The fertilizing management for apple tree is essential, especially for nitrogen, one of the most important nutrients affecting fruit yield. Thus, an experiment was conducted in 2012 and 2013 to evaluate the fruit production, yield and leaf chlorophyll of ?Princesa? and ?Eva? apples as a function of nitrogen fertigation under Brazilian semiarid conditions. The experimental design consisted of randomised blocks, with treatments distributed in a factorial arrangement 2 x 4, corresponding to apple cultivars (Eva and Princesa); and nitrogen doses (160, 120, 80 and 40 kg of N ha-1), with four replications and three plants. Calcium nitrate was used as nitrogen source (15.5% of N) with applications twice a week during 40 days, reaching 12 fertilizing performances... |

The objective of this work was to evaluate the feasibility of using ammonium thiosulfate as a chemical blossom thinner in 'Maxi Gala' apple (Malus domestica) trees and its effects on fruit quality. The experiment was carried out in an experimental orchard in the Southern Brazil, in a randomized complete block design, with five replicates. Ammonium thiosulfate was sprayed on the apple trees at the full bloom stage, at 0, 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5%. Evaluations were performed for the effects on crop load, fruit set, yield efficiency, and fruit quality parameters such as weight, shape, total soluble solids, seed number, flesh firmness, color, and russeting occurrence. Ammonium thiosulfate at 2.5% is effective to reduce crop load and to improve fruit quality. The... |

Biennial bearing is the process in fruit trees by which one year of high fruit load is followed by a very low load or no production the next year. In apple growing, this is a troublesome problem, because of the negative effect on crop yield accumulated over the years, fruit quality, and plant physiology. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biennial bearing of nine apple cultivars, grafted on two rootstocks using of the biennial bearing index (BBI). The indices were calculated for the scion cultivars Maxi-Gala, Gala Real, Royal Gala, Fuji Select, Fuji Suprema, Mishima, Daiane, and Cripps Pink based on the yields from the harvests from 2008 to 2013. The apple cultivars exhibited no significant alternate production, considering the range of... |

The present study aimed to evaluate the accumulation and distribution of Cu and Zn fractions in the profile of an Inceptisol by application of fungicides with a previous history of apple cultivation in southern Brazil. Stratified soil samples (0.0 ? 0.025 m, 0.025 ?0.050 m, 0.05 ? 0.10 m, 0.10 ? 0.15 m, 0.15 ? 0.20 m and 0.20 ? 0.40 m depth) were collected in two apple orchards (8 years old and 18 years old), and in a native pasture area adjacent to the orchards. The soil was subjected to analysis of physical and chemical properties and to chemical fractionation of Cu and Zn. The fractions of soluble, exchangeable, organic, residual and total Cu and Zn accumulated in the topsoil (0.0 ? 0.025 m) of the orchards, being higher in the orchard cultivated for 18... |

The development and reproductive potential of Spodoptera eridania (Stoll, 1782) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) was compared on natural and artificial diets. Its biology was determined under laboratory conditions, providing an artificial diet, leaves of white clover and the peach cultivar "Chimarrita" and fruits and leaves of the apple cultivar "Gala". Larvae of S. eridania could not complete their biological cycle when fed on apple fruits or peach leaves. The artificial diet provided the shortest development time, with a cycle of 28.5±0.14 days from egg to adult and 37.3% total viability. Apple leaves led to a longer development time from egg to adult (62.8±1.22 days) and lower total viability (23%) and white clover provided the highest total viability (54.3%).... |

For Brazilian conditions there are still no studies on the use of the diagnosis and recommendation of the integrated system (DRIS) for nutritional diagnosis of the apple tree. The nutritional diagnosis of the apple tree is made using the criterion of sufficiency range. The aim of this report is to establish DRIS norms to interpret the results of apple tree leaf analysis in South Brazil. The study covered the apple producing areas of the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, in 70 orchards selected for their high productivity and employment of excellent management techniques. The concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, boron, copper, iron, manganese, and zinc were determined in leaf samples. DRIS indices were... |
