A dichotomous species of Codium (Bryopsidales, Chlorophyta) is colonizing northern Chile RChHN
GONZÁLEZ,ALEJANDRA; SANTELICES,BERNABÉ.
In late 2001 and early 2002, a dichotomous species of Codium appeared colonizing the low intertidal and shallow subtidal bottoms of Caldera Bay, northern Chile (27° 03’ S, 70° 51’ W). Due to the ecological and economic impact the species is having in Caldera Bay and its potential spread along the Chilean coastline, we studied the taxonomic identity of the species and examined its relationships with other dichotomous species of Codium reported for temperate Pacific South America. Morphological analyses suggest that the seaweeds from Caldera Bay belong to Codium fragile (Suringar) Hariot. Not only is there strong agreement in internal and external morphological characters, but among all the species reported for Peru and Chile, this is the only one exhibiting...

Welzen, P.C. van; Sweet, F.S.T.; Fernández-Casas, F.J..
Jatropha, a widespread, species rich genus, ranges from the Americas and Caribbean to Africa and India. In Malesia five species occur, all of which were introduced and originated in Central and South America. The five species are revised and an identification key, nomenclature, descriptions, distributions, ecology, vernacular names, uses and notes are provided. Special attention is given to the uses of J. curcas, because it is steadily gaining popularity as a potential biofuel plant and, because of that, is being cultivated more often.

Checklist of the macroalgae of Thau Lagoon (Herault, France), a hot spot of marine species introduction in Europe ArchiMer
Verlaque, Marc.
A checklist of macroalgae in Thau Lagoon (Herault, France), based on literature records and new collections, is given. Using present-day taxonomy, 196 taxa and stadia of macroalgae have been identified to date. Sixty of these were no longer found in the samples, 36 were new to the lagoon, and the taxonomic identity of 15 species was amended. Twenty-five new introduced taxa were identified, giving a total of 45 introduced macroalgae for the flora (23% of total). Among these, 17 taxa and several genera (Acrorhrix, Chondrus, Dasysiphonia (?), Prionitis) are new to the Mediterranean Sea and 12 are new to Europe. The majority (43 taxa) may originate from the Pacific region, having arrived either directly or via other aquaculture sites. A highly probable vector...

Dietary breadth and trophic position of introduced European catfish Silurus glanis in the Tarn River (Garonne River basin), southwest France ArchiMer
Syvaeranta, Jari; Cucherousset, Julien; Kopp, Dorothee; Crivelli, Alain; Cereghino, Regis; Santoul, Frederic.
Although being a widely introduced and successfully established species, the European catfish Silurus glanis L. (the world’s third largest freshwater fish) remains poorly studied in its introduced areas. Here we studied the trophic ecology of non-native European catfish in a large river system in south-western France using stomach content and stable isotope analyses (SIA). We used fin samples for SIA of catfish and hence tested the validity of using fin tissue as a proxy for muscle in SIA. The mean δ15N and δ13C values analysed from fin tissues did not differ from those analysed from muscle tissue and reflected strong and consistent relationships (r2 = 0.95 for carbon and r2 = 0.98 for nitrogen). The δ15N values varied almost 5‰ among the analysed catfish...

Drastic changes in the amphipod fauna (Crustacea) of Dutch inland waters during the last 25 years Naturalis
Pinkster, Sjouk; Scheepmaker, Maarten; Platvoet, Dirk; Broodbakker, Nico.
After the introduction of Gammarus tigrinus in The Netherlands some 25 years ago and of other recently invading amphipods (Crangonyx pseudogracilis and Corophium curvispinum) the native species decreased, the invaders increased. The success of these invaders and its impact on the local amphipod fauna is discussed. Electrophoretic tests give evidence that a second invasion of Gammarus tigrinus, this time from Germany, is taking place. Some predictions about future developments are made.

Efecto del alga invasora Undaria pinnatifida sobre la comunidad de peces de arrecife en los golfos Norpatagónicos OceanDocs
Irigoyen, A.J..
This study investigates the impact of Undaria pinnatifida on the reef fish assemblage associated with the coastal rocky reefs of Golfo Nuevo in northern Patagonia, Argentina. Undaria pinnatifida is a laminarian kelp, indigenous to the temperate regions of Japan, China and Korea. It has spread around the world by international shipping and has also been introduced in some regions for mariculture. Its expansion into the northern Patagonian gulfs and Peninsula Valdes, a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site, may threaten eco-tourism activities that depend on local biodiversity and the esthetic quality of the ecosystem. In particular, there is concern about the impact of Undaria on a variety of recreational activities including diving, angling and spear fishing, which...

Etude de la flore introduite dans le Bassin d'Arcachon ArchiMer
Verlaque, Marc; Auby, Isabelle; Plus, Martin; Belsher, Thomas.
An inventory of the marine macrophytes introduced into the Arcachon Basin has been carried out through an exhaustive bibliographical analysis complemented by several sampling campaign made in November 2005, July 2006, February and December 2007. As a result, 22 introduced species have been listed. Nine of them are new to the region, and Herposiphonia parca and Pterosiphonia tanakae, are recorded for the first time from the Atlantic Ocean. Of this exotic flora, 17 species have also been introduced into the Thau Lagoon (France, Mediterranean). Except for some old introductions for which the most probable vector is the shipping, an introduction along with shellfish transfers, directly from Japan or via other aquaculture sites is highly probable. The great...

First record of the invasive tapeworm, Schyzocotyle acheilognathi (Pseudophyllidea; Bothriocephalidae) in native freshwater fish, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOUZA,GEOVANE A. DE; MORESCA,VICTOR O.; TEIXEIRA,GUSTAVO M.; JEREP,FERNANDO C.; AGUIAR,ALINE.
ABSTRACT Schyzocotyle acheilognathi is a tapeworm cestode commonly found in native freshwater fishes from Asia. This cestode has low host specificity and for that reason it has been registered parasitizing more than 200 cultured and wild fish species, besides amphibians, reptiles and birds from different regions of the world. With a high pathogenic potential, S. acheilognathi may cause mortalities in highly infected fish. In South America, Schyzocotyle was reported in Cyprinus carpio from a Brazilian fish farm at the municipality of Cornélio Procópio, northern Paraná State and from the natural environment in C. carpio from Neuquen River, Patagonia, Argentina. So far, there has been no report of this parasite in South American native fishes. Herein we...

CONRADO, J. A. de A.; CAVALCANTE, A. C. R.; TONUCCI, R. G.; CARNEIRO, M. S. de S.; CÂNDIDO, M. J. D..
Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the thinning into strips and the enrichment with exotic grasses in a Caatinga area in order to maintain and increase the biodiversity of native vegetable species and forage production. Two studies were carried out?one in an area of Caatinga thinned into strips and one in an unmanipulated Caatinga area?during the rainy and rainy-dry season transition periods in 2016. The production of herbaceous biomass was evaluated, and the diversity and equability of the two areas were assessed through Shannon-Weaver (H') and Pielou (J') indexes. The establishment of massai and buffel grasses at the center and edges of the area thinned into strips was also evaluated. During the rainy season, the production of...
