A comparative study: use of a Brain-computer Interface (BCI) device by people with cerebral palsy in interaction with computers Anais da ABC (AABC)
Heidrich,Regina O.; Jensen,Emely; Rebelo,Francisco; Oliveira,Tiago.
ABSTRACT This article presents a comparative study among people with cerebral palsy and healthy controls, of various ages, using a Brain-computer Interface (BCI) device. The research is qualitative in its approach. Researchers worked with Observational Case Studies. People with cerebral palsy and healthy controls were evaluated in Portugal and in Brazil. The study aimed to develop a study for product evaluation in order to perceive whether people with cerebral palsy could interact with the computer and compare whether their performance is similar to that of healthy controls when using the Brain-computer Interface. Ultimately, it was found that there are no significant differences between people with cerebral palsy in the two countries, as well as between...

Agronomical, genetical and developmental characterization of fs6.4: a Quantitative Trait Locus controlling melon fruit shape National Institute of Agronomic Research
Moreno, E.; Fernández-Silva, I.; Eduardo, I.; Mascarell, A.; Alvarez, J.M.; Caño, A.; Monforte, A.J..
The genetic control of melon fruit shape is complex. Recently, several Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) affecting melon fruit shape have been identified using an introgression line population derived from the cross between a Cucumis melo ‘Piel de Sapo’ cultivar and the Korean accession PI 161375 ‘Songwan Charmi’ (SC). One of these QTLs, fs6.4, was selected for further genetical and developmental characterization. The SC allele of fs6.4 induces round fruit by limiting the longitudinal development of the fruit. Its mode of gene action is largely additive, showing low interactions with environment, genetic background or when combined with other fruit shape QTLs. Its chromosomal position could be narrowed to the central part of Linkage Group VI, breaking the...

Behavioral changes induced by cocaine in mice are modified by a hyperlipidic diet or recombinant leptin BJMBR
Erhardt,E.; Zibetti,L.C.E.; Godinho,J.M.; Bacchieri,B.; Barros,H.M.T..
The objective of the present study was to determine if the acute behavioral effects of cocaine acutely administered intraperitoneally (ip) at doses of 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg on white male CF1 mice, 90 days of age, would be influenced by leptin acutely administered ip (at doses of 5, 10 and 20 µg/kg) or by endogenous leptin production enhanced by a high-fat diet. The acute behavioral effects of cocaine were evaluated in open-field, elevated plus-maze and forced swimming tests. Results were compared between a group of 80 mice consuming a balanced diet and a high-fat diet, and a group of 80 mice fed a commercially available rodent chow formula (Ralston Purina) but receiving recombinant leptin (rLeptin) or saline ip. Both the high-fat-fed and rLeptin-treated mice...

Biochemical characterization of the nuclease StoNurA from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Sulfolobus tokodaii Anais da ABC (AABC)
Wei,Tao; Yang,Kunpeng; Zang,Jie; Mao,Duobin.
Abstract The DNA nuclease gene ST2109 has been cloned from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Sulfolobus tokodaii and expressed in Escherichia coli. The recombinant protein StoNurA has been purified to homogeneity by affinity chromatography and gel filtration chromatography. Biochemical analyses demonstrated that StoNurA exhibited DNA binding and 5’–3’ exonuclease activities towards ssDNA and dsDNA. The temperature and pH optima of StoNurA were determined to be 65 °C and 8.0, respectively. The activity of StoNurA was found to be dependent of Mn2+, and its half-life of heat inactivation at 100 °C was 5 min. Gel filtration chromatography revealed that StoNurA could form dimers in solution. Pull-down assays also showed that StoNurA physically interacted with a...

Biophysical and sociocultural factors underlying spatial trade-offs of ecosystem services in semiarid watersheds Ecology and Society
Harrison, Paula A; Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford; Paula.Harrison@ouce.ox.ac.uk; Berry, Pam; Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford; pam.berry@eci.ox.ac.uk.
Biophysical and social systems are linked to form social-ecological systems whose sustainability depends on their capacity to absorb uncertainty and cope with disturbances. In this study, we explored the key biophysical and socio-cultural factors underlying ecosystem service supply in two semiarid watersheds of southern Spain. These included variables associated with the role that freshwater flows and biodiversity play in securing the system’s capacity to sustain essential ecosystem services and their relationship with social demand for services, local water governance, and land-use intensification. Our results reveal the importance of considering the invisible dimensions of water and biodiversity, i.e. green freshwater flows and trait-based...

