Consensus of the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases and Brazilian Society of Clinical Oncology on the management and treatment of Kaposi's sarcoma BJID
Arruda,Érico; Jacome,Alexandre Andrade dos Anjos; Toscano,Ana Luiza de Castro Conde; Silvestrini,Anderson Arantes; Rêgo,André Santa Bárbara; Wiermann,Evanius Garcia; Cunha Jr.,Geraldo Felicio da; Melo,Heloisa Ramos Lacerda de; Morejón,Mirna Loro; Goldani,Luciano Zubaran; Pereira Jr.,Luiz Carlos; Silva,Mariliza Henrique; Treistman,Mauro Sergio; Pereira,Mônica Cristina Toledo; Romero,Patricia Maria Bezerra Xavier; Schmerling,Rafael Aron; Guedes,Rodrigo Antonio Vieira; Camargo,Veridiana Pires de.
Kaposi's sarcoma is a multifocal vascular lesion of low-grade potential that is most often present in mucocutaneous sites and usually also affects lymph nodes and visceral organs. The condition may manifest through purplish lesions, flat or raised with an irregular shape, gastrointestinal bleeding due to lesions located in the digestive system, and dyspnea and hemoptysis associated with pulmonary lesions. In the early 1980s, the appearance of several cases of Kaposi's sarcoma in homosexual men was the first alarm about a newly identified epidemic, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. In 1994, it was finally demonstrated that the presence of a herpes virus associated with Kaposi's sarcoma called HHV-8 or Kaposi's sarcoma herpes virus and its genetic sequence...

First survey for detecting the presence of human herpesvirus 8 infection (HHV-8) in Maputo, Mozambique BJID
Caterino-de-Araujo,Adele; Manuel,Rolanda Carmen Rafael; Bianco,Rosana Del; Santos-Fortuna,Elizabeth; Magri,Mariana Cavalheiro; Silva,Joyce Matie Kinoshita; Bastos,Rui.
Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), the etiological agent of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), is endemic in parts of the sub-Saharan, and KS has increased concomitantly with the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In Mozambique (MZ), no data concerning HHV-8 infection was available, thus the main of this work was to investigate, for the first time, the presence of HHV-8 infection in Maputo, MZ. Latent and lytic HHV-8-specific antibodies were assessed in blood samples from 189 individuals from the Central Hospital of Maputo, MZ, using "in-house" immunofluorescence assays conducted in São Paulo, Brazil. The results obtained were analyzed according to socio-demographic and clinical variables using the Chi-square test and logistic regression. An HHV-8 seropositivity of 1.8% and 9.7% was...

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus infection and Kaposi's sarcoma in Brazil BJMBR
Ramos-da-Silva,S.; Elgui-de-Oliveira,D.; Borges,L.; Bacchi,C.E..
Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) became a critical health issue with the emergence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in the 1980s. Four clinical-epidemiological forms of KS have been described: classical KS, endemic KS, iatrogenic KS, and AIDS-associated KS. In 1994, Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) or human herpesvirus type 8 was identified by Chang and colleagues, and has been detected worldwide at frequencies ranging from 80 to 100%. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the frequency of KSHV infection in KS lesions from HIV-positive and HIV-negative patients in Brazil, as well as to review the current knowledge about KS transmission and detection. For these purposes, DNA from 51 cases of KS was assessed by PCR: 20 (39.2%) cases of...

Mycobacterial spindle cell pseudotumor of the appendix vermiformis in a patient with AIDS BJID
Basílio-de-Oliveira,Carlos Alberto; Eyer-Silva,Walter A.; Valle,Heliomar de Azevedo; Rodrigues,Ana Lúcia; Pimentel,Ana Luisa Pinheiro; Morais-de-Sá,Carlos Alberto.
Mycobacterial pseudotumor (MP) is a rare pathologic presentation of both Mycobacterium tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacterial disease, hitherto reported to occur only in immunosuppressed patients with or without human immunodeficiency virus infection. This lesion shares close pathologic resemblance to certain mesenchymal neoplasms, particularly Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), from which it must be properly differentiated due to distinct prognosis and therapy. We report a case of MP obliterating the lumen of the appendix vermiformis in a 34-year-old patient who died of complications of AIDS at our hospital in Rio de Janeiro. A total of 24 cases of MP (including our patient) have been described in the literature. MP has been found especially in lymph nodes,...

Prevalence of antibodies to human herpesvirus-8 in populations with and without risk for infection in São Paulo State BJMBR
Souza,V.A.U.F.; Sumita,L.M.; Freire,W.; Sato,H.K.; Grandi,J.L.; Pierrotti,L.C.; Nascimento,M.C.; Pannuti,C.S..
Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) is a newly described herpesvirus that is etiologically associated with all forms of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). Seroepidemiological studies have shown high prevalence rates of HHV-8 antibodies among men who have sex with men (MSM) and AIDS patients, African children, Brazilian Amerindians, and elderly individuals in certain regions of Europe. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of HHV-8 antibodies in healthy children and young adults from different cities in São Paulo State, and in a population at high risk for HHV-8 infection: HIV-negative MSM, and AIDS patients with and without KS. Antibodies to HHV-8 latency-associated nuclear antigen and lytic-phase antigens were detected by immunofluorescence assays. In...
