Agroforestry system improves soil carbon and nitrogen stocks in depth after land-use changes in the Brazilian semi-arid region. Repositório Alice
TONUCCI, R. G.; VOGADO, R. F.; SILVA, R. D.; POMPEU, R. C. F. F.; ODA-SOUZA, M.; SOUZA, H. A. de.
Abstract: Agroforestry systems have the potential to increase soil organic matter, with effects on soil carbon and nitrogen contents, but information on the application of these systems in semi-arid regions is still scarce. This study aimed to analyze soil carbon and nitrogen stocks in the conversion of native forest from the Caatinga Biome into integrated agriculture systems in the Brazilian semi-arid region. We evaluated the following management systems in the Haplic Inceptisol (Cambissolo Háplico eutrófico): (1) Intercropping area, cultivated with corn and Massai grass; (2) Caatinga (natural vegetation); (3) AFS10: agroforestry system with native woody forest rows occupying 33 % and agriculture occupying 66 % of the total area; and (4) AFS20:...

This study aimed to evaluate the frequency and intensity of GreenFeed (GF) use by Nellore steers using different attractants in pastures of integrated systems. The attractant protein supplement and Tifton bermudagrass pelleted hay flavored with vanilla were evaluated over a period of 15 days. The pelleted hay stimulated the animals to stay longer in the equipment (24.23 s), with 8% more visits in intervals longer than 30 s in contrast to protein supplement. This indicates that pelleted hay flavored with vanilla is a potential attractant to encourage Nellore steers to visit GF in grazing systems.

In the context of global warming and climate changes, livestock production systems may be beneficial or prejudicial to the environment considering they can act as sinks or sources of greenhouse gases - GHG. This makes the carbon - C - balance a fundamental tool in the evaluation of these systems. Carbon balance results must be compared with caution due to differences in the calculus methodology and in the range of processes considered for the anthropic emissions and sequestrations of C. Generally, degraded pastures are not able to neutralize GHG emissions by C sequestration in the soil while intensive pasture systems, integrated or not, have the potential to mitigate GHG and neutrale beef C footprint, generating C credits. Integrated systems have an...

REIS, A. A. dos; WERNER, J. P. S.; SILVA, B. C. da; ANTUNES, J. F. G.; ESQUERDO, J. C. D. M.; FIGUEIREDO, G. K. D. A.; COUTINHO, A. C.; LAMPARELLI, R. A. C.; MAGALHÃES, P. S. G..
ABSTRACT. Canopy height (CH) is one of the key parameters used to evaluate forage biomass production and support grazing management decisions in intensively managed fields. In this study, we demonstrate the potential of using textural information derived from PlanetScope (PS) imagery to estimate CH of intensively managed mixed pastures in an Integrated Crop-Livestock Systems (ICLS) in the western region of São Paulo State, Brazil. PS images and field data of CH were acquired during the forage growing season of 2019 (from May to November) to calibrate and validate the CH prediction models using the Random Forest (RF) regression algorithm. We used as predictor variables eight second-order texture measures derived from the green, red, near-infrared spectral...

Determinants of adoption of integrated systems by cattle farmers in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Repositório Alice
SOUZA FILHO, H. M. de; VINHOLIS, M. de M. B.; CARRER, M. J.; BERNARDO, R..
The level of diffusion of integrated croplivestock systems (ICLS) and integrated livestockforestry systems (ILFS) among cattle farmers in Brazil is still low, despite the environmental and economic benefits and governmental policy support. The present study aims at identifying the factors that determine the adoption of these systems in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The theory of adoption and diffusion of agricultural innovations takes into consideration several economic and non-economic determinants. Data from 175 farms and multinomial logit models were used to test hypotheses on the role played by farms?scale, farms? topography, farms? type of soil, farmers? knowledge, farmers? capacity for innovation, availability of local facilities for grain trade,...

ABSTRACT The objective with this study was to calculate the total cost of maize production and beef cattle in permanent pasture activities in separate production systems (conventional) and integrated systems (maize production plus beef cattle), as well as to verify economic gains explained by the economy of scope. The first step for the development of the research was to obtain field experimental data. Six experimental treatments were studied: corn grain production, beef cattle in permanent pasture, and four integrated systems based on different crop and pasture sowings. The second step consisted in the collection, calculation, and allocation of variable and fixed costs to estimate costs of production in the systems. The crop-livestock integration showed...

Les systèmes intégrés en aquaculture marine : une solution durable pour un meilleur respect de l’environnement littoral ArchiMer
Hussenot, Jerome.
The former extensive polyculture systems of marine fish farming, are today replaced mainly by intensive monoculture systems (salmon, shrimp). These systems, multiplied in the same coastal zone, can present a significant environmental impact. To treat and value fish farming effluents, new integrated systems were constructed and tested to different scales. Some examples of land- and seabased systems around the world are presented, in particular the European project of innovation "Genesis" in which several French public and private, national and regional organisations are participants (IFREMER, Regional Centre of Experiment and Aquacultural Applications in Poitou- Charentes, IDEE). Recommendations are supplied to promote the development of the integrated fish...

Abstract: Fast and accurate quantification of the available pasture biomass is essential to support grazing management decisions in intensively managed fields. The increasing temporal and spatial resolutions oered by the new generation of orbital platforms, such as Planet CubeSat satellites, have improved the capability of monitoring pasture biomass using remotely sensed data. Here, we assessed the feasibility of using spectral and textural information derived from PlanetScope imagery for estimating pasture aboveground biomass (AGB) and canopy height (CH) in intensively managed fields and the potential for enhanced accuracy by applying the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) algorithm. Our results demonstrated that the texture measures enhanced AGB and CH...

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of crossbred steers post-weaned in an integrated crop-livestock system (ICL) and finished in a feedlot, fed either a high-level concentrate diet or whole corn with no roughage. Weaned calves of two breed groups - ½ Angus × ½ Nellore, and ½ Charolais × ¼ Angus × ¼ Nellore - were allotted in a completely randomized experimental design (CRD). During the rainy season, the ½ Angus × ½ Nellore animals showed a higher performance than the ½ Charolais × ¼ Angus ×¼ Nellore ones, with 0.748 and 0.490 kg average daily gain, respectively. The productivity in the post-weaning period was 926 kg ha-1 body weight in a 11-month period, in the ICL system. Subsequently, the animals were confined and fed...
