Importance of potato late blight in Argentina, and the effect of fungicide treatments on yield increments over twenty years 118
Mantecón,Jorge D.
Late blight (Phytophthora infestans) is the most destructive fungal disease of potato (Solanum tuberosum) in Argentina, reducing yields considerably. During the 1986-2005 growing seasons, fungicide treatments to control potato late blight were performed using mancozeb (Dithane M80 WP, Dow AgroScience Argentina, 1986-2005) every 7 d, metalaxil+mancozeb (Ridomil MZ 72 WP, Syngenta Agro Argentina, 1986-1995) every 14 d, and mefenoxam+mancozeb (Ridomil Gold 68 WP, 1996-2005) every 7 d. Blight severity was rated five times each season on the basis of the percentage of diseased foliage caused by late blight. Five visual assessments of infection were used to calcúlate the area under the disease-progress curve (AUDPC, foliar blight x day). Marketable (>60 g)...

Inheritance of resistance to Phytophthora infestans (Peronosporales, Pythiaceae) in a new source of resistance in tomato (Solanum sp. (formerly Lycopersicon sp.), Solanales, Solanaceae) 74
Abreu,Flávia Barbosa; Silva,Derly José Henriques da; Cruz,Cosme Damião; Mizubuti,Eduardo Seiti Gomide.
In Brazil, no commercial tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. formerly Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) varieties are available which are resistant to the late blight, one of the most important tomato diseases, produced by the phytopathogenic oomycete Phytophthora infestans. The wild tomato (Solanum habrochaites Knapp & Spooner, formerly Lycopersicon hirsutum Dunal) shows resistance to P. infestans, because of which we investigated an interspecific cross between S. lycopersicum cv. Santa Clara and S. habrochaites accession BGH 6902 maintained at the Horticultural Germplasm Bank at the Federal University of Viçosa (Banco de Germoplasma de Horticultura (BGH), Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV), Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil) The genitors, F1, F2, BC1 and...

Mating type, mefenoxam sensitivity, and pathotype diversity in Phytophthora infestans isolates from tomato in Brazil 86
Miranda,Bruno Eduardo Cardozo de; Suassuna,Nelson Dias; Reis,Ailton.
The objective of this work was to characterize 79 Phytophthora infestans isolates collected in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) fields, as to mating type, mefenoxam sensitivity, and pathotype composition. The isolates were sampled in 2006 and 2007 in seven Brazilian states as well as in the Distrito Federal. They were characterised as to mating type (n=79), sensitivity to fungicide mefenoxam (n=79), and virulence to three major resistance genes Ph-1, Ph-2, and Ph-3/Ph-4 (n=62). All isolates were of the mating type A1. Resistant isolates were detected in all sampled states, and its average frequency was superior to 50%. No difference was detected in pathotype diversity, neither between subpopulations collected in 2006 and 2007 nor between isolates grouped as...

Phytophthora infestans POPULATION STRUCTURE: A WORLDWIDE SCALE 37
CÁRDENAS,MARTHA; DANIES,GIOVANNA; TABIMA,JAVIER; BERNAL,ADRIANA; RESTREPO,SILVIA.
Phytophthora infestans, the causal agent of late blight disease in potato and other members of the Solanaceae family, is responsible for causing the Irish potato famine and, even today, it causes enormous economic losses all over the world. For the establishment of an adequate pest management strategy, the determination of the pathogen's population structure is required. To characterize P. infestans populations worldwide two allozymes, Gpi (Glucose-6-phospate isomerase) and Pep ( Pep tidase), the RG57 DNA RFLP fingerprinting probe, as well as resistance to the fungicide metalaxyl and mating type, have been used as markers. P. infestans populations in Mexico have been one of the main focuses of research in the population biology of this pathogen because...

Resistencia de clones de papa al tizón tardío (Phytophthora infestans) y su caracterización morfológica en el Valle de Toluca. 32
Rivadeneira Ruales, Jorge Esteban.

Susceptibility of new potato varieties to the potato late blight oomycete Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary in Lithuania 115
Asakaviciute,Rita; Razukas,Almantas; Jundulas,Juozas.
Potato late blight can completely eliminate this crop in developing countries. Therefore, the objetive of this research was to determine the susceptibility of several Lithuanian potato cultivars to late blight. The experimental design was a randomized split-plot, data were subjected to the ANOVA and the Tukey test was used to verify the significance of differences (p<0.05). Late blight infection in potato groups of various growing cycles lenght was different. The intensity of potato blight spread in various earliness potato cultivars depends not only on their earliness, but also on their biological-mathematical models of late blight prognosis.
