A revision of the Peninsular Malaysian species of Beilschmiedia (Lauraceae) is presented with a summary of the taxonomic history of the group, key, full descriptions, distribution maps, conservation assessments, ecological information, ethno-botanical notes and a discussion of morphology. In this treatment, 18 species are recognised; six names are lectotypified (B. insignis, B. kunstleri, B. maingayi, B. membranacea, B. roxburghiana and B. scortechinii) and five are placed into synonymy for the first time; one name is validly published for the first time (B. atra) and one species is recognised and described here as new to science (B. kochummenii). Abstract Leishmaniasis is an endemic disease caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania, which affects around two million people worldwide. One major drawback in the treatment of leishmaniasis is the emergence of resistance to current chemotherapeutics. Medicinal and aromatic plants constitute a major source of natural organic compounds. In this study, the leaf essential oil of Cryptocarya aschersoniana was obtained by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger-type apparatus, and the chemical composition was analyzed by GC-MS and GC-FID. The essential oil of these species was predominantly constituted by monoterpene hydrocarbons (48.8%). ABSTRACT The essential oil composition of the Ocotea bicolor, native plant of Brazil, was studied for the first time. The essential oil of the leaf was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC/MS. The analytical procedure revealed a predominance of sesquiterpenes, δ-cadinene (7.39%), β-sesquiphellandrene (6.67%), β-elemene (5.41%) and α-cadinol (5,23%). The essential oil was submitted to brine shrimp toxicity evaluation, antioxidant and antibacterial tests. The antioxidant activity by the formation of phosphomolybdenum complex method presented positive results. The article has aimed to characterize the essential oil extracted from Ocotea diospyrifolia (Meisn.) Mez. leaves, in terms of its chemical composition and antioxidant, hemolytic, and phytotoxic potentials, as well as its toxicity against Artemia salina. The major constituents identified by CG-MS were d-elemene, spathulenol, and b-atlantol. When screened for potential biological activities, the essential oil presented low toxicity against Artemia salina, and a capacity of lysing red blood cells. Also, the evaluation of its in vitro antioxidant activity, using the phosphomolybdenum method, showed better results when compared to butylhydroxytoluene (BHT) and rutin. Pela análise de 39 locos isoenzimáticos polimórficos, estimaram-se as freqüências alélicas referentes a 267 indivíduos de 12 populações naturais de Cryptocarya aschersoniana provenientes de Florestas de Planalto do estado de São Paulo e sul de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Foram obtidas estimativas das estatísticas F de Wright pelo método da análise da variância para estimação não viesada dos parâmetros correspondentes F=F IT, θ P =F ST e f=F IS. Os valores médios obtidos de F^ resultaram em 0,552 < 0,415 < 0,275; os de θ^P foram 0,395 < 0,335 < 0,279; e os de f^ sendo 0,292 < 0,119 < -0,039. A importância dos frutos de Lauraceae tem sido relatada na dieta de muitas aves, principalmente das famílias Ramphastidae, Cotingidae e Trogonidae. Os objetivos deste estudo foram determinar quais espécies de aves consomem os frutos de Nectandra megapotamica (Spreng.) Mez (Lauraceae) numa área de Floresta Estacional Decidual e, com base na análise de alguns dos componentes qualitativos e quantitativos da dispersão, inferir quais aves podem atuar como dispersores de suas sementes. Embriões zigóticos em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento foram utilizados para avaliar o potencial de germinação e competência embriogênica in vitro. Frutos coletados entre 15 e 360 dias após a antese foram avaliados em relação ao diâmetro (mm), comprimento (mm) e massa fresca (g). Beilschmiedia berteroana ("belloto del sur") is a screrophyllous tree of the family Lauraceae that is endemic to the Central-South region of Chile. It is an endangered species; considered a second priority in the "Extinction Danger" category. This species is known for its timber, fruits and lots of mucilages, also has great potential for its size and ornamental evergreen foliage.
