Animal Efficiency in an Intensive Beef Production System AgEcon
Fleming, Euan M.; Fleming, Pauline; Rodgers, Heidi; Griffith, Garry R.; Johnston, David.
A stochastic input distance function is estimated to analyse the efficiency with which physical characteristics of individual lot-fed beef cattle in Australia are combined with conventional inputs to produce a final product possessing defined quality attributes. High mean technical efficiency estimates are reported for all animals and by breed. All partial output elasticities with respect to inputs are of expected sign. Of four outputs included in the analysis, carcass weight and moisture retention in meat after cooking have highly significant coefficients of expected sign, but two meat quality variables have coefficients of unexpected sign indicating that they decline as inputs increase. Some evidence is detected of scope economies between moisture...

Despite great expectations in the Seine River Basin, the WFD did not reduce diffuse pollution ArchiMer
Bouleau, Gabrielle; Barbier, Rémy; Halm-lemeille, Marie-pierre; Tassin, Bruno; Buchs, Arnaud; Habets, Florence.
European stakeholders engaged in combatting the eutrophication of the North Sea welcomed three Water Framework Directive innovations: a more holistic approach to quality, the binding nature of WFD objectives, and greater public participation. Twenty years later, however, there has been a disappointing amount of progress in the reduction of diffuse pollution. In the Seine River Basin, the amount of livestock rearing is low; yet the basin is subject to significant diffuse pollution due to agriculture. This paper reports our study of this case; we examine the literature on WFD implementation policy in order to identify the physical and social causes of this failure to reduce diffuse pollution. We show that the nitrates, phosphorus, and pesticides that affect...

Organic matter decomposition and microarthropod community structure in corn fields under low input and intensive management in Guaira, SP. Repositório Alice
RODRIGUES, G. S.; LIGO, M. A. V.; MINEIRO, J. L. de.
The rate of organic matter decomposition and the structure of the communities of microarthropods were compared between two corn fields receiving cantrasting agricultural management practices (low input and intensive farming). The rate of decomposition tended to be higher in the intensively managed field in the beginning of the growing season, but decreased to a level significantly lower than the observed in the low input field by the end of the growing season. This suggested that the biological community associated with the decomposition process could be negatively influenced in the intensively managed field. Analyses of the structure of microarthropod communities indicated differences between the two areas. The microarthropod populations present in the...

Risk assessment of water contamination by agrochemical in watershed. Repositório Alice
LUIZ, A. J. B.; NEVES, M. C.; GOMES, M. A. F.; SPADOTTO, C. A.; LUCHIARI JUNIOR, A..
Intensive agricultural systems are based on the heavy use of pesticides and fertilizers. This fact offer a high contamination risk of the natural resources, even when adequate technical of storage, application and disposal are used. Brasil used in 1993 61,845t of active ingredients of pesticides (insecticide, fungicide and herbicide) and 11,424,635 t of fertilizers (phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium), being the application rates variable as a function of region and crop plants. The use was very high, for example, in corn, cotton, orange, potato, soybean, sugar-cane and tomato in the east region of Rio Parana basin. The risk of agrochemical contamination of the natural resource varies according to the environment and product properties, therefore it is...

Socioeconomic Causes of Loss of Animal Genetic Diversity: Analysis and Assessment AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
The number of breeds of domesticated animals, especially livestock, have declined rapidly. The proximate causes and processes involved in loss of breeds are outlined. Also the path-dependent effect and Swanson’s dominance-effect are discussed in relation to lock-in of breed selection. While these effects help to explain genetic erosion, they need to be supplemented to provide further explanation of biodiversity loss. In the respect, it is shown that the extension of markets and economic globalisation have contributed significantly to the loss of breeds. In addition, the decoupling of animal husbandry from surrounding natural environmental conditions, particularly industrialised intensive animal husbandry, is further eroding the stock of genetic resources....

Sustainable Agriculture AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
This paper provides an overview of concepts of sustainable agriculture and possible methods of attaining sustainability of agricultural yields and production. Reasons are given as to why modern industrialised agriculture might be less sustainable in terms of yields than traditional agriculture. The question of whether organic agriculture is likely to be more sustainable than non-organic agriculture is considered as well as organic agriculture’s likely impact on wild biodiversity. The impact of the development of agriculture on wild biodiversity is assessed because some environmentalists see the conservation of wild biodiversity as an important ingredient of sustainable development. However, there is a policy conflict between conservationist groups. Some...

The Economics of Biodiversity Conservation in Agricultural Transition AgEcon
Omer, Amani A.; Pascual, Unai; Russell, Noel P..
This paper explores the dynamic effects of biodiversity conservation on agricultural production in the context of specialised intensive farming systems that may be in transition towards more sustainable farming. The focus is on the analysis of the dynamic effects of changes in the levels of agrobiodiversity, on technical change and productivity in intensive agricultural systems. A theoretical model is used to derive hypotheses regarding these linkages that are empirically tested using a stochastic production frontier model with data from a panel of UK cereal farms for the period 1989-2000. The results suggest that the increased agrobiodiversity has positively helped to shift the production frontier outwards. This indicates that agricultural transition from...
