A radio tracking study of home range and movements of the marsupial Micoureus demerarae (Thomas) (Mammalia, Didelphidae) in the Atlantic forest of south-eastern Brazil Zoologia
Moraes Junior,Edsel Amorim; Chiarello,Adriano Garcia.
From August 2001 to July 2002 the home range and movements of seven Micoureus demerarae (Thomas, 1905) (three males and four females) were investigated using radio tracking in the União Biological Reserve, state of Rio de Janeiro, south-eastern Brazil. A total of 436 locations was obtained and home range estimated with fixed Kernel (95% of data points), and minimum convex polygon (MCP) methods, with 100 and 95% of data points. Male home ranges estimated by MCP (100%) ranged from 5.4-24.2 ha and females from 0.3-10.7 ha. Corresponding figures calculated with Kernel (95%) were 4-10.9 ha for males and 1.3-5.9 ha for females. Animals travelled on average 423 m/night, with males travelling significantly further (582.8 m/night) than females (335.1 m/night) (t...

Chemical and nutritional evaluation of kernels of bocaiuva, Acrocomia aculeata (Jacq.) Lodd. Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Hiane,Priscila A.; Baldasso,Paulo Aparecido; Marangoni,Sérgio; Macedo,Maria Lígia R..
Protein characterization and results of proximate composition and mineral analyses of fruit kernels of bocaiuva, Acrocomia aculeata (Jacq.) Lodd., are reported. The kernels presented high contents of oil (51.7%), protein (17.6%) and fiber (15.8%). The seeds´ soluble proteins were isolated according to their solubility. The main separated proteins were globulins (53.5%) and glutelins (40.0%). Moreover, the presence of low molecular mass proteases in these two fractions was shown by the SDS-PAGE method. The assays of protease-inhibitory and hemagglutinating activities showed that bocaiuva´s protein fractions were not resistant to trypsin or chymotrypsin activities and that both had low lectin content. The globulin in vitro digestibility assay resembled a...

Contemporary Issues in Estimating Yield Distributions AgEcon
Pujula, Aude Liliana; Maradiaga, David Isaias; Dicks, Michael R..
In the research area of crop yield density estimation and in particular in risk analysis, little emphasis has been given to the appropriateness of transformation methods (e.g., removing a linear trend) and how such transformations impact the reliability of the empirical distribution functions and the resulting probability estimates. Similarly, there is little consensus on the impact of environmental variables (e.g., rainfall and temperature) on empirical distributions of yields. Using historical county corn yield data for Arkansas and Louisiana and nonparametric methods, this empirical analysis shed light on the importance of data transformation in crop risk analysis. Results demonstrate that inappropriate data treatment can lead to misestimation of...

Development of a shelling method to recover whole kernels of the Cutia nut (Couepia edulis) Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Pessoa,José Dalton Cruz; Leeuwen,Johannes Van.
The kernel of the cutia nut (castanha-de-cutia, Couepia edulis (Prance) Prance) of the western Amazon, which is consumed by the local population, has traditionally been extracted from the nut with a machete, a dangerous procedure that only produces kernels cut in half. A shelling off machine prototype, which produces whole kernels without serious risks to its operator, is described and tested. The machine makes a circular cut in the central part of the fruit shell, perpendicular to its main axis. Three ways of conditioning the fruits before cutting were compared: (1) control; (2) oven drying immediately prior to cutting; (3) oven drying, followed by a 24-hour interval before cutting. The time needed to extract and separate the kernel from the endocarp and...

DEVELOPMENT OF ALMOND SEED EXTRACTOR FOR WHOLE KERNEL RECOVERY CIGR Journal
Ogundare, Adebayo Adeyemi.
Almond seed extraction from whole kernel recovery is a process which is usually performed manually thus making it laborious and time consuming. The purpose of this paper is to investigate a means for almond seed extraction for whole kernel recovery to close the gap in domestic, commercial and industrial demand of almond seeds for food and industrial processing. The machine comprises of four units: the hopper; the cracking chamber which embeds the shaft, the hammer and electric motor. SolidWorks software was used to determine the responses of the machine critical elements. The sample of almond fruits used was picked from the premises of University of Ilorin, Kwara State. The fruit (almond) was properly prepared by removing the fleshy parts from it and...

