Biomass accumulation-influencing factors in microalgae farms AGRIAMBI
Pedruzi,Gerson O. L.; Amorim,Matheus L.; Santos,Raquel R.; Martins,Márcio A.; Vaz,Marcelo G. M. V..
ABSTRACT Due to the emergence of large microalgae farms and increased competition in this sector, the search for higher productivity is common. One way to achieve this goal in microalgae production is to optimize the factors that influence their growth during the cultivation stage to increase the accumulation of bio-compounds of interest. In this stage, the factors that most influence are: nutrition, gas diffusion, light intensity and quality and, finally, stirring, which directly affects all other factors. Thus, a review and an evaluation of the influence and importance of stirring were performed in the present study. The nutrients that most influence biomass accumulation are carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, but their proportion is directly related to the...

Effect of photoperiod length and light intensity on some welfare criteria, carcass, and meat quality characteristics in broilers R. Bras. Zootec.
Fidan,Evrim Dereli; Nazlıgül,Ahmet; Türkyılmaz,Mehmet Kenan; Aypak,Serap Ünübol; Kilimci,Figen Sevil; Karaarslan,Solmaz; Kaya,Mehmet.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of photoperiod length and light intensity on leg and eye health, tonic immobility, some blood parameters, carcass, and meat quality characteristics in broilers. A total of 272 one-day-old male broiler chicks (Ross 308) were randomly assigned to four treatment groups based on the photoperiod length (23L:1D or increasing duration of light) and light intensity (20 lux vs. dim light) with four replicates. In this study, photoperiod lenght had no effect on incidence of foot pad and hock burn. On the other hand, the effect of photoperiod lenght had significant influence on the gait score. The incidences of gait score (3 + 4 + 5) in bright and dim light groups was found as 21.4 and 41.0% in...

Impact of different light sources on broiler rearing environment REA
Lima,Karla A. O.; Nääs,Irenilza de A.; Garcia,Rodrigo G.; Borille,Rodrigo; Caldara,Fabiana R..
Broiler production is highly dependent on the use of artificial light. The light source may affect the effectiveness of housing conditions due to increasing ambient temperature and concentration of noxious gases. This research aimed to evaluate the effects of different bulb types on the thermal, aerial, and acoustic environment of broiler aviaries. The experiment was carried out at a commercial broiler farm in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. Three aviaries were used, and two flocks of male broilers from Cobb® genetic strain were reared from the first day to slaughter. Each aviary was equipped with a different light source, comprising the adopted treatments (A1 - incandescent light bulb, control; A2 - sodium vapor light bulb; A3 - fluorescent...

Lighting in the shackling area: conciliating broiler welfare with labor comfort Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Adamczuk,GO; Trentin,MG; Lima,JD de; Motta,J; Cantelli,RP.
The objective of this study was to investigate if blue lighting could reduce broiler stress and comply with legal labor comfort requirements in a new shackling area of a middle-size processing plant. In this study, the old shackling area was compared with the new area, where a blue lighting system was designed and implemented according to the regulations. The old and new areas were video- and audio-recorded during the shackling of 33,850 broilers in each area. Data were statistically analyzed using the non-parametric test of Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney (w test). The results indicated 56% reduction in wing-flapping and 3.2% noise reduction in the new area. These results were obtained by increasing 119% lighting at the work stations in the shackling area, allowing...

Limestone particle size and artificial light for laying hens in the second laying cycle R. Bras. Zootec.
Oliveira,Alexsandro Nunes de; Freitas,Ednardo Rodrigues; Filgueira,Thales Marcel Bezerra; Cruz,Carlos Eduardo Braga; Nascimento,Germano Augusto Jerônimo do.
The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of limestone particle size and the use of artificial light for laying hens in the second laying cycle. We used 240 Hisex White laying hens at 82 weeks of age in a completely randomized design in a 5 × 2 factorial arrangement, resulting in 10 treatments with 4 replicates of 6 birds. The variables were the five particle sizes obtained by increasing the proportion of thick limestone (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) compared with thin limestone and two lighting programs: with and without artificial light. Limestone particle size and light did not affect performance or egg quality. However, there were changes in bird feeding schedule throughout the day as a response to the lighting program. Bone quality, density and...

Streetlights attract a broad array of beetle species Rev. Bras. entomol.
Medeiros,Bruno Augusto Souza de; Barghini,Alessandro; Vanin,Sergio Antonio.
ABSTRACT Light pollution on ecosystems is a growing concern, and knowledge about the effects of outdoor lighting on organisms is crucial to understand and mitigate impacts. Here we build up on a previous study to characterize the diversity of all beetles attracted to different commonly used streetlight set ups. We find that lights attract beetles from a broad taxonomic and ecological spectrum. Lights that attract a large number of insect individuals draw an equally high number of insect species. While there is some evidence for heterogeneity in the preference of beetle species to different kinds of light, all species are more attracted to some light radiating ultraviolet. The functional basis of this heterogeneity, however, is not clear. Our results...
