Distribution and habitat ecology of the sorediate species of Menegazzia (Parmeliaceae, lichenized Ascomycota) in Chile RChHN

ABSTRACT The taxonomy and ecology of the sorediate species of Menegazzia from the southernmost regions of Chile and Argentina and the South Atlantic Islands was recently published, only with sporadic reports from the more northern regions. In the present work the distribution patterns and habitat ecology of the sorediate species are discussed, with emphasis on the area north of 48º S. Eleven species are treated. Menegazzia subpertusa, an epiphyte of sclerophyll scrubs, is recorded from South America for the first time (Chile and Argentina). Diversity and distribution of lichens on mortar and concrete in Buenos Aires province, Argentina Darwiniana

Lichens can affect buildings and monuments inducing a negative aesthetical impact as well as causing deterioration through mechanical and chemical processes. Given that cement mortars and concrete are the primary 20th century building materials worldwide, it is important to study lichens growing on this substrate. In a survey of different localities of Buenos Aires Province, 33 species growing on mortars and concrete were collected and identified utilizing morphological and chemical studies. Results showed that Staurothele frustulenta is a new record for Argentina, and Acarospora subcastanea is a new record for Buenos Aires Province. Diversity and endemism in the pyrenocarpous lichen families Pyrenulaceae and Trypetheliaceae in the Malesian flora region Naturalis

Species diversity and local endemism is investigated in the pyrenocarpous lichen families Pyrenulaceae and Trypetheliaceae in the Malesian flora region and some peripheral regions. Species numbers in both families seem highest in Australia and Papua New Guinea, but some potentially rich regions are much undercollected. The numbers of local endemics are also highest in these areas, at least in the Pyrenulaceae, and remarkably high for lichens. Even more surprising is the near absence of species confined to two adjacent regions.

EPIPHYTIC LICHENS OF CONGUILLÍO NATIONAL PARK, SOUTHERN CHILE Gayana Botánica

One hundred and thirty eight epiphytic lichen species in 40 genera, are recorded from Conguillio National Park (38°30'-38°50' S; 71°30'-71°55' W), with predominancy of typically southern South American species. Lichen diversity is high, about 9 % of the lichen mycobiota from Chile, due mainly to species of the genera Bunodophoron, Menegazzia, Nephroma,, Pannaria, Protousnea and Pseudocyphellaria. Levels of endemism are rather high (nearly 40 %); also austral and cosmopolitan species, about 19 % and 16 % respectively, are the most representative biogeographical elements in the Park.

First record of the genus Everniastrum Sipman (Parmeliaceae, lichenized Ascomycota) for the state of Paraná, Brazil Acta Botanica

Everniastrum is a pantropical genus that has been recorded for the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul. In this work, we present the first records of E. cirrhatum and E. vexans for the Brazilian state of Paraná. Comments and illustrations are provided.

Lichenicolous fungi in Iğdır province, Turkey Acta Botanica

As a result of lichenological exploration in the province of Iğdır, Turkey, forty species of lichenicolous fungi belonging to eighteen genera were identified on twenty-seven different lichenized fungi. Four lichenicolous fungi-Arthonia protoparmeliopsidis, Lichenostigma radicans, L. subradians and Sclerococcum sphaerale-represent new records for Turkey. In addition, A. protoparmeliopsidis is new to Asia and Gemmaspora lecanorae was found for the second time on Aspicilia sp. Geographical distributions are also presented.

Líquens e outros organismos epifílicos em Conchocarpus macrophyllus J.C. Mikan no Parque Estadual do Rio Doce, Minas Gerais, Brasil Rev. Bras. Bot.

Organismos epifílicos em C. macrophyllus foram encontrados em duas parcelas amostradas em julho de 1996, em duas áreas com diferentes graus de perturbação pelo fogo, no Parque Estadual do Rio Doce, MG. Quatorze espécies epifílicas foram encontradas incluindo: 11 líquens, uma alga, uma hepática e um fungo. Os líquens totalizaram 81,8% das espécies na área menos perturbada e 72,7% na mais perturbada. A espécie mais abundante foi Porina epiphylla, que ocorreu em 80,8% dos forófitos da primeira área e em 97% dos forófitos da segunda. New distributional records for Chilean bryophyte and lichen flora Gayana Botánica

Ten new distributional records to the Chilean bryo-lichenic flora are reported. Three species and a subspecies are new to the flora of the province of Chiloé, five species are new from the Los Lagos Region and one species is new to mainland Chile. The specimens were collected in peatlands (Sphagnum bogs) and swamp forests of Tepualia stipularis in Isla Grande de Chiloé (Chile) (41°- 43° S; 74°-73° W). Diagnostic characters, chemistry (only lichens), habitats preferences and distribution are provided. The national ranges of two species are expanded.

New records in the lichen family Verrucariaceae (Ascomycota) from Argentina Boletín de la Sociedad

Four interesting lichens belonging to Catapyrenium, Placidium and Placopyrenium genera (Verrucariaceae) were collected for the first time in Argentina. Catapyrenium exaratum was only reported from Chile and Perú. Placidium acarosporoides was previously known from North America, Chile and South Africa. Placidium pilosellum, a widespread and common species, but little known in South America. Finally, Placopyrenium bucekii, a mediterranean-submediterranean lichen, represents a new record from South America. For these taxa we provide a brief description with emphasis on the ecological aspects and distribution maps.

The present study describes the species of Canomaculina Elix & Hale and Parmotrema A. Massal. occuring in Curitiba, Paraná. Identification keys, descriptions of the species, and comments are presented. Canomaculina conferenda (Hale) Elix, Canomaculina pilosa (Stizemb.) Elix & Hale, Parmotrema catarinae Hale and Parmotrema eciliatum (Nyl.) Hale are reported for the first time to Paraná State.

Tropical urban lichens: observations from Singapore Naturalis

The known lichen diversity of Singapore, 296 species, is comparable with temperate lowland areas, but the taxa involved are different, even at high taxonomic levels: the commonest orders are Arthoniales and Graphidales instead of Lecanorales. Epiphytic species dominate, while saxicolous and terrestrial species are rare. Comparison with pre-2000 records and non-urbanized areas suggests a decrease in forest lichens, cyanophilous macrolichens, and the nitrophilous family Physciaceae.

Vitality of lichens under different light climates in an Araucaria forest (Pró-Mata RS, South Brazil) as determined by chlorophyll fluorescence Acta Botanica

ABSTRACT The vitality of 64 lichen species (107 individual lichen thalli) growing under different light climates in an Araucaria forest in South Brazil was analyzed by chlorophyll fluorescence. Study sites were grouped according to their local light availability under full sunlight (about 2200 µmol m-2 s-1): 1 = low light, up to 20 µmol m-2 s-1; 2 = medium light, 20 to 100 µmol m-2 s-1; and 3 = high light, more than 100 µmol m-2 s-1. Maximum quantum yield of photosystem II, as shown by Fv/Fm of dark-adapted samples, was mainly between 0.3 and 0.7, with extremes of below 0.1 and up to 0.85.