From the help desk: Local polynomial regression and Stata plugins AgEcon
Gutierrez, Roberto G.; Linhart, Jean Marie; Pitblado, Jeffrey S..
Local polynomial regression is a generalization of local mean smoothing as described by Nadaraya (1964) and Watson (1964). Instead of fitting a local mean, one instead fits a local pth-order polynomial. Calculations for local polynomial regression are naturally more complex than those for local means, but local polynomial smooths have better statistical properties. The computational complexity may, however, be alleviated by using a Stata plugin. In this article, we describe the locpoly command for performing local polynomial regression. The calculations involved are implemented in both ado-code and with a plugin, allowing the user to assess the speed improvement obtained from using the plugin. Source code for the plugin is also provided as part of the...

Mature pomegranate recognition methods in natural environments using machine vision Ciência Rural
Lei,Xiangxiao; Ouyang,Honglin; Xu,Lijuan.
ABSTRACT: The use of machine vision to recognize mature pomegranates in natural environments is of major significance in improving the applicability and work efficiency of picking robots. By analyzing the color characteristics of color images of mature pomegranates under different illumination conditions, the feasibility of the YCbCr color model for pomegranate image recognition under different illumination conditions was proven. First, the Cr component map of pomegranate image is selected and then the pomegranate fruit is segmented by the kernel fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm to obtain the pomegranate image. Contrast experiments of pomegranate image segmentation under different illumination conditions were then performed using the proposed kernel...

Movement patterns and home range in Diplomystes camposensis (Siluriformes: Diplomystidae), an endemic and threatened species from Chile Neotropical Ichthyology
Oyanedel,Alejandra; Habit,Evelyn; Belk,Mark C.; Solis-Lufí,Katherin; Colin,Nicole; Gonzalez,Jorge; Jara,Alfonso; Muñoz-Ramírez,Carlos. P..
ABSTRACT We document movement patterns and home range of Diplomystes camposensis, an endemic and threatened freshwater catfish from Chile. We tracked the movements of seven individuals of different body size (13.5 to 19 cm SL) using portable radio telemetry equipment to investigate movement patterns in relation to day/night activity and habitat use in the San Pedro River (Valdivia Basin). Tracked movements and model-based analyses revealed that D. camposensis has a large home range and high mobility. The average home range was 0.068163 ± 0.033313 km2, and the average area of higher activity was 0.005646 ± 0.011386 km2. The mean linear home range was 387.4 m. The results also showed that movements were longer during the night, supporting nocturnal habits....

PARAMETRIC AND NON-PARAMETRIC CROP YIELD DISTRIBUTIONS AND THEIR EFFECTS ON ALL-RISK CROP INSURANCE PREMIUMS AgEcon
Turvey, Calum G.; Zhao, Jinhua.
Normal, gamma and beta distributions are applied to 609 crop yield histories of Ontario farmers to determine which, if any, best describe crop yields. In addition, a distribution free non-parametric kernel estimator was applied to the same data to determine its efficiency in premium estimation relative to the three parametric forms. Results showed that crop yields are most likely to be described by a beta distribution but only for 50% of those tested. In terms of efficiency in premium estimation, minimum error criteria supports use of a kernel estimator for premium setting. However, this gain in efficiency comes at the expense of added complexity.

SOWING AND PLANTING PERIOD ON YIELD AND EAR QUALITY OF SWEET CORN (Zea mays L. var. saccharata) Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Ugur,Atnan; Maden,Hande Ayhan.
Sweet corn (Zea mays L. var. saccharata) attracts people with its amazing flavour. Adverse environmental factors decrease plant's cob yield and quality. A more effective production can be made by using resistant varieties and adjusting the sowing and plating periods. In this study, the effect of direct seed sowing and cultivating with seedlings in three different times (5, 15 and 25 May) on the sweet corn's cob yield and certain quality features have been investigated. In the research hybrid sweet corn varieties; 2201, Challenger, Merit, Sunshine and Yellow Baby were used. Ear weight, ear yield, ear length, ear diameter, sequence in ear, kernel numbers in the sequence, dry weight, TSS, chroma and hue values have been identified in the study. The values...
