Cycle de l'azote à l' interface eau-sédiment dans le Bassin d'Arcachon : rôle des bactéries dans les processus de perte en azote (nitrification-dénitrification) 5
Riou, Stéphane Alain.
Bacterial nitrification and denitrification were studied in the sediments of the Bassin d'Arcachon, a macrotidallagoon located in the Southwestern Atlantic French coast colonized by extensive Zostera noltii  meadows. Nitrifiers were enumerated by MPN method. Densities were law : from 102 to 104 bacteria per ml of sediment presenting an increase during winter. Nitrifying activities were measured by NH4+  accumulation N-serve block technique. Activities were ranged from 0 to 90 µmol m-2 h-1 and nitrification represented 120-140 mmol m-2 yr-1 for intertidal sediments. The 15N  isotope pairing technique was applied to sediment samples from the whole bay for determining the denitrification rates. Average rates were 10-20 µmol m·2 h-1 with a maximum of 75 µmol...

Estimation of most probable number of Salmonella in minced pork samples 58
Borowsky,Luciane Martins; Schmidt,Verônica; Cardoso,Marisa.
The quantification of microorganisms present in food samples is an important step to assess the risk to consumers. The number of salmonellae in 20 positive samples of minced pork was determined by the Most Probable Number method. Counts ranging between <3 and 240 cfu.g-1 were found in the analyzed samples.

Evaluating most probable number method to count and isolate viable methylotrophs 58
Kashyap,S.
Nine different receptacles were tested with the MPN method to determine which receptacle was most reliable and economical for MPN counts. Results showed that 96 well PCR plate were the best vessels for this type of analysis and facilitated the isolation of viable Methylotrophs.

Peptidolytic microbial community of methanogenic reactors from two modified UASBs of brewery industries 58
Díaz,C.; Baena,S.; Patel,B.K.C.; Fardeau,M.L..
We studied the peptide-degrading anaerobic communities of methanogenic reactors from two mesophilic full-scale modified upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors treating brewery wastewater in Colombia. Most probable number (MPN) counts varied between 7.1 x 10(8) and 6.6 x 10(9) bacteria/g volatile suspended solids VSS (Methanogenic Reactor 1) and 7.2 x 10(6) and 6.4 x 10(7) bacteria/g (VSS) (Methanogenic Reactor 2). Metabolites detected in the highest positive MPN dilutions in both reactors were mostly acetate, propionate, isovalerate and, in some cases, negligible concentrations of butyrate. Using the highest positive dilutions of MPN counts, 50 dominant strains were isolated from both reactors, and 12 strains were selected for sequencing their 16S...

Quantitative evaluation of Listeria monocytogenes in fresh and processed surubim fish (Pseudoplatystoma sp) 58
Souza,V.M. de; Alves,V.F.; Destro,M.T.; De Martinis,E.C.P..
L. monocytogenes is a foodborne psychrotrophic bacterial pathogen of special importance for minimally processed foods. In this work, it was enumerated in samples of surubim fish by MPN technique. The population of L. monocytogenes was estimated as < 0.012 MPN/cm² in fresh and < 0.03 MPN/g in minimally processed fish.

Seasonal fluctuations of bacterial population and microbial activity in soils cultivated with eucalyptus and pinus 63
Rigobelo,Everlon Cid; Nahas,Ely.
The accumulation and decomposition of litter in soils under forests depend on climatic and biotic conditions. This work evaluated the effect of monthly rainfall and temperature on total bacteria, and on the dehydrogenase and respiration microbial activities. The effects of organic matter, total organic C and soil moisture were also evaluated. Performed from April, 1999 to March, 2000 in an Eucalyptus-cultivated and Pinus-cultivated Oxisol (Typic Haplustox), the study showed that climate and the soil variables affect the total number of bacteria and the microbial activities. The highest air temperatures and rainfall intensities were found during the Summer and, consequently, all the studied variables were maximal during this period. Minimal values varied...

การลดเชื้อ Campylobacter jejuni ในซากไก่ด้วยคลอรีนและโอโซน 106
Panrapee Iamtaeweejarloen; Pravate Tuitemwong; Jirawat Kantakrienwong; Kooranee Tuitemwong.
Objectives of this study were to investigate the process sensitivity to Campylobacter spp. and to assess the reduction efficiency of ozonation and chlorination in chilling step of the poultry process using data derived from mCCDA plating and SimPlate MPN methods. Samples of 80 were collected from 4 process steps in the processing plant (scalding, plucking, inside outside washing, and chilling). Numbers of Campylobacter spp. on mCCDA at the respective steps were 3.35, 3.20, 2.68 and 0.20 logCFU/ml, while the SimPlate MPN had 2.54, 2.48, 2.31 and 0.84 log CFU/ml, respectively. Chilling is the most sensitive process to reduce the number of bacteria on both media. Chlorination at 1.5 ppm reduced Campylobacter spp. by 97.46% and 58.62% on mCCDA and SimPlate...
