The impetus behind this chapter came with the idea that oral tradition, handed down over generations in Aribinda, a small locality situated in the north of Burkina Faso, would be a source of information on the spread of spontaneous vegetation over the last hundred years or so. The attempt was in fact to end in failure, yet this very failure is significant in that it highlighted the quality of local knowledge concerning plants in Aribinda; it further commented on the attitudes wich we bring to bear, usually informated by standard anthropological methodology, on knowledge generally within local farming communities.
