Benefit Evaluation of the Country of Origin Labeling in Taiwan: Results from Auction Experiment AgEcon
Chern, Wen S.; Chang, Chun-Yu.
This research is aimed at investigating the consumer’s preference for food produced in Taiwan and the economic benefits for the country of origin labeling. The study uses both experimental auction and contingent valuation method (CVM) to investigate factors that affect the consumer’s willingness to pay (WTP) for products under country-of-origin labeling (COOL). Experimental auctions of Taiwan and China preserved olives as well as Taiwan, China and Vietnam oolong teas were conducted using the Vickrey’s second price sealed bid auction. For CVM, the study used the double-bounded dichotomous choice method in which we started assuming the same base price for all products in the first question and then varied the prices in the second CV question. The products...

CONSUMER CHARACTERISTICS ASSOCIATED WITH FOOD PRICES AgEcon
Mandleni, B.; Anim, F.D.K..
To keep up with the recent trends in consumer demand for food products, an understanding of the associated customer characteristics is needed. This study identifies significant characteristics and factors of households who are likely to purchase basic household food when prices are high. The analysis was performed using logit model. The results of the study imply that the following households are more likely to purchase foods when prices are high: those with large sizes of land for farming and for home garden, those who frequently purchase the basic food stuffs, those who receive some advice on prices of food, and those with large household sizes. Educated females with information sources on food prices, and those household who stay far away from the...

Consumers’ Willingness to Pay for Bacteriophage Technology Treated Fresh Produce AgEcon
Yeboah, Osei-Agyeman; Goktepe, Ipek; Naanwaab, Cephas B.; Kyei, Foster Ofori.
The United States is remarkably safe, when it comes to food supply. Nevertheless, food can become contaminated with a variety of germs. According to reports by a food safety group of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food-borne illness caused by bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella not only take a huge toll on American consumers’ health but they cost the United States an estimated $152 billion annually in health care and other losses. To curb this increasing phenomenon, there has been a reintroduction of bacteriophage in the treatment of bacteria on raw foods. This study utilized a survey questionnaire administered by telephone to consumers in four different states; Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. In this study, as...

Determinants of oil palm smallholder farmers’ adaptation strategy to climate change in Bengkulu, Indonesia Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Irawan,Andi; Syakir,Muhammad.
Abstract Bengkulu is one of 10 provinces in Indonesia, which became a center of oil palm production. The aim of the study is to define how the determinant factors influence the oil palm smallholder farmer’s adaptation strategies on climate change in Bengkulu Province, Indonesia. Binary logistic regression method was employed to clarify the independent variables that influence farmers’ strategy adapted to climate change. Farmer experience and their household expenditure have the positive and significant effect on cropping diversification, while oil palm price has a positive influence in using land clearing without slash and burning. The factors that most influence the farmers' adaptation to climate change are farmer’s cooperation membership and membership...

Economic factors affecting obesity: an application in Italy AgEcon
Cavaliere, Alessia; Banterle, Alessandro.
The World Health Organization has stated that obesity is spreading around the world like a “global epidemic”. In 2004 the percentage of obese people in the Italian population was 9%, but the trend s increasing in recent years. Focusing on this country, the purpose of the paper is to analyze the socio-economic variables affecting obesity by means of a survey conducted in a consumer sample. Our analysis is based on a survey conducted in Italy, and the sample was composed of 999 consumers. We used a binary logit model and the dependent variable is body mass index (BMI), expressed in a dichotomic way (seriously overweight and obese, value 1, and normal weight, value 0). The results show that the condition of the seriously overweight and obese increases...

EINE LOGIT-ANALYSE ZUR DIFFERENZIERUNG VON KÄUFERN UND NICHT-KÄUFERN VON SCHULMILCH IN DEUTSCHLAND AgEcon
Peter, Guenter; Salamon, Petra; Christoph, Inken B.; Weible, Daniela; Burgelt, Doreen.

Ramos, Almudena Gomez; Muniz, Ignacio Atance; Apezteguia, Belen Iraizoz.

