Santos,André Luiz Quagliatto; Brito,Fernando Moraes Machado; Bosso,Andrea Cristina Scarpa; Vieira,Lucelia Gonçalves; Silva Junior,Luiz Martins da; Kaminishi,Arthur Paulino Sanzo; Silva,Juliana Macedo Magnino; Pinto,José Guilherme Souza; Moura,Mariela Silva; Rosa,Marcelo de Alcántara.
The pirarucu, Arapaimidae family fish, is one of the most important and emblematic species of Amazon. To investigate their circulatory system anatomies features were used 10 specimens with 74 cm medium total length, from river Araguaia lakes, Sao Miguel do Araguaia, Goias, Brazil. The fishes had their celomatic cavity open with dorsal aorta artery identified and cannulation where was injected synthetic latex. Fixation of those specimens was by injection of 10% formalin. In that specie, the coeliac-mesenteric artery is the only one arterial vessel responsible to digestive tract flow and always ramified from 2nd, 3rd and 4th left efferent branchial arteries. The stomach is flowing by coeliac artery and a gastric branch of the cecal ventral artery; intestine...

Body Morphometry and Development of the Digestive System of Grey Partridge (Perdix Perdix) Depending on Age and Gender 89
Kokoszyński,D; Biegniewska,M; Wilkanowska,A; Saleh,M; Bernacki,Z; Stęczny,K; Kmiecik,M.
ABSTRACT The experiment used 100 grey partridges (Perdix perdix L.), which were reared first in confinement and later in aviaries. Partridges were lighter and had greater body dimensions at 36 weeks compared to 12 weeks except for trunk length. Older birds showed greater values (p>0.05) of compactness and lower values of massiveness and long-leggedness. Significant differences were found for keel length in females. At 36 weeks, male and female partridges had significantly greater total intestinal length, males had significantly longer small intestine and rectum, and females were characterized by significantly longer caeca and greater (p<0.05) intestine to body length ratio. Older birds had significantly greater gizzard weight and percentage and heart...

Changes in the electrophysiological parameters of the posterior intestine of Anguilla anguilla (Pisces) induced by oxytocin, urotensin II and aldosterone 56
In view of the importance of the intestine in the osmoregulation of freshwater fishes, we determined the effects of oxytocin, urotensin II (UII), and aldosterone added to the serosal side of the isolated posterior intestine of the freshwater-adapted teleost Anguilla anguilla on electrophysiological parameters. Oxytocin decreased the short-circuit current (SCC) and transepithelial potential difference (TPD) at concentrations of 1 and 10 mU/ml (to 50% and 42% of control values, respectively), but did not alter these parameters at a concentration of 0.1 mU/ml. UII reduced SCC and TPD at concentrations of 10 nM, 50 nM and 100 nM (to 85% of control values), but increased these parameters at the concentration of 500 nM (to 115% of control values). Aldosterone...

Cholesterol induces fetal rat enterocyte death in culture 56
Gazzola,J.; Silva,É.P.P.; Kanunfre,C.C.; Verlengia,R.; Vecchia,M.G.; Curi,R..
The effect of cholesterol on fetal rat enterocytes and IEC-6 cells (line originated from normal rat small intestine) was examined. Both cells were cultured in the presence of 20 to 80 µM cholesterol for up to 72 h. Apoptosis was determined by flow cytometric analysis and fluorescence microscopy. The expression of HMG-CoA reductase and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) was measured by RT-PCR. The addition of 20 µM cholesterol reduced enterocyte proliferation as early as 6 h of culture. Reduction of enterocyte proliferation by 28 and 41% was observed after 24 h of culture in the presence and absence of 10% fetal calf serum, respectively, with the effect lasting up to 72 h. Treatment of IEC-6 cells with cholesterol for 24 h raised...

Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction in a dog: case report 45
Bicalho,A.L.; Silva,A.P.C.; Paixão,T.A.; Cardoso Jr.,R.B.; Santos,R.L..
Intestinal pseudo-obstruction is a rare disorder that affects gastrointestinal propulsion. It may be secondary to several pathological conditions or it may develop without a known cause. A 1.2 year-old intact Pug bitch had a history of vomiting and constipation, which were followed by diarrhea and distended abdomen. Hypomotility and dilation of the small intestine, which was filled with gas, were observed during laparotomy. Histologically, full thickness biopsy specimens demonstrated a severe loss and degeneration of leiomyocytes in the inner and outer muscular layers of the intestinal wall, whereas there was a marked hypertrophy and hyperplasia of smooth muscle cells in the lamina propria, and extremely thickened muscularis mucosae arranged in bundles...

