector with the outlook of a quota abolishment as a case study of this policy shift. The dairy quota policy seems very restrictive for the highly profitable Flemish dairy sector, but the environmental restrictions from the manure regulation can limit the growth of the dairy sector as well. The paper uses a spatial multi-agent simulation model applied to a sample of 40.000 farms to estimate price development of emission rights and their possible impact on the growth of the dairy production. The results show that a higher milk production leads to higher prices for...

A FARM TO RETAIL SECTORAL ANALYSIS OF THE NORTHEAST FOOD INDUSTRY 31
Gempesaw, Conrado M., II; Reisner, G.C.; Wobus, P.J..
Previous studies analyzing the U.S. food industry have used national data and/or have focused on a particular sector of the industry. However, regional differences in resource endowments, income opportunities and population distribution imply that the impact of changing economic environment will not be the same for all regions. A farm to retail multiproduct sectoral model for the Northeast food industry is developed and estimated. This regional approach is used to analyze the effects of changes in exogenous variables on the Northeast region's food production and consumption. Empirical results are presented in terms of intrasectoral flexibilities and elasticities. Selected results from other regions are also presented and compared with the Northeast...
