The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationships between soil attributes and environmental covariates in a tropical hillslope environment on a regional scale to estimate spatial distribution of soil attributes and identify statistical and geostatistical techniques that could represent the variation of the soil attributes. The studywas performed in Bom Jardim County, Brazil, and covered an area of 390 km2 with a soil database of 208 sample points distributed in six depth layers (0.53 pts/km2). The study used 18 environmental covariates derived from DEM and satellite imagery. The models evaluated were linear regression, regression trees and ordinary and regression kriging. An exploratory analysis showed that DEM, NDVI, MRVBF, MSP, b3/b2, b5/b7,... |

The effect of increasing seed borne incidence levels (0, 3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 %) of Bipolaris oryzae on brown spot epidemics and crop performance was studied in eleven field trials. These trials were conducted at two sites (Bagé ? BA and Cachoeirinha ? CA) in the major rice-growing region of Brazil over three seasons (2008 to 2010). Disease variables assessed over time were disease incidence (INC, %) on leaves prior to flowering, and disease severity (SEV, %) on flag leaves after flowering. Kernel infection (KI, %) by B. oryzae was assessed after harvest. Crop-related variables such as plant population density (PD) and yield (YLD) were also assessed. In only three trials, all in the 2009/10 season, which had well above-normal rainfall in the early season,... |

Different polynomial functions were tested for mean trajectory modeling with different residual variance structures. A total of 15,148 weight records of 3,115 Nellore Mocho cattle with ages between 1 and 660 days, raised in northern Brazil. First, the mean trajectory of cattle growth curve was fitted by a fixed regression using orthogonal polynomials with orders ranging from two to seven. Analyses were performed using the least-squares method, disregarding animal and/ or maternal random effects. Then, the best model was evaluated using different residual variance structures and homogeneous and heterogeneous classes. We considered as fixed effects those of groups of contemporary and of dam age at birth (as linear and quadratic covariate). The random model... |

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate inbreeding depression in Holstein cows in Brazil, considering their 305-day milk production (MP), age of first calving (AFC), and calving interval (CI). The effects of inbreeding depression on the traits were determined using four regression models (linear, quadratic, exponential, and Michaelis-Menten) about the errors generated by the animal model. The linear model was significant for CI, and the quadratic model was significant for CI and AFC. The Michaelis-Menten and exponential models were significant for MP, AFC, and CI. Inbreeding depression affected MP and CI. Cows with inbreeding coefficient of 15% produced approximately 260 kg less milk than non-inbred cows. A 1% increase in the inbreeding level... |

The objective of this study was to formulate a mathematical model to estimate digestible energy in animal feeds for tilapia. Literature results were used of the proximate composition of crude protein, ether extract, mineral matter and gross energy, as well as digestible energy obtained in biological assays. The data were subjected to stepwise backward multiple linear regression. Path analysis was performed to measure the direct and indirect effects of each independent variable on the dependent one. To validate the model, data from independent studies and values obtained from a digestibility trial with juvenile Nile tilapia testing five meat and bone meals (MBM) were used, using the Guelph feces collecting system and chromium oxide (III) as an indicator.... |

ABSTRACT The effect of environmental variables on the plant species distribution in the Atlantic Forest raises the interest of researchers, but few studies, mainly at local scales, analyzed the influence of spatial factors on the environment and species distribution. Linear models and spatial correlograms were used to evaluate whether environment and space may predict variations in species composition of trees and shrubs in a Subtropical Rainforest remnant. The study area was divided in 25 plots of 400 m², systematically distributed, where individuals with DBH ≥ 5 cm were measured. Elevation and slope were the most important predictors of the floristic variations, but space, generally neglected in researches on South American's vegetation, had a relevant... |

In spite of the great homogeneity found in the morphological characteristics of Oxisols, there is great chemical diversity in subsurface layers of these soils. Studies indicate that crop yield presents significant correlation with the chemical attributes of the subsurface, which, are more stable than attributes found in the plough layer, subject to greater alterations as a consequence of agricultural exploration. This work evaluated the effects of subsurface chemical attributes of Oxisols of the South Central region of Brazil, on the yield of sugarcane clones and of variety RB72454, during the first, second and third cropping cycles. Productivity data were obtained between 1993 and 1998. Soils were characterized in terms of their mechanical analysis and... |

Abstract: The quantification of soil organic carbon (SOC) is essential to agriculture and sustainable use of the land. However, there are difficulties to estimate it in large areas due to high cost of soil sample extraction, and laboratory preparations. There are approaches that may facilitate the estimation of SOC, such as the use of satellite imagery and the application of statistical models based on the spectral bands of the satellite under study. In July of 2017, this study proposed a prediction statistical model from optical-orbital data of the series Landsat, OLI sensor for estimating SOC content. |
