Consumption of Home-Delivered Foods: Results from an Exploratory Survey AgEcon
Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr.; Farooq, Zafar.
This study examines the effect of various factors on the decision to consume home-delivered foods. The results of the study suggest that the decision to order food for home delivery is determined by gender, price consciousness, number of adults and children in the household, employment status, education level, ownership of microwave oven and, to some extent race, age and income. Specifically, the results suggest that less price-conscious, employed, higher-educated, white males within the 25-34 age group, in a household with a microwave oven, with smaller number of adults, but with children are more likely to purchase home-delivered food that others.

Farm level adoption decisions of soil and water management technologies in semi-arid Eastern Kenya AgEcon
Bett, Charles.
In this paper the conceptual framework of individual farmers' adoption decisions of new agricultural technologies is used to identify factors that influence adoption modified fanya juu terraces in semi-arid eastern Kenya. The adoption decision model was specified using farm and farmers' characteristics and technology characteristics though likely to influence farmers' adoption behaviour. To test intensity of adoption a Torbit model was specified and estimated. Results of logit regression analysis reveal that access to markets, education, costs, technology attributes, labour, credit and risk preferences significantly influenced adoption decisions. Results from the estimated intensity of adoption model (tobit) show that variation in the proportion of land...

Fresh Meat and Traceability Labelling: Who Cares? AgEcon
Stranieri, Stefanella; Banterle, Alessandro.
Within the framework of European food safety measures, Reg. 1760/2000 and 1825/2000 have introduced mandatory traceability and relevant labelling into the beef sector. The paper analyses whether information on meat labels can be considered a useful instrument for consumers, facilitating the verification of quality. The purpose of the paper is, first, to evaluate whether meat information is used during food purchase, and secondly, by focussing on specific meat information, to assess consumer interest in some mandatory and voluntary information cues and to identify the determinants affecting the use of such cues. Data were collected by a telephone questionnaire in a survey conducted in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. The sample consisted of 1,025...

HANDLER REACTIONS TO POTENTIAL COMPULSORY COUNTRY-OF-ORIGIN LABELING OF FRESH OR FROZEN BEEF AgEcon
Schupp, Alvin R.; Gillespie, Jeffrey M..
Interest in mandatory country-of-origin labeling of fresh meats exists at both the state and national levels. A sample of beef handling firms in Louisiana (processors, retailers and restaurants) was surveyed by telephone to identify the characteristics of these firms that would help explain their decision to support or reject the law. A factor supporting the label use was a belief that the label is valuable to buyers. Negative factors were that the firm is a restaurant, is part of a chain or franchise, or has experience handling imported beef, and the belief that labeling merely reflects more government interference in free trade.

INFORMATION AND THE ADOPTION OF PRECISION FARMING TECHNOLOGIES AgEcon
McBride, William D.; Daberkow, Stan G..
Precision farming technologies have been commercially available since the early 1990s, but the pace of adoption among U.S. farmers has been modest. This study examines the relationship between the adoption of diagnostic and application techniques of precision farming and sources of information available to farmers about precision farming. The model used in the analysis accounts for sources of self-selection in the adoption process that could bias the results. Results indicate interpersonal information sources have increased adoption relative to information from the mass media, and the private sector has been the driving force behind the diffusion of precision farming. Information from crop consultants and input suppliers has had the greatest impact on the...

Recent Changes in Milk Marketing in the UK: The Farmers' Perspective AgEcon
Franks, J.R..
In 1994 Milk Marketing Boards in the UK were disbanded, their role as milk purchasers was taken by more than 100 licensed organisations. It is shown that this change resulted in an increase in the variation between producers' milk price. The majority of dairy farmers sold milk through the Milk Marketing Boards designated successor; a farmer owned co-operative called Milk Marque. In doing so they accepted a 1.5 ppl milk price penalty. It is shown farmers who adopted this strategy did so because of the perceived financial security of Milk Marque, goodwill and support for the principle of co-operative marketing and in an attempt to protect the milk price over the longer-term. The marketing environment changed once again in 2000 when Milk Marque was disbanded....

Socioeconomic Profiles of Early Adopters of Precision Agriculture Technologies AgEcon
Daberkow, Stan G.; McBride, William D..
Corn producers are the largest users of cropland and agrichemicals in U.S. agriculture, and represent a major market for precision agriculture technologies. Based on a USDA survey of 950 corn-producing farms, approximately 9% utilized some aspect of precision agriculture for corn production in 1996. A logit analysis indicated that farmers were more likely to adopt precision technologies if they farmed a large number of corn acres, earned a sizable farm income, and had high expected corn yields. The probability of adoption was also higher for farm operators using a computerized farm record system, who were less than 50 years of age, and who relied on crop consultants for information on precision agriculture.

SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS AND THE STRUCTURAL CHANGE OF DIETARY INTAKE IN HUNGARY: A PANNEL STUDY AgEcon
Bakucs, Lajos Zoltan; Ferto, Imre; Marreiros, Cristina.
Typically, big changes in the economic system lead to alterations on the disposable income of families and thus on their spending for different type of products, including food. These may imply, in the long run, a structural modification of the quality of diet of the population. After the fall of the socialist system, in the past two decades Central and Eastern European countries, including Hungary, went through a profound, and sometimes difficult transition of their political and economic systems, shifting from a centralized planned economy to an open market economy, and more importantly, the European Union integration. Economic change in lower-income and transitional economies of the world appears to coincide with increasing rapid social change. With...

THE INFLUENCE OF THE LOCAL ECONOMY AND THE WILLINGNESS TO MOVE ON HUMAN CAPITAL ACCUMULATION IN CENTRAL APPALACHIA AgEcon
Broomhall, David.
This study uses logit analysis to examine the influence of the perception of local economic opportunities and the willingness to move on the educational aspirations of rural high-school-aged youths. Those youths who are more willing to move have a greater career opportunity set and a string incentive to achieve in school, since education allows them to compete for jobs elsewhere. A low willingness to move, coupled with a low perception of local job opportunities, translates into a low expected return to education, which reduces the incentive to achieve in school.