Characterization of the interactions between chitosan/whey protein at different conditions Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
YE,Lizhu; CHEN,Huibin.
Abstract This research investigated the interaction between chitosan and whey protein molecules in terms of pH and heating. The FTIR, rheological analysis, turbidity, and zeta potential measurements were used to assess this interaction. At pH 4.0, addition of low amount chitosan with chitosan/whey protein isolate (C/WPI) ratio of 1:5 effectively prevented the denaturation of whey proteins after heating, whereas high amount of chitosan (C/WPI,1:2) led to depletion flocculation. The combination of chitosan and whey proteins was electrostatic attracting at pH 5.5 and 6.0. At low chitosan addition, the complexes formed at pH 5.5 showed higher viscosity and the complexes formed at pH 6.0 showed a shear-thinning behaviour. At high chitosan addition, the...

Compatibility Polymorphism Based on Long-Term Host-Parasite Relationships: Cross Talking Between Biomphalaria glabrata and the Trematode Schistosoma mansoni From Endemic Areas in Brazil ArchiMer
Lima, Mariana G.; Montresor, Lângia C.; Pontes, Joana; Augusto, Ronaldo De C.; Silva, Jairo Pinheiro Da; Thiengo, Silvana C..
Sympatric snail populations have been kept in the laboratory since the isolation of the parasite from the field. To evaluate the influence of the intermediate host in the infectivity of S. mansoni, this allopatric strain was compared to two sympatric strains, from different geographical origins, and with different time of maintenance in the laboratory. Snail–trematode compatibility was accessed for a total of nine possible combinations (three snail populations, three schistosome strains), using different charges of parasite: 1, 5, 10, and 15 miracidia/snail. Each S. mansoni strain was characterized according to its infectivity phenotype that reflects the efficiency of their infection mechanism and all B. glabrata populations were characterized according to...

Cultivating Communication: Participatory Approaches in Land Restoration in Iceland Ecology and Society
Berglund, Brita; Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Agricultural University of Iceland; brita@lbhi.is; Hallgren, Lars; Department of Urban and Rural Development, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences ; Lars.Hallgren@slu.se.
Stakeholder participation in environmental management is increasing. Staff of environmental agencies, however, often lack training in communication and in conducting participatory processes. Their interpretation of “participation” is of interest because interpretation affects how participation is practiced. We explored how participation was interpreted within the Soil Conservation Service of Iceland and how the interpretation affected how participation was carried out in two land restoration projects. Our methods included semi-structured interviews with agency staff and involved stakeholders, participant observations, and document review. The findings showed that participation was seen as a method to accomplish the agency’s...

Effect of bacterial interactions on the spoilage of cold-smoked salmon ArchiMer
Joffraud, Jean-jacques; Cardinal, Mireille; Cornet, Josiane; Chasles, Jean-sebastien; Leon, Sandrine; Gigout, Frederique; Leroi, Francoise.
Cold-smoked salmon is a lightly preserved fish product in which a mixed microbial flora develops during storage and where the interactive behaviour of micro-organisms may contribute to their growth and spoilage activity. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the bacterial interactions between the main species contaminating the cold-smoked salmon on bacterial growth, chemical and sensory changes, and spoilage. First, Carnobacterium piscicola, Photobacterium phosphoreum, Lactobacillus sakei, Vibrio sp., Brochothrix thermosphacta and Serratia liquefaciens-like were inoculated as pure cultures on sterile cold-smoked salmon. All bacterial species grew well; Vibrio sp. was the fastest and L. sakei strains developed very rapidly as well with a high...

Etude des interactions entre l'huître plate Ostrea edulis et le parasite Bonamia ostreae en cytométrie en flux et en hybridation soustractive suppressive (SSH) ArchiMer
Morga, Benjamin.
The French ostreiculture history highlights the fragility of its production caused by stocks overexploitation and diseases. Particularly, the flat oyster production decreased a lot after the appearance of two parasitic diseases: marteilliose and bonamiose. The bonamiose is due to a parasite Bonamia ostreae. The study of interactions between the parasite and oysters hemocytes with flow cytometry allowed to identify modifications of hemocytes activities wh en active parasite is present. On the other hand, inactive parasite does not induce modification for the same hemocyte's activities. Finally, a new study approach, subtractive and suppressive hybridization, has been undertaken in order to identify genes expressed by hemocytes and parasites during in vitro...
