For several years the fishermen of the West Indies have directed their activities towards new fishing grounds, notably the bathyales zones adjacent to island plateaux up to approximately 1000 metres in depth. Explorations carried out since 1989 have shown that diverse crustacean populations could be exploited. However, populations and exploitable stocks are not well known. The use of crustaceans traps as a fishing technique permits the capture of shellfish, shrimps and prawns of which at least six species could have commercial interest. The main objective of this work is do draw up an inventory of the principal commercial species as well as the accompanying species belonging to the subordres Decapoda macrura, anomura, brachyura and to the orders Isopoda... |

Discards of the French trawler fleet operating in the Celtic Sea in 1997 were studied. Twenty-six trips, representing 0.8% of the total fishing effort, were sampled. This fleet consists of three métiers, benthic trawlers, demersal trawlers and Nephrops trawlers. The fleet discarded an estimated 30,000 tons of animals in 1997, while landing 63,000 tons. The total quantity discarded did not differ among métiers, but the species composition of discards did. Benthic trawlers discarded mainly by-catch species, whereas demersal and Nephrops trawlers discarded primarily their target species. Whiting, megrim, Nephrops and hake were discarded in larger numbers than landed. Hence discards should probably be taken into account in catch-based assessments. However,... |

The general study, scheduled from 1984 to 1986, aims at providing a judgement about the fisheries in the Celtic Sea. This area has been chosen because it is frequented by EEC vessels with, for the time being, a large majority of French vessels. Activities there are easier to monitor than anywhere else as coastal fisheries are little developed in the area. The final product will consist of a certain number of hypotheses about the planning strategies that could be implemented in the Celtic Sea. The main idea is, firstly, to conduct analytical studies, stock by stock, in order then, to synthesize them into a model integrating the interactions between fleets in relation to their target species. A bio-economical model, deriving from the latter, will enable the... |

Fishing crayfish on the gulf's mudflats is a traditional business practised by 450 boats of 12 to 18 metres in length and employs 2,500 sailors. In the north of the gulf, this activity is exclusive, in the south, immature hake are also caught, because the crayfish areas coincide, in part, with the nurseries of the northern stock of this species. Management of these fisheries, called mixed, of crayfish and hake is one of the greatest problems of the Gulf of Gascony. All assessments tend to show the responsibility of the crayfish boats in the future of the hake stock. The solution is likely to pass through a generalised increase of the 80 mm meshing that would lead, eventually, the hake stock yield to its maximum, but would eliminate a great many trades... |

The principal objective of the work carried out in the deep waters adjoining the island shelf around Martinique between July 1991 and april 1992 was to establish an initial inventory of potentially exploitable deep benthic resources. The cylindrical lobster pot used during fishing experiments allowed the catch of a varied carcinological marine organisms of which six species at least have economic interest : 5 species of shrimp all belonging to the sub-order of Caridea of the Pandalidae family : Plesionika edwardsi, P. (macropoda) polyacanthomerus, P.laevis, Heterocarpus ensifer and H.laevigatus, and one species of prawn of the Nephropidae family : Eunephrops cadenasi. The yields, compared to those of commercial fishermen, were medium or good for Plesionika... |
