This presentation is a review of the chemistries of redox sensitive elements within suboxic regions of extreme oxygen minimum zones. Suboxic regions are defined as extreme oxygen minimum zones with dissolved oxygen < 10 µmol kg-1 (and likely <5 µmol kg-1), and with clear evidence of nitrate reduction, but not sulfate reduction. These are regions with nitrate deficits > 10 µmol kg-1 or N* values of _10 µmol kg-1. Suboxic regions predictably occur in the tropical and subtropical eastern Pacific and the Arabian Sea. These suboxic zones are important in the global biogeochemistry of nitrogen and act as an important sink for fixed nitrogen. Minor and trace element redox couples such as iodate/iodide and leachable particulate Mn/dissolved Mn undergo... |

In Brazil, plant-available micronutrients in the soil can be determined by several chemical extractants, the most common of which are dilute acid and chelating solutions. The purpose of this study was to assess the extractants 0.1 mol L-1 HCl, Mehlich-1, Mehlich-3 and DTPA for analysis of the micronutrients Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn in soils from the state of Paraná. In samples from 12 soils (0-20 cm layer), wheat was planted (Triticum aestivum), grown for 42 days after emergence, and then bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) for 38 days. At the end of each planting period, the soil was sampled again. All extractants tested to assess the availability of Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn correlated with each other. The efficiency of the extractants HCl, Mehlich-3 and DTPA in assessing... |

This work focuses on investigating the potential of calcein and manganese as growth markers of the common cockle (Cerastoderma edule) in the bay of Somme (France). Recapture of shells, previously marked using a chemical marking and then bred in natural conditions, was performed in order to determine the shell growth patterns. Calcein marking has shown a fluorescent increment in shells after only 30 min immersion time at 150 mg L-1, but also for shells immersed 3 h at 50 mg L-1. Likewise, manganese shell marking was revealed under cathodoluminescence for shells immersed 1 h at 120 mg L-1 as well as for shells which spent 4 h at 90 mg L-1. A numerical analysis performed on each marked cockles has revealed 23 micro-increments between the mark and the ventral... |

A number of trace metals play essential roles in marine ecosystem structure and biological productivity. Until recently, it has been argued that phytoplankton access primarily dissolved iron, while particulate iron was considered a refractory material with little use biologically and limited interaction with the dissolved pool. In order to assess the transfer mechanisms between sediment-sourced particulate trace metals and the dissolved pool, we conducted a 14-month incubation that reacted resuspended sediments with natural seawater, both originating from the Kerguelen area (KEOPS cruises; Southern Ocean), in the dark, and at concentrations replicating natural conditions. Three types of sediments were investigated (named BioSi, BioSi + Ca, and Basalt),... |

The effect of liming on the availability of micronutrients to soybean cultivated during different numbers of years under no tillage (NT) was investigated. The treatments consisted of the number of years under NT (three, six, and nine years) and five rates of lime (0, 33, 67 and 100% of the amount calculated to raise soil base saturation to 70%) broadcast on soil surface plus the rate of 100% broadcast with incorporation in the 0-0.20 m layer of a clayey Red Oxisol. Soil and leaf samples were collected at two vegetative stages of the crop (vegetative V4 and blossoming R2). The soil was sampled at depths of 0-0.05, 0.05-0.10, 0.10-0.20, and 0.20-0.30 m. Surface liming had little effect on extractable soil micronutrient and nutrient concentrations in soybean... |

The study of environmental pathways and human exposure to Manganese (Mn) in Southern Brazil was performed using two steps. The first step consisted of taking water samples from the surface of the Pardinho River. The average results from this technique showed a significant increase of pollutants, including increased levels of Mn, above the environmentally acceptable standard recommended by the Brazilian National Environment Council. Additionally, 64 soil samples were taken from areas with and without agricultural activity. Many results were above the mean crust and did not indicate significant differences of Mn levels between the sampled areas. For the second step, 12 families were selected and assessed for exposure to Mn in a region with high levels of Mn... |

