A Farm Gate-to-Consumer Value Chain Analysis of Kenya’s Maize Marketing System AgEcon
Kirimi, Lilian; Sitko, Nicholas J.; Jayne, Thomas S.; Karin, Francis; Muyanga, Milu; Sheahan, Megan; Flock, James; Bor, Gilbert.
Based on the findings of this study, the following actions are proposed for consideration by the Government of Kenya: 1. Raise public investment in maize seed breeding and agronomic research to make it possible for improvements in smallholder crop productivity. Based on research evaluating the returns to alternative investments in agriculture, public expenditures in maize seed breeding and agronomy may constitute the single most important investment to promote broad-based productivity growth and poverty reduction in Kenya. 2. Explore options for improving public and private extension programs to enable farmers to adopt improved farm technologies generated from point 1. 3. Examine options for bringing more land in Kenya under potential cultivation by...

A MAGYARORSZÁGI RÉGIÓK BÚZA- ÉS KUKORICATERMELÉSÉNEK FŐBB JELLEMZŐI AgEcon
Hingyi, Hajnalka.
A termésát-lagok szintén a dél-dunántúli régióban voltak a legmagasabbak a vizsgált idő-szakban. • A régiók termésátlagai – az egyes régiók eltérő...

Activation of phenylalanine ammonia lyase as a key component of the antioxidative system of salt-challenged maize leaves Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Gholizadeh,Ashraf; Kohnehrouz,B. Baghban.
Differential antioxidative activities were assessed in the leaves of two maize inbreds (A-180 and A-619) under salt stress and the subsequent recovery period. Total antioxidation test revealed that in both inbreds, this ability was sharply increased during stress period, but was slowly reverted back to the normal level during recovery. The enzymatic antioxidative analysis showed differential patterns in the activities of catalase, peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase in both maize inbreeds. Comparative analysis of the activity of phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), a key enzyme at the gateway of propanoid biosynthetic pathway, suggested that propanoid compounds might be antioxidants of pivotal importance to the salt-challenged maize antioxidation system. As...

ADOPTION OF MAIZE AND WHEAT TECHNOLOGIES IN EASTERN AFRICA: A SYNTHESIS OF THE FINDINGS OF 22 CASE STUDIES AgEcon
Doss, Cheryl R.; Mwangi, Wilfred; Verkuijl, Hugo; De Groote, Hugo.
This paper synthesizes the findings of 22 micro-level studies on technology adoption carried out by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) with national agricultural research systems in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from 1996-1999. The authors found that technology adoption is taking place across Eastern Africa but considerable scope remains to improve the productivity of smallholder agriculture in higher potential regions with high levels of adoption. Extension was the variable most highly correlated with technology adoption, and extension services continue to play an important role in disseminating information on new varieties and how to manage them. Despite the usefulness of the micro-study results, especially for priority...

Adoption of Maize Production Technologies in the Coastal Lowlands of Kenya AgEcon
Wekesa, E.; Mwangi, Wilfred; Verkuijl, Hugo; Danda, Milton Kengo; De Groote, Hugo.
Maize is the major food crop grown in the coastal region of Kenya and constitutes a major component of the diet of the population in the region. However, average yields are far below the potential for the region and low production levels create serious food deficits. Over the years, new technologies have been introduced but adoption has remained low, especially for fertilizer. This paper examined current maize-farming practices and technological and socioeconomic factors that influenced adoption in the Kilifi and Kwale Districts of the Coast Province, that together account for half of maize production in the region. The study found low adoption levels for improved maize varieties and technology, especially fertilizer, among farmers in the area. Farmers...

Agricultura de precisão: possibilidades de manejo da adubação nitrogenada para o milho no Cerrado. Infoteca-e

Agricultural crops in the diet of bearded capuchin monkeys, Cebus libidinosus Spix (Primates: Cebidae), in forest fragments in southeast Brazil Zoologia
Freitas,Carlos Henrique de; Setz,Eleonore Z. F.; Araújo,Alba R. B.; Gobbi,Nivar.
Capuchin monkeys occupy a wide range of habitats where they feed on fruits, arthropods, and vertebrates. Their large home ranges (80-900 ha) suggest that living in forest fragments may challenge their adaptability. We identified and quantified the main food items of Cebus libidinosus Spix, 1823 in forests fragments (100 ha) in southeastern Brazil. We recorded the feeding activities of two groups using scan sampling over a 13-month period. The diet was composed of fruits, crops, animal prey, seeds, plant matter and undetermined. Fruit was eaten more in the wet season than in the dry season, and maize and sugar cane consumption peaked in the early dry season. The proportion of fruit in the diet was positively correlated with fruiting intensity of zoochorous...

Agricultural Research Impact Assessment: The Case of Maize Technology Adoption in Southern Mali AgEcon
Boughton, Duncan; Frahan, Bruno Henry de.
Adoption of the improved maize package was particularly rapid during the period 1980-86 when an attractive guaranteed price was offered and extension activities were reinforced by a maize project that included the establishment of a seed multiplication program. Following cereal market price liberalization in 1986, maize prices fell and have been subject to considerable variability. Area has continued to expand, but farmers have greatly reduced fertilizer use, switched back to maize-late millet intercropping, and substituted early maturing varieties better suited to their own food security needs. The estimated internal rate of return (IRR) to investment in maize research and extension in southern Mali over the period 1969-90 is 135%. This high rate can be...

Agri-environmental evaluation of traditional and alternative corn production systems in Chiapas, Mexico JARTS
Aguilar-Jiménez, Carlos Ernesto; Tolón-Becerra, Alfredo; Lastra-Bravo, Xavier Bolívar.
This study evaluates the effects of environmental variables on traditional and alternative agroecosystems in three Ejidos (communal lands) in the Chiapas rainforest in Mexico. The tests occurred within two seasonal agricultural cycles. In spring-summer, experiments were performed with the traditional slash, fell and burn (S-F-B) system, no-burn systems and rotating systems with Mucuna deeringiana Bort., and in the autumn-winter agricultural cycle, three no-burn systems were compared to evaluate the effect of alternative sowing with corn (no-burn and topological modification of sowing). The results show a high floristic diversity in the study area (SS = 4 - 23%), with no significant differences among the systems evaluated. In the first cycle, the analysis...
