ABSTRACT: The recognized allelopathic activity of oats as a soil-cover plant induces the study of the potential of their germplasm. The objective of this study is to verify if there is genotype variability in the Avena spp. with regard to allelopathic activity. Extracts of A. strigosa ‘Agro Quaraí’, ‘Agro Esteio’, ‘Embrapa139’, ‘AF 12104’, ‘AF 12109’, ‘AF 12202’, ‘AF 12209’, A. sativa ‘UPFPS Farroupilha’ and ‘AF 1345 Ucraniana,’ were prepared in three concentrations w/v (5 g, 10 g, and 20 g of dry mass 100 mL-1). The experiment was conducted in a germination chamber for 15 days, with lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) as the recipient plant. There was complete inhibition of germination under 20% w/v extracts and partial inhibition at 10% w/v. Only 5% w/v observed... |

Herbicidal potential of different plant aqueous extracts was evaluated against early seedling growth of rice weeds in pot studies. Plant aqueous extracts of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), sunflower (Helianthus annuus), brassica (Brassica compestris), mulberry (Morris alba), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldunensis), and winter cherry (Withania somnifera) at a spray volume of 18 L ha-1 each at the 2-4 leaf stage of rice weeds viz horse purslane (Trianthema portulacastrum) [broad-leaf], jungle rice (Echinochloa colona), and E. crus-galli (barnyard grass) [grasses] and purple nut sedge (Cyperus rotundus) and rice flat sedge (C. iria) [sedges]. The results showed significant interactive effects between plant aqueous extracts and the tested weed species for seedling... |

This study analyses venom from the elapid krait snake Bungarus sindanus, which contains a high level of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. The enzyme showed optimum activity at alkaline pH (8.5) and 45ºC. Krait venom AChE was inhibited by substrate. Inhibition was significantly reduced by using a high ionic strength buffer; low ionic strength buffer (10 mM PO4 pH 7.5) inhibited the enzyme by 1. 5mM AcSCh, while high ionic strength buffer (62 mM PO4 pH 7.5) inhibited it by 1 mM AcSCh. Venom acetylcholinesterase was also found to be thermally stable at 45ºC; it only lost 5% of its activity after incubation at 45ºC for 40 minutes. The Michaelis-Menten constant (Km) for acetylthiocholine iodide hydrolysis was found to be 0.068 mM. Krait venom... |

Alkaline phosphatases are the main enzymes required by microorganisms to hydrolyse organic phosphorus into available phosphate in aquatic environments. The investigations of alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) usually generate numerous samples (size fractionation, Michaelis-Menten kinetics). Therefore, convenient and reliable preservation of incubated samples for a deferred analysis would be very useful when measurements cannot be performed right away. The APA of marine pond waters was measured using 4-Methylumbelliferyl phosphate (MUF-P) as the fluorogenic substrate modelling natural organic phosphorus compounds. Where typical inhibitors of other enzymatic activities, such as 1% sodium dodecyl sulfate, mercuric chloride, or buffered solutions of ammonium... |

Ostrich raising around the world have some key factors and farming profit depend largely on information and ability of farmers to rear these animals. Non fertilized eggs from ostriches are discharged in the reproduction season. Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli are microorganisms involved in animal and human diseases. In order to optimize the use of sub products of ostrich raising, non fertilized eggs of four selected birds were utilized for development of polyclonal IgY antibodies. The birds were immunized (200ug/animal) with purified recombinant staphylococcal enterotoxin C (recSEC) and synthetic recRAP, both derived from S. aureus, and recBFPA and recEspB involved in E. coli pathogenicity, diluted in FCA injected in the braquial muscle. Two... |

Hesperidin, a natural compound, suppresses the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition through the TGF-β1/Smad signaling pathway. However, studies on the detailed effects and mechanisms of hesperidin are rare. The present study showed that, for A549 alveolar epithelial cells, the anti-proliferative effects of hesperidin occurred in a dose-dependent manner, with an IC50= 216.8 µM at 48 h. TGF-β1 was used to activate the Smad signaling pathway and induce the epithelial to mesenchymal transition in cells. Treatment with hesperidin or SB431542 was used for antagonism of Smad pathway activation. Hesperidin inhibited the increase in ɑ-SMA and Col1ɑ-1 and the decrease in E-cadherin in a dose-dependent manner from concentration of 20 µM to 60 µM, as assessed by both... |

Leaf spot is a disease provoked by the fungus Bipolaris maydis, that it causes great damages for annual crops, as the corn, the wheat and the oats. Tests "in vitro" were accomplished seeking to evaluate the efficiency in the inhibition of the mycelial growth of that patogenic fungus through five fungicides: tetraconazol, tebuconazole, azoxystrobin + cyproconazole, trifloxystrobin + ropiconazole and trifloxystrobin + cyproconazole were ested fungicides. For the determination of the efficiency f the products, the daily growth of the fungus was valuated, being compared with the control. It was determined the percentage of growth inhibition. All of the treatments were effective in the inhibition of the growthof this fungus. |

ABSTRACT: Allelopathy is the term used to define any process involving secondary metabolites produced by plants and microorganisms that influence growth and development of agrobiological systems. Currently, it is sought to find allelochemicals of interest and know how to apply them in bio-herbicides to combat weeds. In this study, the effects of the crude leaf extract and fractions of Machaerium hirtum (Vell.) Stellfeld were analyzed on Euphorbia heterophylla L. (wild poinsettia) and Ipomoea grandifolia (Dammer) O’Donell (morning glory), as well as the occurrence of morphoanatomical changes. For this, 0.04 g of the crude extract and fractions were solubilized and diluted (50 mL) to concentrations of 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 g L-1 (m/v). Initial growth tests... |

In this study, 51 seafood products were screened to select psychrophilic inhibiting lactic acid bacteria. 5575 colonies were tested for inhibition against four target strains : Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus xylosus, Pseudomonas sp. and Serratia liquefaciens. 456 colonies (8,2%) showed inhibition and 132 (28,9%) of them were picked up. 54 isolates growing at 15°C but not at 30°C were selected. Basic phenotypic characteristics (Gram, catalase and oxidase test) were then tested. Finally, 52 presumptive psychrophilic LAB strains were selected. The inhibition spectrum of these strains was enlarged to 14 spoiling or pathogenic target strains relevant for seafood products. The inhibition profiles were recorded, and clustering was made to separate eight... |
