Airborne laser scanning applied to eucalyptus stand inventory at individual tree level PAB
Cosenza,Diogo Nepomuceno; Soares,Vicente Paulo; Leite,Helio Garcia; Gleriani,José Marinaldo; Amaral,Cibele Hummel do; Gripp Júnior,Joel; Silva,Antonilmar Araújo Lopes da; Soares,Paula; Tomé,Margarida.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the application of airborne laser scanning (ALS) to a large-scale eucalyptus stand inventory by the method of individual trees, as well as to propose a new method to estimate tree diameter as a function of the height obtained from point clouds. The study was carried out in a forest area of 1,681 ha, consisting of eight eucalyptus stands with ages varying from four to seven years. After scanning, tree heights were obtained using the local maxima algorithm, and total wood stock by summing up individual volumes. To determine tree diameters, regressions fit using data measured in the inventory plots were used. The results were compared with the estimates obtained from field sampling. The equation system...

Assessing biomass based on canopy height profiles using airborne laser scanning data in eucalypt plantations Scientia Agricola
Silva,André Gracioso Peres; Görgens,Eric Bastos; Campoe,Otávio Camargo; Alvares,Clayton Alcarde; Stape,José Luiz; Rodriguez,Luiz Carlos Estraviz.
This study aimed to map the stem biomass of an even-aged eucalyptus plantation in southeastern Brazil based on canopy height profile (CHPs) statistics using wall-to-wall discrete return airborne laser scanning (ALS), and compare the results with alternative maps generated by ordinary kriging interpolation from field-derived measurements. The assessment of stem biomass with ALS data was carried out using regression analysis methods. Initially, CHPs were determined to express the distribution of laser point heights in the ALS cloud for each sample plot. The probability density function (pdf) used was the Weibull distribution, with two parameters that in a secondary task, were used as explanatory variables to model stem biomass. ALS metrics such as height...

Assessing understory development in forest plantations using laser imaging detection and ranging (LiDAR) RChHN
HERNÁNDEZ,JAIME; ACUÑA,M. PAZ; CORVALÁN,PATRICIO; SIMONETTI,JAVIER A.
Forestry plantations are expected to be managed in ways to conserve biodiversity while producing goods and services. This goal implies a significant challenge as plantations tend to reduce species richness. The presence of well developed understory enhances the value of plantations as habitat for native fauna. Here, we develop a straightforward method to assess the availability of understory in forestry stands using laser imaging detection and ranging (LiDAR) data and aerial RGB high resolution images. Based on field and airborne acquired data for Pinus radiata stands in central Chile, the digital crown model (DCM), derived from the subtraction of the digital terrain model (DTM) from the digital surface model (DSM) is a more reliable predictor of...

Monitoring the understory in eucalyptus plantations using airborne laser scanning Scientia Agricola
Melo,Alessandra Morais; Reis,Cristiano Rodrigues; Martins,Bruno Ferraz; Penido,Tamires Mousslech Andrade; Rodriguez,Luiz Carlos Estraviz; Gorgens,Eric Bastos.
ABSTRACT In eucalyptus plantations, the presence of understory increases the risk of fires, acts as an obstacle to forest operations, and leads to yield losses due to competition. The objective of this study was to develop an approach to discriminate the presence or absence of understory in eucalyptus plantations based on airborne laser scanning surveys. The bimodal canopy height profile was modeled by two Weibull density functions: one to model the canopy, and other to model the understory. The parameters used as predictor in the logistic model successfully discriminated the presence or absence of understory. The logistic model composed by ℽ canopy, ℽ understory, and ℽ understory showed higher values of accuracy (0.96) and kappa (0.92), which means an...

The DIARS toolbox: a spatially explicit approach to monitor alien plant invasions through remote sensing ArchiMer

The synergies between remote sensing technologies and ecological research have opened new avenues for the study of alien plant invasions worldwide. Such scientific advances have greatly improved our capacity to issue warnings, develop early-response systems and assess the impacts of alien plant invasions on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Hitherto, practical applications of remote sensing approaches to support nature conservation actions are lagging far behind scientific advances. Yet, for some of these technologies, knowledge transfer is difficult due to the complexity of the different data handling procedures and the huge amounts of data it involves per spatial unit. In this context, the next logical step is to develop clear guidelines for the...

Using airborne laser altimetry to estimate Sabellaria alveolata (Polychaeta: Sabellariidae) reefs volume in tidal flat environments ArchiMer
Noernberg, Mauricio Almeida; Fournier, Jerome; Dubois, Stanislas; Populus, Jacques.
This study has exploited aerial photographs and LiDAR digital elevation model to quantify intertidal complex landforms volume. A first volume estimation of the main sabellariid polychaete reef complex of the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel - France is presented. The Sabellaria alveolata is an engineering species that heavily modifies its environment. This gregarious tube-building annelid forms dense and solid reefs of bioclastic coarse sand which can reach several km(2). Since 1970 a very strong decline of reefs has been observed. The authorities have curbed fishing activities without any noticeable changes in reef health status. The S. alveolata reef volume is estimated to be 132 048 m(3) (96 301 m(3) for Sainte-Anne reef and 35 747 m(3) for Champeaux reef)....
