A new ctenochasmatid pterosaur from the Lower Cretaceous, western Liaoning, China Anais da ABC (AABC)

A nearly complete skull of a new ctenochasmatid pterosaur, Pterofiltus qiui gen. et sp. nov., from the Lower Cretaceous deposits of Liaoning, China, is described here. The specimen (IVPP V12339), was collected from the shale of the lower Yixian Formation (125 Ma) at the Zhangjiagou locality. It has the following combination of characters: about 112 teeth in total (including the upper and lower jaws); the dentition occupies more than 50% of the skull length; the anterior teeth vary in size; the mandibular symphysis is longer than half of the whole mandible length; in ventral view, an apparent symphyseal trough in the median part of the symphysis.

A new fossil subfamily of Bethylidae (Hymenoptera) from the Early Cretaceous Lebanese amber and its phylogenetic position Rev. Bras. Zool.

A new subfamily, a new genus and a new species of Bethylidae are described and illustrated from a single individual in Early Cretaceous amber from central Lebanon. Lancepyrinae subfam. nov. represented by Lancepyris opertus gen. and sp. nov. present a mosaic of features common among several bethylid subfamilies. The new taxon is easily distinguished from related taxa mainly by the forewing venation, which has an unusual combination of closed lanceolate marginal cell, Rs+M tubular and well pigmented and M+RS angled. Phylogenetic analysis including indicates that Lancepyris opertus gen. and sp. nov. is a sister group of all subfamilies that have Coleoptera as hosts. A checklist of the 45 known fossil bethylid species is provided.

Comments on some new occurrences of heteromorph ammonites in the Lower Cretaceous (late Valanginian — early Barremian) of the Eastern Alpine and Western Carpathian systems Naturalis

New records of heteromorph ammonites from the Silesian Unit of the Outer Western Carpathians (Czech Republic) are represented especially by small pyrite steinkerns with suture lines preserved. A lesser proportion of them belongs to representatives of the subfamily Bochianitidae from the Valanginian. Among the most interesting is Baculina rouyana d’Orbigny. Another group consists primarily of lower Barremian Leptoceratoidinae. In addition to commonly occurring species of Hamulinites and Leptoceratoides, an Eoheteroceras assemblage is often found, represented partially by new elements. Description of Coloborhynchus spielbergi sp. nov. (Pterodactyloidea) from the Albian (Lower Cretaceous) of Brazil. Naturalis

A new species of pterosaur, Coloborhynchus spielbergi sp. nov. (Pterodactyloidea), from the Romualdo Member (Albian) of the Santana Formation is described. The type consists of the skull, mandible and many of the post-cranial bones. The specimen displays a high degree of co-ossification indicating that the animal was an adult and likely quite old when it died. The wingspan is reconstructed at nearly 6 m. Among the characteristic features are a large anteriorly positioned premaxillary sagittal crest and a smaller, also anteriorly positioned dentary sagittal crest, a flat anterior aspect of the skull from which two teeth project and a ventrally fused pelvis. Fossil woods (Coniferales) from the Baqueró Group (Aptian), Santa Cruz Province, Argentina Anais da ABC (AABC)

Two new conifer morphospecies represented by a secondary xylem are reported for the Lower Cretaceous Baqueró Group (Santa Cruz Province, Argentina). Agathoxylon sp. is characterized by poorly defined growth rings, predominantly uniseriate pitting in the radial wall of the tracheids, cross fields with 1-6 pits and uniseriate rays. These features are shared with the leafy branches described for the unit as Araucaria grandifolia Feruglio emend. Del Fueyo and Archangelsky. The second taxon, Brachyoxylon sp. cf. B. boureaui, possesses poorly defined growth rings, mixed wood with predominantly uniseriate radial pitting, cross fields with 8-26 pits and uniseriate rays. These taxa represent the first fossil woods described for Baqueroan strata.

Macrofloral remains from the Lower Cretaceous of the Leiva region (Colombia) Naturalis

Lower Cretaceous plant fossils are described systematically from marine deposits near Villa de Leiva (Boyaca region, Colombia). Specimens originating from the same localities kept at the Florida Museum of Natural History (Gainesville) were included in the systematic description. The plant fossils belong to the Pteridophyta, the Cycadophyta, the Coniferophyta, and to taxa of uncertain affinity which, following previous authors, are referred to the angiosperms. Two new species of Coniferophyta are described, viz. Cupressinocladus hoedemaekeri sp. nov. and Brachyphyllum winklerprinsii sp. nov. Also, Thuites sutamarchensis Huertas is transferred to the genus Cupressinocladus. Fossil plants, Lower Cretaceous, Leiva Region, Colombia.

On the pterosaur remains from the Río Belgrano formation (Barremian), Patagonian Andes of Argentina Anais da ABC (AABC)

Pterosaur remains from the Río Belgrano Formation, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, were found close to the Estancia Río Roble, along with several ammonoids that indicate a Barremian age for those strata. The specimens (MACN-SC 3617) consist of one ulna and one element tentatively identified as a portion of a wing metacarpal. The ulna shows morphological affinities with the Pteranodontoidea (sensu Kellner 1996), particularly with the members of the Anhangueridae by having a well developed ventral crest close to the proximal articulation, and is tentatively referred to this pterosaur clade. Reassessment and Relationships of †Scutatuspinosus itapagipensis (Teleostei, Clupeomorpha, †Ellimmichthyiformes) from the Neocomian of Recôncavo Basin, Northeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)

ABSTRACT Clupeomorphs are found in many assemblages of the northeastern Brazil, whose ages range from the Neocomian to Paleogene. Ten species were described. Among them †Scutatuspinosus itapagipensis, a torpedo-like fish found in shales of the Marfim Formation from Bahia, remains poorly known. At first it was positioned within †Scutatuspinosinae and indicated as closely related to †Diplomystus. Diagnoses for the subfamily and genus were based on certain characters masking relationships. Redescription of Tijubina pontei, an Early Cretaceous lizard (Reptilia; Squamata) from the Crato Formation of Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)

The record of Gondwanan Mesozoic lizards is very poor. Among the few species described for this region there is Tijubina pontei, an Early Cretaceous lizard from the Crato Formation (late Aptian) of northeast Brazil. Its description is very brief and lacks most of its diagnostic characters and clear delimitation from other lizard species. Here, a full redescription of the holotype is provided. T. pontei is demonstrated to be a valid species and a new diagnosis is provided with reference to Olindalacerta brasiliensis, a contemporary species of the Crato Formation. ABSTRACT †Codoichthys carnavalii is a clupeomorph fish only found in calcareous concretions of Codó Formation, State of Maranhão. It is known based on three specimens housed in the paleontological collection of the Museu de Ciências da Terra of Departamento Nacional da Produção Mineral, Rio de Janeiro. It was omitted in most of recent cladistic analyses about clupeomorphs. We revisited its anatomy furnishing new data and additional restorations. Report on the 4th International Workshop of the Lower Cretaceous Cephalopod Team (IGCP-Project 362) Naturalis

The Working Group proposes only one modification to its current zonation of the Mediterranean Region, the addition of a cristatum Subzone in the lower part of the inflatum Zone (upper Albian). But in the light of newly published research it highlights levels/areas where further work is required, especially to resolve conflicting zonal schemes. It also proposes a ‘Tethyan Province’ zonation for the middle Albian. Alternative correlations for the Boreal/Tethyan Valanginian to Barremian stages are tabulated, one based on ammonite evidence alone, the other with additional biostratigraphical data coupled with sequence stratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy.