Generalized lineal models for the analysis of binary data from propagation experiments of Brazilian orchids BABT
Mora,Freddy; Gonçalves,Letícia de Menezes; Scapim,Carlos Alberto; Martins,Elias Nunes; Machado,Maria de Fátima Pires da Silva.
This study aimed at applying the generalized linear models (GLM) for the analysis of a germination experiment of Cattleya bicolor in which the response variable was binary. The purpose of this experiment was to assess the effects of the storage temperatures and culture mediums on the seed viability. The analyses of variance was also carried out either with or without the data transformation. All the statistical approaches indicated the importance of the storage temperature on the seed viability. But, the culture media and interaction effects were significant only by the GLM. Based on the GLM, the seeds stored at 10°C increased viability, in which the coconut medium achieved the best performance. The results emphasized the importance of adopting the GLM to...

Carvalho, Flavia Giolo de; Rezende, Eliane Garcia; Rezende, Marcelo Lacerda de.
The objective of this work was to study the consumer habits of street market customers in the municipality of Alfenas, Minas Gerais state. More specifically, the aim was to characterize the customers according to their social and economic status and purchasing habits and to identify the variables that determine their attendance in the street market. Cluster analysis was done to group customers with similar characteristics and habits. The Logit model was then used to test the effects of the variables on the customer’s attendance. The results indicate that the street market presents a heterogeneous public as far as age, per capita income, schooling and occupation are concerned; it does present, however, similarities as to the reason for preferring the street...

Livelihood Dependence on Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) - A Study of Jenukuruba Tribes in South India AgEcon
Ravi, Pemmanda C.; Mahadevaiah, G.S.; Muthamma, M.D..
An understanding of the nature and extent of households' dependence on NTFPs can facilitate the policy decisions for development and welfare of tribals vis-a-vis conservation and management of forest wealth. The present study provides some insight regarding the forest dependence of Jenukurubas, a sect of primitive tribe, living in and around the protected forests of Heggada Devanakote region in South India. The analysis of socio-economic characteristics of households using Logit regression shows that wage employment, land ownership and income from agriculture lowered the probability that a household would go for NTFPs collection. Joint family system and large family size would increase the probability of collection of NTFPs by tribal households. The study...

Organic Food Consumption Patterns in France AgEcon
Hassan, Daniel; Monier-Dilhan, Sylvette; Nichele, Veronique; Simioni, Michel.
This research addresses two important issues for the future expansion of organic consumption in France. The first one is related to knowing whether the organic choice is a permanent feature of consumer’s attitude or not: Do organic buyers occasionally pick one organic product or do they choose organic for “several” categories? The second issue concerns the impact of prices on buying organics which is revisited, distinguishing between capturing new consumers and increasing the demand coming from people already involved in organic markets. These questions are examined using the market basket approach; the price issue requires further estimations of demand models. The study relies on two staple food products, eggs and milk. The findings are : (i) choosing...

Succession Decisions in U.S. Family Farm Businesses AgEcon
Mishra, Ashok K.; El-Osta, Hisham S.; Shaik, Saleem.
Farm transfer or succession by the “next generation” holds a place of central importance in the determination of industry structure and total number of farmers and has profound implications for farm families. The family farm sector relies heavily on intergenerational succession. Succession and retirement are linked and reflective of the life cycles of the farm household and the farm business. A large farm-level data set and a logistic regression model were used to examine the determinants of farm succession decisions in the United States, with special emphasis given to the treatment of endogenous wealth and farm size variables. Results point to the importance of farmer’s age, educational attainment of farm operators, off-farm work by the operator or...

Walnut Preferences in Spain: Is the Spanish Consumer Ready for New Varieties? AgEcon
Camarena-Gomez, Dena M.; Sanjuan, Ana Isabel.
Stated consumer preferences for walnuts in Spain are investigated by means of a choice experiment. Conditional heterogeneity is explored, assuming two possible sources: how often walnuts are consumed and how driven by health and nutrition attitudes or convenience the consumer is. In particular, the possibilities for a mostly unknown variety in the Spanish market are investigated. Specific guidelines for the distribution and commercialisation of walnuts are provided.