Clinical Applications of Electrointestinography in the Horse 19
SASAKI, Naoki; LEE, Inhyung; AYUKAWA, Yu; YAMADA, Haruo; 佐々木, 直樹.
It is thought that in order to effectively treat gastrointestinal dysfunction, it should be detected at an early stage. The present study aimed to observe the movement via Electrointestinography (EIG) in the small intestine, cecum, right ventral colon and right dorsal colon, and to examine the procedure for assessing gastrointestinal function. Seven healthy thoroughbred horses were used. They were allowed food twice a day. EIG was measured at ten-minute intervals over a 24 hr period, and running spectral analysis was used. As a result, it was clear that EIG could non-invasively assess gastrointestinal function by setting the cut-off value of the frequency band to 1.8-12.0 cpm for a part of the digestive tract which is in a comparatively fixed position. The...

Determining the Best Sectioning Method and Intestinal Segment for Morphometric Analysis in Broilers 89
Gava,MS; Moraes,LB; Carvalho,D; Chitolina,GZ; Fallavena,LCB; Moraes,HLS; Herpich,J; Salle,CTP.
Brazilian poultry production is very efficient and demands maximum broiler performance. Therefore, digestive system pathologies have a relevant role. Considering it is difficult to obtain consistent information on intestinal morphometric analysis, this study aimed at establishing essential and clear criteria for the collection of intestinal segments for morphometric analysis. Fifteen 13-d-old broilers were sacrificed and three intestinal segments were collected per bird. Two 3-cm long sections were obtained from each of the intestinal segments. Samples were collected open or closed. The closed samples were transversely, hemicylindrically, or longitudinally sectioned. Samples were processed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The number of microscopic...

Dietary lipid level affects fatty acid composition and hydrolase activities of intestinal brush border membrane in seabass 5
Cahu, Chantal; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Corraze, Genevieve; Coves, Denis.
Triplicate groups of juvenile seabass (initial weight of 241 g) were fed during 13 weeks three isonitrogenous experimental diets containing different lipid levels, 12% (LL group), 21% (ML group) and 30% (HL group). At the end of the experiment, fish weight gain was similar among the 3 dietary groups. Intestinal brush border membranes were purified for each dietary group; one part of the brush border fraction was dedicated to enzyme assays, the remaining fraction being used for lipid extraction followed by fatty acid analysis. The fatty acid composition of the brush border membrane differed among the 3 groups, although the 3 experimental diets had the same fatty acid composition. The increase in dietary lipid level resulted in a lowering in (n-3)...

Food passage time through the alimentary tract of a brazilian teleost fish, Prochilodus scrofa (Steindachner, 1881) using radiography 62
BARBIERI,Renato Lamounier; LEITE,Rodolpho Guião; STERMAN,Franklin de Almeida; HERNANDEZ-BLAZQUEZ,Francisco Javier.
Food passage time through the digestive tract of a detritivorous freshwater fish (Prochilodus scrofa) was determinate by radiographic techniques using barium sulfate as a contrast medium. The fish were kept in tanks at a constant temperature of 23.5ºC and received by an oral catheter a mixture of 2.5 parts of ground ration and 1 part of oral suspension of contrast medium (Celobar). Radiographs were taken at intervals of 3 hours. Immediately after the introduction of the mixture the stomach was outlined by the contrast. A sphincter was observed between the cardiac and the muscular stomachs. After 3 hours, 80 per cent of the proximal intestine was filled. After 6 hours the contrast reached the proximal, medial and distal portions of the intestine. After 9...

Guanylin peptides: cyclic GMP signaling mechanisms 56
Forte,L.R.; Freeman,R.H.; Krause,W.J.; London,R.M..
Guanylate cyclases (GC) serve in two different signaling pathways involving cytosolic and membrane enzymes. Membrane GCs are receptors for guanylin and atriopeptin peptides, two families of cGMP-regulating peptides. Three subclasses of guanylin peptides contain one intramolecular disulfide (lymphoguanylin), two disulfides (guanylin and uroguanylin) and three disulfides (E. coli stable toxin, ST). The peptides activate membrane receptor-GCs and regulate intestinal Cl- and HCO3- secretion via cGMP in target enterocytes. Uroguanylin and ST also elicit diuretic and natriuretic responses in the kidney. GC-C is an intestinal receptor-GC for guanylin and uroguanylin, but GC-C may not be involved in renal cGMP pathways. A novel receptor-GC expressed in the opossum...

Hereditary hemochromatosis: An opportunity for gene therapy 48
EZQUER,FERNANDO; NÚÑEZ,MARCO T; ROJAS,ALEJANDRO; ASENJO,JUAN; ISRAEL,YEDY.
Levels of body iron should be tightly controlled to prevent the formation of oxygen radicals, lipoperoxidation, genotoxicity, and the production of cytotoxic cytokines, which result in damage to a number of organs. Enterocytes in the intestinal villae are involved in the apical uptake of iron from the intestinal lumen; iron is further exported from the cells into the circulation. The apical divalent metal transporter-1 (DMT1) transports ferrous iron from the lumen into the cells, while the basolateral transporter ferroportin extrudes iron from the enterocytes into the circulation. Patients with hereditary hemochromatosis display an accelerated transepithelial uptake of iron, which leads to body iron accumulation that results in cirrhosis, hepatocellular...
