This study examined the effects of long-term culture under altered conditions on the Antarctic sea urchin, Sterechinus neumayeri.Sterechinus neumayeri was cultured under the combined environmental stressors of lowered pH (-03 and -05 pH units) and increased temperature (+2 degrees C) for 2years. This time-scale covered two full reproductive cycles in this species and analyses included studies on both adult metabolism and larval development. Adults took at least 6-8months to acclimate to the altered conditions, but beyond this, there was no detectable effect of temperature or pH. Animals were spawned after 6 and 17months exposure to altered conditions, with markedly different outcomes. At 6months, the percentage hatching and larval survival rates were... |

Allometric growth and ontogeny were studied in thick-lipped grey mullet Chelon labrosus reared in mesocosms from 1 to 71 day post hatching (dph). Multivariate allometric analysis of morphometric growth distinguished three distinct developmental stanzas separated by two morphometric metamorphosis lengths (L-m1=4.46 +/- 0.06mm; L-m2= 28.56 +/- 1.04mm). Body mass growth also showed three distinct episodes separated by two inflections, correlated with morpho-functional changes. First episode concerned pre-flexion larvae and ended around 4.5mm-L-T (14-dph), coinciding with estimated L-m1. It was distinguished by reduced growth, but intense morphogenesis and differentiation processes. Organogenesis and allometric changes indicated that development priorities... |

ABSTRACT We investigated the early life growth pattern of pacamã, Lophiosilurus alexandri , a catfish endemic to the rio São Francisco basin, Brazil. Pacamã larvae were kept in a galvanized trough for 29 days after hatching. We collected approximately 10 larvae daily (total number = 285). We obtained from each specimen the total length (independent variable) and 11 other body measurements (dependent variables). We performed linear regressions on the log-transformed data to determine the growth pattern of the body measurements and the respective inflexion point on the growth curves. Except for trunk length, trunk width and yolk sac volume, the remaining body measurements showed a positive allometric growth coefficient up to the respective IP followed by a... |

Two strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were tested as probiotics for rainbow trout fry, during the first month of feeding. Each strain was introduced into separate diets, at the rate of 106 CFU g− 1 and their effects were compared with those of a control diet. Two rearing conditions were simultaneously compared, to test the adaptability of the probiotic treatment. From start feeding onwards, the water supply came from either spring or river, resulting in two different temperature ranges, 11¿11.5 and 7¿8 °C respectively. Growth and development were optimal in spring water, while some delay was observed with colder river water. A slight but significant increase in mortality was also observed in the river group. In all groups, the counts of... |

The cynodontid fish Rhaphiodon vulpinus Agassiz, 1829, known as "peixe-cachorro", is the only species of the family oceurring in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso. The initial development of its larvae was characterized, based on material collected with a 500 µm mesh size plankton-net, in several biotopes of the Pantanal of Barão de Melgaço, State of Mato Grosso, Central Brazil. The analysis was carried out with 72 larvae with standard length (SL) between 4.7 and 13.8 mm. The morphometric measurements varied positively with standard length, and body proportions ranged 8.1-17.8% for head length (HL), 6.2-10.1% for body height, and 63.673.5%, 16.8-21.6%, and 61.8-78.2% SL, respectively for pre-dorsal, pre-pectoral and pre-anal distances. The eye diameter varied... |

The larval development of Cyrtograpsus angulatus Dana, 1851 was studied in laboratory through eggs hatched from ovigerous females collected in mole of Rio Grande, Rio Grande, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Three experiments (A, B, C) were carried out involving 250 larvae, derived from three ovigerous females. The experiments A and B, were carried in a climatically box with temperature among 22 and 25ºC, and salinity among 32 and 34. The experiment C in a room without controlled temperature, in a constant salinity of 30. The larvae were maintained individually and food consisted of rotifers Brachionus plicatillis Müller, 1786 and microscope algae Tetraselmis sp. The development of C. angulatus Dana, 1851 comprises five stages of zoea and one... |