Biomonitoring, assumed to be an integrative measurement of the chemical exposure of aquatic organisms, is not straightforward for essential metals because they can be actively regulated by animals. Although increasing bioaccumulation with exposure levels is a crucial endpoint for the development of biomonitors, it is rarely verified in real environments, where the metal concentrations are rather low and vary little. This study was designed at the scale of a river basin to assess the ability of Gammarus pulex indigenous populations to accumulate Cu, Zn and Mn in realistic exposure conditions. During two annual campaigns, water and gammarids were collected at various sites contrasted in terms of physicochemistry and contamination. The results show... |

The distribution of extractable manganese, which is likely to be similar to dissolved manganese, in a transect from the mid-shelf of the southeastern East China Sea Shelf across the Kuroshio to the Okinawa Trough was determined in May 1991. In the surface layer above 200 m, the higher concentrations of extractable manganese (5 to 6 nM) are found at the most shoreward station. Mixing between the shelf water and the Kuroshio results in a tongue of manganese-rich water (> 3 nM) extending from the shelf into the Okinawa Trough. In contrast, the Kuroshio surface water and the upwelling Kuroshio subsurface water, both with concentrations of < 3 nM, are manganese-poor. Thus, during upwelling and frontal exchanges, manganese-poor water is imported into the... |

Abstract Coffee is one of the most valuable agricultural commodities and the plants’ leaves are the primary site of infection for most coffee diseases, such as the devastating coffee leaf rust. Therefore, the use of bacterial microbiota that inhabits coffee leaves to fight infections could be an alternative agricultural method to protect against coffee diseases. Here, we report the leaf-associated bacteria in three coffee genotypes over the course of a year, with the aim to determine the diversity of bacterial microbiota. The results indicate a prevalence of Enterobacteriales in Coffea canephora, Pseudomonadales in C. arabica ‘Obatã’, and an intriguing lack of bacterial dominance in C. arabica ‘Catuaí’. Using PERMANOVA analyses, we assessed the association... |

Manganese is an essential element for plants, intervening in several metabolic processes, mainly in photosynthesis and as an enzyme antioxidant-cofactor. Nevertheless, an excess of this micronutrient is toxic for plants. Mn phytotoxicity is manifested in a reduction of biomass and photosynthesis, and biochemical disorders such as oxidative stress. Some studies on Mn toxicity and Mn translocation from soil to plant cells in Mn2+ form have demonstrated their importance under low pH and redox potential conditions in the soil. When Mn is inside the cells, mechanisms that can tolerate this toxicity are also observed, being important the compartmentalization of this metal in different organdíes of shoot and leaf plant cells. A key role of antioxidative systems... |

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of aluminum (Al) on the zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe) and copper (Cu) concentrations in four potato clones (Macaca and Dakota Rose: both Al-sensitive clones; and SMIC148-A and Solanum microdontum: both Al-tolerant-clones), grown in a nutrient solution (pH 4.00) with 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200mg Al L-1. Root Zn and Fe concentrations decreased linearly with the increase of Al levels in Macaca, SMIC148-A and Dakota Rose and increased linearly in S. microdontum. Shoot Zn concentration showed a quadratic relationship with Al in S. microdontum and SMIC148-A, but a curvilinear response in Dakota Rose. Shoot Fe concentration showed a quadratic relationship with Al in S. microdontum, SMIC148-A and Dakota... |

For confined animals, performance is improved when their diet is supplemented with a mineral mixture and protein energy. This study evaluated the effect of dietary supplementation on feedlot sheep on native pasture. Two experiments were conducted in sequence, with the animals constrained in one and animals confined to pasture in the other. The experiments were conducted with 32 Santa Ines lambs, with average initial weights of 16.8 and 19.9 kg for the constrained and pasture studies, respectively. In both experiments, the animals were offered the following supplements: Supplement 1 = 200 g of the concentrate without mineral mixture; Supplement 2 = 200 g of the concentrate with mineral mixture + Mn + Zn; Supplement 3 = 300 g of the concentrate with mineral... |
