Activation of group II metabotropic glutamate receptors blocks zinc release from hippocampal mossy fibers Biol. Res.

BACKGROUND: The hippocampal CA3 area contains large amounts of vesicular zinc in the mossy fiber terminals which is released during synaptic activity, depending on presynaptic calcium. Another characteristic of these synapses is the presynaptic localization of high concentrations of group II metabotropic glutamate receptors, specifically activated by DCG-IV. Previous work has shown that DCG-IV affects only mossy fiber-evoked responses but not the signals from associational-commissural afferents, blocking mossy fiber synaptic transmission. Since zinc is released from mossy fibers even for single stimuli and it is generally assumed to be co-released with glutamate, the aim of the work was to investigate the effect of DCG-IV on mossy fiber zinc signals....

Allelopathic potential of bark and leaves of Esenbeckia leiocarpa Engl. (Rutaceae) Acta Botanica

We investigated the inhibitory potential of aqueous extracts of bark and leaves of Esenbeckia leiocarpa Engl. on lettuce germination and early seedling growth. We compared the effects of four concentrations (100, 75, 50 and 25%) of each extract to water and polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) solution controls for four replicates of 50 seeds for germination and four replicates of ten seedlings for seedling growth. ABSTRACT: The recognized allelopathic activity of oats as a soil-cover plant induces the study of the potential of their germplasm. The objective of this study is to verify if there is genotype variability in the Avena spp. with regard to allelopathic activity. This study analyses venom from the elapid krait snake Bungarus sindanus, which contains a high level of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. The enzyme showed optimum activity at alkaline pH (8.5) and 45ºC. Krait venom AChE was inhibited by substrate. Inhibition was significantly reduced by using a high ionic strength buffer; low ionic strength buffer (10 mM PO4 pH 7.5) inhibited the enzyme by 1. 5mM AcSCh, while high ionic strength buffer (62 mM PO4 pH 7.5) inhibited it by 1 mM AcSCh. Venom acetylcholinesterase was also found to be thermally stable at 45ºC; it only lost 5% of its activity after incubation at 45ºC for 40 minutes. The bioprotective potential of Lactococcus piscium CNCM I-4031 towards a specific spoilage organism, Brochothrix thermosphacta, was studied on tropical cooked peeled shrimp packed under modified atmosphere. In co-culture, the growth of this spoilage bacterium was inhibited by 4 log ufc/g by L. piscium and the sensory quality of the product was improved during 31 days. The inhibition could not be attributed to lactic acid or nutritional competition for amino acids. The growth modelling of L. piscium and B. thermosphacta was performed in different conditions of temperature, pH and NaCl concentrations. Hesperidin inhibits the epithelial to mesenchymal transition induced by transforming growth factor-β1 in A549 cells through Smad signaling in the cytoplasm BJPS

Hesperidin, a natural compound, suppresses the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition through the TGF-β1/Smad signaling pathway. However, studies on the detailed effects and mechanisms of hesperidin are rare. The present study showed that, for A549 alveolar epithelial cells, the anti-proliferative effects of hesperidin occurred in a dose-dependent manner, with an IC50= 216.8 µM at 48 h. TGF-β1 was used to activate the Smad signaling pathway and induce the epithelial to mesenchymal transition in cells. Treatment with hesperidin or SB431542 was used for antagonism of Smad pathway activation. "In vitro" effect of fungicides on mycelial growth of bipolaris maydis Sci. Agrar.Paran. / SAP

Leaf spot is a disease provoked by the fungus Bipolaris maydis, that it causes great damages for annual crops, as the corn, the wheat and the  oats. Tests "in vitro" were accomplished seeking to evaluate the efficiency in the inhibition of the mycelial growth of that patogenic fungus through five fungicides: tetraconazol, tebuconazole, azoxystrobin + cyproconazole, trifloxystrobin + ropiconazole and trifloxystrobin + cyproconazole were ested fungicides. For the determination of the efficiency f the products, the daily growth of the fungus was valuated, being compared with the control. It was determined the percentage of growth inhibition. All of the treatments were effective in the inhibition of the growthof this fungus.

Influencia da temperatura e da luz sobre a germinacao de marcela (Achyrocline satureioides). Repositório Alice

O trabalho teve como objetivo estudar alguns aspectos sobre a germinacao de sementes de marcela (Achyrocline satureioides), planta de intenso uso na medicina popular. A germinacao foi testada sob a influencia da temperatura, na presenca e ausencia de luz. Entre as temperaturas de 20, 25, 30 e 35C, a maior porcentagem de germinacao e o menor tempo medio de germinacao ocorreram a 20-25C na presenca de luz. Temperatura de 30 e 35C induziram inibicao ou dormencia secundaria. Sob as temperaturas de 20, 25 e 30C, as sementes mostraram ser fotoblasticas positivas. Com o armazenamento de dez meses apos a colheita, houve decrescimo significativo do poder germinativo.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência do Mg na absorção do Zn e do Mn em quatro cultivares de soja. Utilizou-se a técnica de cinética de absorção por raízes destacadas. As raízes foram colocadas em frascos com as seguintes combinações: três doses de Mg (1,0, 3,0 e 6,0 mmol L-1) x cinco doses de Zn ou Mn (0,5, 1,0, 2,0, 5,0 e 10,0 mmol L-1), com três repetições. Com pipetador, foi colocado 14,8 MBq de radiozinco ou de radiomanganês. Após uma hora de exposição, as raízes foram lavadas e secadas em estufa; em seguida foram pesadas e determinou-se a radioatividade. Se evaluó el efecto de diferentes especias o condimentos sobre la calidad microbiológica del tempeh y la posible acción inhibidora de sus contaminantes. El tempeh se obtuvo a partir de frijol de soya el cual se sometió a los procesos de cocción, escurrimiento y fermentación. Um conjunto de dados, com alta dispersao experimental, de uma reacao de inibicao de uma peroxidase por quecertina foi usado para demonstrar o modo pelo qual e possivel, atraves de manipulacao grafica e de analise de regressao linear, obter resultados estatisticamente interpretaveis sobre o mecanismo da inibicao enzimatica. O modelo cinetico mais provavel da reacao foi estabelecido como sendo o de uma inibicao nao-competitiva mista. Experiencias previas demostraron la presencia de epitopes ABO en Ascaris lumbricoides. El objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar la capacidad inhibitoria del parásito para estos epitopes por cuantificación de la hemaglutinación aplicando el método de difusión lumínica por partículas en suspensión. Se seleccionaron 8 extractos parasitarios (EA) de pacientes grupo sanguíneo B y 4 de grupo A (con y sin epitopes ABO). This study aims to evaluate the phytotoxicity potential of leaf and root extracts of Drimys brasiliensis on the germination and seedling growth of Panicum maximum and Euphorbia heterophylla and its influence on metaxylem cell size in the seedling roots of the latter specie. The leaf and root extracts were fractionated by partition chromatography, and the hexane and ethyl acetate fractions obtained from each organ were evaluated at different concentrations for phytotoxic activity in several bioassays.
