Crop weeds are the main problem in agriculture, causing a worldwide annual loss of about US$95 billion. The principal method for control is the use of synthetic herbicides. The continued use of these products increases crop costs, reduces crop quality, and leaves toxic residues in the environment, which are a threat to human and livestock health. Therefore, there is a demand for environmentally friendly methods of weed control. The use of allelopathic compounds from crop residues is an alternative. Bioconversion of R-(+)-limonene to perillic acid by the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica BJM

Perillyl derivatives are increasingly important due to their flavouring and antimicrobial properties as well as their potential as anticancer agents. These terpenoid species, which are present in limited amounts in plants, may be obtained via bioconversion of selected monoterpene hydrocarbons. In this study, seventeen yeast strains were screened for their ability to oxidize the exocyclic methyl group in the p-menthene moiety of limonene into perillic acid. Of the yeast tested, the highest efficiency was observed for Yarrowia lipolytica ATCC 18942. Biotransformation of the monoterpene, limonene, by Fusarium verticilloides BABT

Limonene, the main constituent of the orange peel oil, was used as substrate for the biotransformation by the fungus Fusarium verticilloides. A hydroxylated derivative of limonene was isolated from the culture broth and characterized by spectroscopic methods. It was identified as perillyl alcohol, an important anti-cancer compound.

ABSTRACT Tooth decay is a major public health problem which affects a large number of people in several countries. Even though more than 700 bacterial species have been detected in the oral cavity, Streptococcus and Lactobacillus stand out as the genera that cause tooth decay and other periodontal diseases. Many Gram-negative pathogens have the ability to produce N-acylhomoserine lactones (AHLs) as signal molecules for quorum sensing (QS). This cell-cell communication system allows them to coordinate gene expression and regulate virulence. Strategies to inhibit QS are promising for the control of infectious diseases or antibiotic resistant bacterial pathogens. Citrus aurantium L., commonly known as bitter orange, is widely used in folk medicine, but there is little data in the literature about the effects on pregnancy. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of essential oil obtained from fruits of Citrus aurantium on the maternal reproductive outcome and fetal anomaly incidence in rats. The biooxidation of limonene by an Aspergillus strain resulted in the production of perillyl alcohol and short chain fatty acids. Addition of ketoconazole, a known inhibitor of cytochrome P450 oxydase, eliminated the production of free acids, but did not affect biotransformation to perillyl alcohol.

Isolation and screening of d-limonene-resistant microorganisms BJM

This study reports the isolation of microorganisms that are resistant to environment containing limonene, the most important residue in the citrus industry. For the isolation, samples collected from strategic places of a citrus processing plant (yellow water, entrance and exit of the bagasse tank, effluent and deteriorated fruits found in bins, machine straps, fruit washers and plant floor), some citrus fruit and mint from local market were used. The samples were incubated in rotary shaker at 30ºC/150rpm for 48h or 7 days in YM medium containing 0.1% limonene. Isolation and screening of microorganisms with potential for biotransformation of terpenic substrates BABT

The objective of the present work was to isolate and select strains with potential to perform the biotransformation of terpenic substrates. Microorganisms obtained from a collection culture and also isolated from a natural source of terpene substrate were tested. Seventeen strains were selected by their resistance to terpenes in potato dextrose agar containing up to 1% of limonene or α-pinene and β-pinene (1:1). Subsequently, 10 strains were selected by their capacity of using these terpenes as sole carbon source in a mineral medium. The biotransformation capacity of these strains was tested and the products obtained were identified by GC-MS.

Caraway is one of the most important medicinal plant cultivated in Poland. Caraway essential oil performs medium antimicrobial activity, although it inhibits growth of many bacteria and fungi. The aim of the study was to evaluate microbiological activity of caraway oil obtained from fruit originated from different genotypes and investigate the correlation between this activity and essential oil content and its main components content.
