Land use and suitability are essential tools for territorial planning of rural settlement. This work describes an analysis of these factors in a group of 18 MATOPIBA consolidated rural settlements created more than 10 years ago. These settlements are located in 12 different cities, 1 in Bahia, 6 in Maranhão and 11 in Tocantins, summarizing more than 77 thousand hectares and sheltering almost one thousand families. Regional scale data allows an overview of the situation. A land use analysis indicates a majority of natural vegetation and pasture, which represents 56% and 36%, respectively. Land suitability presents that 63% of the area is suitable for crops use and 36% for pasture. The intensive use for crops heavily depends on the use of technology. This... |

This work aims to analyze the dynamics of land use change by evaluating the spatio-temporal changes of sugarcane, verified in the period between 2000 and 2015, in the western portion of the São Paulo state. The study area includes parts of the municipalities of Andradina, Muritinga do Sul, Guaraçaí and Pereira Barreto, totaling an area of 1,115 km2. From a multitemporal series of Landsat satellite images of 30 m spatial resolution, the land use information was obtained for the sixteen years, using the Spring software. Land use and land cover maps were analyzed for each date, and the expansion of sugarcane activity in the region was verified, annually, for the period analyzed. As results, it was observed that sugarcane had an expansion in area between the... |

Abstract. In this paper we calculated soil carbon stocks in Brazil using 17 paired sites where soil stocks were determined in native vegetation, pastures and crop-livestock systems (CPS), and in other regional samplings encompassing more than 100 pasture soils, from 6.58° S to 31.53° S, involving three major Brazilian biomes: Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, and the Pampa. The average native vegetation soil carbon stocks at 10, 30 and 60 cm soil depth were equal to approximately 29, 64, and 92 Mg ha-1, respectively. In the paired sites, carbon losses of 7.5 Mg ha-1 and 11.6 Mg ha-1 in CPS systems were observed at 10 cm and 30 cm soil depths, respectively. In pasture soils, carbon losses were similar and equal to 7.5 Mg ha-1 and 11.0 Mg ha-1 at 10 cm and 30 cm... |

The structuring of a consolidated forest economy in the Amazon region would be an unprecedented contribution to the conservation and socioeconomics of the rural community. Therefore, the objective of this work was to conduct a literature review on the economic competitiveness of multiple-use community-forest management by land use in the Amazon region and thus elucidate the main causes and possible solutions for strengthening and enhancing a family-based forest economy in the region. Studies reported that despite the importance of the forest, the financial attractiveness of forest production under community-forest management was relatively limited when compared to other land-use options, such as agriculture. This was due to a set of factors, such as high... |
